Asian isn't only Japan, of course, but in the industry of the speculative fiction ( = fantasy + sci-fi) Japan is the main market. South Korea is also a big fish. We have to make a difference between Chinese people and Chinese government. Maybe a 3rd party could sell an Oriental Adventures setting in Taiwan without troubles, and even may become very popular, but in the Continent would be...

Time dragons, in the last number of paper Dragon Magazine, or the chronotyryns, from 3x. Ed of Fiend Folio. In Pathfinder you could find the hound of Tindalos. Also you could search something in the wiki of the Doctor Who, or reading the tv trope about "clockroaches" https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ClockRoaches

We are talking about the industry of speculative fiction by non-English-speaker countries, aren't we? If there is a new D&D Oriental Adventures for Asian players, the "kemonomimi" (animal-ears) as should be a PC race, or do you think hengeyokai are enough?. The RPGs are little sector of the entertainment industry if we compare it with the videogames, and most of them are made by Americans...

There are some differences between the glossary of Spain and Hispanoamerican, but not too much. Here in Spain we can see Hispanoamerican telenovels, "los culebrones" (the big snakes, the nickname for the soap operas, because they are very long, with many episodes). A Taiwanese company could publish its own third party setting for D&D, and Japan and Korea, but continental China is different....

Spanish isn't harder than other Latin languages, but with the subjunctive verbs. I dare to say it because I have tried to learn someones with the web Duolingo. German has a harder grammar, and Russia is worse because also its alphabet is different. Using always undead as antagonist is boring. I suggest a stone-paper-scissors-(lizard-Spock) confrontation between sentient constructs, lord feys, undeads and abominations from the far realm. Constructs destroy undeads, undead eat feys, werebeats, undeads and abominations eat each other, feys and abominations defeat constructs...

Do you remember the prestige class "fleshwarper" from 3.5 "Lords of Madness: book of aberrations"? - Bellonarii: warpriests who worship Bellona, goddess of war, as rival or Minerva and...

There are millions of Spanish-speakers, but we aren't enough rich to buy all. You can see in many free-to-play online videogames there are translations to different languages but not for Spanish. China is a great market, but there the future of the industry of the speculative fiction isn't good. Halflings and gnomes weren't created as PC race to play with all the classes, but they are more specialised in stealth classes, or in the case of the gnomes, illusory magic. I see gnomes like the mixture of feys and dwarfs, not like fantasy Jews. I am Spanish, and in the first Christian century Jewish community was the 10% of the population of the Roman empire. This means if I have got...

I like gnomes because they are the little ugly duckling, unpopular among most of players. In the right hands they can be characters so cool like Tyrion Lannister. About metagame their racial traits are to used like illusionist spellcasters or stealth classes like rogue. I guess the solution may be the racial traits to be replaced by an optional list of racial feats, like in Pathfinder 2. ...

In a fictional world you are allowed to do some horrible actions, but when it set in our real world then the things change. For example in Game of Thrones you can destroy a cathedral with Valyrian fire but don't dare to publish a novel or script for TV where a group of black-metal fans start a fire in a temple. Let's imagine a fan-fiction set in Vampire: the Masquerade where the anti-Spanish...

The master-slave morality is good for antagonist characters in the fiction, but it is too dangerous for main characters, or PCs in a RPG. Playing bad guys may be fun, but we should take care. Fiction or reality we can't forget we have to defend the respect of the human dignity. The saga of "song of ice and fire", Game of Thrones, is a good example of innocent people suffering because noble houses...

There are enough monsters and magic item. I am not interested about subclasses. I like PC races, racial/monster/template + racial paragon classes. If I buy books, not only PDFs, I would rather in my language. I want more classes, but theses can't be only a list of superpowers, but each one has to be an interesting concept, and with a fun gameplay.

Sometimes I wonder about why genis give wishes...and I have got some theories. - They are magic slaves by a punishment, like in the teleserie "upon once time". - In the old past they were enslaved by the mankin (or our ancestors, the titans). We don't remember them, but they do it. - The magic lamp is to collect mana. The genies get that mana and the wishes are the reward. - Fun....

I am against the limit for the number of classes. You can't say "we have enough classes", because it is like saying "your favorite toy franchise has enough characters" or "your doll has enough clothings and you haven't to buy a new dress". If WotC doesn't create new classes, then it will be by 3rd party companies, for example the warlord. I say it again, the keys to create new classes are: ...

