There are tons of sources online for various NPC personalities, but I still can't find anything that seems a good fit. My players are just getting ready to refurbish Trollskull Manor and they want to hire a night guard. I'd like to have a couple of personalities ready for them to interview and chose from, BUT, I can't find anyone from the above sources... So, anyone have any sources that...

IMO, Mr. Howard, the author, was sitting around the house watching his kids and he was bored. Maybe he had a deadline and had to come up with something, anything, to get to his editor. Besides being poorly done, it still reaches it's objective, which is to bring a bunch of clicks to the page so that the site can claim all sorts of click for ad revenue.

TonyVargas ...approaches out?Closest to this, I suppose. I really lift from the fiction of Tanith Lee & Michael Moorcock, when it comes to the relationship of the mortal to the divine. Gods gain power, perhaps even derive existence, from their worshippers..... Thanks always want to when the idea that worshippers are batteries came from. I am not a follower of that idea.

I hate the instant death plane too. Plane of Fire would be similar to the prime but with lots fire reskin of monsters. Think of Disneyland with a fire theme in some planes. And other a nice hotel for the travelers which is safe from the fire critters.

Agreed, and I believe that it is supported both with historical fact and role playing reasons that no point in going for the hull. Do you want there to be a mechanical reason for attacking the hull? Think of the size of most of the components on a ship, they are roughly the same size or larger than a character or monster. So if a commoner is AC 10 to damage standing on the deck of a ship,...

Because you seem to be wandering all over :) (edit: which is ok) Statistics are their to enable game play. they are typically well thought out, but if you don't like them, you are always free to change them. Oh, and another reason I think small/short adventures will be better, if life happens and you don't finish, that's going to leave a poor experience. Like getting half-way through a game of Monopoly your first time (now why did we do this?). Multiple quests that he 'wins' at each time will leave him with 2, 3, or 4 'games' under his belt.

How much time do you have? I get you are going to be there for a few days, but are you going to have 12 hours or so? Because that's what I would expect with what you have laid out. Plus given how others might join you, I think of bunch of 1-2 hour one-shots that are roughly related would be a better start. Would allow for you to change and adapt as people want to join. Would allow for him to...

Why would you think anyone would attack the hull? Every RPG I play it with sailing vessels, we start by burning the sails of the other ship. That lets us either run away or close at our discretion. Then you pick off any artillery they have. Then close if you want. Ships are valuable if you can sail it back to port, and if not they carry valuable cargo you can loot. My understanding is...

I'd lean towards background over sub-class. But, regardless, some mechanics (assuming 5E); - advantage on fear saves (i.e. a grave robber has to be pretty resistant to fear) - proficient skills; investigation, religion, stealth, perception (pick 2?) (Don't see a need for athletics for digging, come on, how good do you need to be with a shovel?)

IMO, organized play suffers from one major flaw; the need to accommodate "competitive optimizers". What I mean by this is gamers who feel the need to have the best character at the table, to reach some sort of 'endgame' where they/their character is the best/most powerful/optimized/awesome character possible. Because of this, their have to be rules and standards for everything that impacts...

Define what you mean by "Rabbi" You obviously have something in mind (perhaps based on real-world beliefs). And, similar to what Cap'n Kobold said, I don't see how a rabbi (in my expectation) would be any different than a straight cleric of a monotheistic god. Which causes problems in most settings, so, again, what do you mean by Rabbi?

I think the AL will not allow exploring randomly out into woods. Um swamps. Etc. So far except for the Special cover none of the art work really stands out. Now to grab some bubble wrap and cardboard and make boxes for each of ships.

I play a few games at con. YES DM quality range from oh my gawd, to can I take you home. I have DM at cons, organized D&D at Cons and run some epics. I had some great DMs, and others I have hinted they not welcomed to DM if I in charge. Mainly due not knowing the rules, or not having a loud enough voice to be heard at the table. Epics are kind of silly with their time stop BS but that is buy in....

Lots get said on the FG forum, just like this one, that is not accurate or can be taken out of context or misunderstood. So regardless of what you may have read elsewhere, what I said is accurate. You are wrong. You never need to be online to start the program or access your content. You do need to be online in 2 cases only; 1) when players are joining you from remote locations (i.e. using the internet), 2) if you have players local to your network that are connecting to your game and you use an Ultimate license and the player does not have a license. Not if it does exactly what you want at a price you are ok with. Who cares what it is called? Now, if (as you state) you don't want to pay the price, that's fine. But folks should not continue to claim no such tool exists just because its called something different and costs more than they are willing to pay.

  • 01:21 AM - pukunui mentioned LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
LordEntrails: Using software to automate the process would certainly make alternative initiative methods more appealing. Unfortunately for me, I don't use any software when I run my games, so we'd be stuck with stopping the combat at the end of each round, having everyone reroll, having me shuffle the initiative tents I hang on my DM screen around to reflect the new order, then commencing with the next round of combat.

  • 12:52 PM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! I believe that is why LordEntrails suggested the dungeons be clear when the PCs get there. Leave signs they have fled or retreated and that they know the PCs are coming for them. Make it clear the cult is break up based on the success of the PCs. They should make them fell good and move the story along to where the cultist are making the final stand. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal... "Could be lethal" are the most exciting challenges to overcome and the ones the players might talked about for years later.
  • 01:56 AM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good against Imix. Ok, with 5 PCs I think you should probably be just fine against Imix (he is only CR 19) if the group is prepared. Ogremoch might be a bit tougher. However, you know your group the best. I would take @LordEntrails suggestion and then don't change anything with the Princes themselves.

  • 09:02 PM - Satyrn mentioned LordEntrails in post Miles per day on horseback: how many?
A less severe alternative might be that the horse could not be ridden for the rest of this day and the next. Presumably, speed is currently of value to the party, so that would still be a meaningful penalty. That's definitely more reasonable than what I'd do. I just don't like horses. Though that was before reading LordEntrails' post. Now I love horses.

  • 08:26 AM - Enevhar Aldarion mentioned LordEntrails in post Anyone else find this really irritating?
LordEntrails Elfcrusher I sort of lost track in this thread who was arguing which side of this, but basically it is legal for the owner of the product to make a backup or an alternate format of the product. That means you, personally, have to make it for it to be legal. As soon as anyone does this and then shares it with other people, even for free, then copyright laws, etc are being violated. You also need to keep ownership of the original for your copies to stay legal. For example, you can't just buy a DVD or CD or something, make a copy of it, and then sell or give away the original without making your copy illegal to own, in the US at least.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

  • 03:09 PM - canucksaram mentioned LordEntrails in post More details
@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

  • 11:00 AM - transtemporal mentioned LordEntrails in post Boss Fight Help
What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

I mean, yeah, but he could have done so much better. "Hey guys, did you hear the news? They are gearing up for a complete revamp- they are leaning hard into a new, improved AEDU system and a rebranding .... Are you ready for W&W? You know, Warlocks and Warlords?" Some people ... just want to watch the