For example comedies as "Bewitched", "Genie in a bottle" or "Sabrina the teen witch", but also "monster of the week(/season)" like "Charmed", "Buffy vampire slayer", "Grimm", "Supernatural", "True Blood". In the beginning the fighter is stronger than wizard, but later in the highest levels the spellcaster is very much more powerful. * You can't say "we have got enough classes". @LuisCarlos17f in D&D you can play drow and play them following Lolth or you can play them having abandoned those darker teachings. In 2e there was an adventure (I forget its name) but you played the humanoids defending your home against the evil adventurers/ heroes who were invading your home, slaying your kin and taking your treasures. In the BECMI series there was the Gazetteer Orcs of Thar which provided a table of XP for pillaging, slaying and capturing slaves. Hell, one of the stories I'd like to run is where the main PCs are illithids protecting the elder brain from a violent uprising of of ex-thralls helped on by the Githyanki. In Vampire, you have the opportunity of playing kindred with outrageous views, opposing mortals and the supernatural alike not only in combat, but in politics, religion and more - nevermind the inner struggle with the beast within and the effects of immortality on such mind. To have this desire to continuously apply real life ideology to a game seems a little too rig...

LuisCarlos17f That seems reasonable under a nine alignment system. Good, Evil and Nature are the three most important factions in D&D-world, with a possible Cthulhu/Tharizdun/Far Realm as a fourth. Under the three alignment system I'd place Nature as neutral. This is a different approach to Tolkien, where nature is very clearly good and the forces of evil, represented by orcs and Saruman, are strongly anti-nature.

Not sure if they致e cooled on that idea or not, but the projected timeline was years out. * Other option is cartoon about a mash-up of old Hasbro franchises but in a D&D version, in a world with enough arcanepunk technology to create skyships and other vehicles.

I am Spanish and we can add S for the plural of drow. And we don't need good drows if there are just darkskin people in the group of good guys. I would have to differ - if you are writing in English, then rules of English grammar apply. If you whole comment had been written in Spanish, rather than just one word, then "drows" would have been correct. I'm pretty sure if you wrote "sheeps" in an English test it would be marked wrong.
  • 03:29 AM - Sword of Spirit quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Spring's D&D Release Will Be Ship-Themed
If there is a return of Kara-tur we should see again old classes as the martial adepts (3.5 Tome of Battle: Book of nine Swords), the ninja, the samurai or the sohei. Al-Qadim? Maybe after the comingsoon action-live version of Disney's Aladdin. But we already have a subclass literally named "Samurai", and the Way of Shadow Monk subclass explicitly says it represents "ninjas". Making alternate versions would just be confusing and annoying. I'd hope to see something Faerun-based. After all these years, there are still VAST uncharted areas on the map. What map are you looking at? My read on it was that they had waited for feedback to see if they wanted to move forward with another full setting book, and now that they know they want to do it Stewart is hesitant to commit to a 2019 release. But, you might be right or he might have been imprecise (which is the danger of off-the-cuff hedge-y spoilers). If their next planned setting book is Eberron, making sure everything is ...

But, even without that, while I loved the 5th ed VtM core book, no way Modip & Co is getting any more $$$ from me for VtM given how things were handled. • 06:28 PM - Zardnaar quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Why 5E may be the last edition of D&D
We don't need a Drizzt clone for a good drow character. This can be a Eilistrae's follower. And we can add albine drows in the evil faction. Other option is some dark-skin humans among the hero group fighting against the slave-trader drows. Maybe some years after Drizzt there is a religious schism in the drow society, because drows start to notice the difference between a true leader and a toxic boss, and loyalty has to be for somebody who respect the dignity of subordinates. In the hands of the right writters the drows could be used for a fantasy version of peplum(sword-and-sandals) movies where the atrocious paganism is being replaced by a humanist new religion. And some communities evil cults are forfidden now, but really the majority doesn't notice they are still being manipulated by secret lodges of evil deities' clerics. creating a feeling of paranoia. Or maybe drows rebell against Lolth's new plans about a next step in the evolution of the race, ruled by a mind-controller parasite arachnid. ...

What if enemies can summon allies to make you to spend your ammunition? Or smoking grenades, or lot of illusions by magic. We aren't talking about gunslinger PCs vs boxer enemies, but sometimes the PCs are the boxers and the enemies the gunslingers or snipers. What if a spellcaster could create a magic zone where all bullets are teletransported to ther zone and then she become bulletproof. Let's imagine a homebred spell what doesn't allow gundpower to burn and then the firearms in that zone become useless. Which level should be that spell? What is the PCs are in a tribe of noble savages, like the na'vis from Avatar, and their primitive society is attacked by an alien invasion of goblings riding steampunk mechas? Or we can give a story about the heroes helpe good drows who are being persecuted in the evil empire rule by the evil drow deities. Then the good drows are an minority suffering intolerance and persecution. Given that they are a player race in the game, and what ground has been laid in sundry adventure books, very doable. I wouldn't recommend going full Drow as a start, though: still problematic.

Have you thought about the idea or exosuits used by gnomes a goblins? There's some thought to armours that are bulletproof or not, though generally all classes lose Heavy Armour Proficiency. Since 19 century Cuirassiers still wore Breastplate, Medium Armour is still a thing and still uses it's AC bonus against bullets. Heavy Armour Proficiency has to be gained by picking certain subclasses or a feat, they give access to Mechanical Power Armour which is probably AC 18. I feel should have maybe as much as 3 special traits. Like increased land speed, jump jets, the ability to use 1 size larger melee weapons, built in shotguns, darkvision, fire resistance, or those types of things.

If steampunk is possible, why not biopunk? I have biopunk in mind for things at the fringes of the setting. There's certainly Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and HG Wells Island of Dr. Moreau as touchstones. The core of the setting would be like our world in the 19th century where there's nations sort of like a Victorian England, a Wild West, a Qing Dynasty China that never went into decline, an India equivalent with fleets of Vinama air fortresses, a France that never left the revolution behind and so on, thrown in the blender with Elves, Orcs and other fantasy elements and D&Disms. The Far Realm certainly does have it's influence on the world. Illithids lurk, and there's the Kaorti and they use things such as Kroath shock troopers and N'sss war machines, taking the alien types from Alternity's Star*Drive setting and D20 Future.

If my memory doesn't fail, there is in the SRD something for steampunk setting published by 3rd parties. My opinion is if the firearms are too powerful in a game with d20 System then too many players don't want hand-to-hand fighter like paladins or barbarians. And they can break the balance of power. A simple level 1 goblin with a sniper rifle from the top of a tree, or riding a flying monster, could be a true nightmare for a monk PC without distance attacks. How should be the XP reward? Other matter is about creation of low level powers against gunslingers, for example a bulleproof magic shield, or creating a little piece of ectoplasm to block enemy canons. It's going to be assumed the campaign from the start is balanced towards everyone having a firearm in some ways. Fighters are assumed to have rifles and likely ones with bayonets, Barbarians will likely use shotguns or combination melee-firearms, Monks carry pistols as backup, Paladins are sort of the types in fancy military dress uni...

Other option is trying with a sci-fi lincence like Gamma World, Star*Drive or Star Frontiers. And we can't forget a cartoon for TV. The reboot of My Little Pony is a total succes. Why not a spin-off like "Equestria Girls" but with centaurides/centauresses(female centaurs) in a softer version of a sword & sorcery world? Aherm, I (would) wouldn't watch that. I'm too old for My Little Pony (lying scoundrel).

    * I guess the key is a good story. Hire G.R.R.Martin for a story in the world of Birthright with a gnome crossbower and it is a blockbuster. Do NOT further distract the man from finishing the next GoT novel! Maybe we need something like a playtesting, with an animated movie until finding the right formule. That's an expensive playtest....

Edgar Rice Burrogh died in 1950 and this means his characters will be public domain in 2025 and then we will can find it in other RPGs systems, at least some homebred version. Maybe in some Paizo's bestiary or alien compendium for Pathfinder, Starfinder or Aetherfinder (steampunk-raypunk). "Aetherfinder" when did Paizo announce that one? I am very interested to hear more. Sounds superb.

  • 07:34 PM - Parmandur quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Unearthed Arcana: Sidekicks
The sidesicks have to be simple for a faster game if there are used many nPCs. If there is a module about sidesick humanoids, why not about animals and monster allies? Today new generations are used to videogames about collecting, and training/taming monsters, for example Pokemon and Digimon. And some players would like exotic allies like sentient constructs or planar outsiders. Actually, these rules work for animals and monsters of no more than CR 1, as long as friendship exists and the DM allows. So, Half-Ogres, a few Metallic Dragon Wyrmlings and some straight up weird possibilities work here.
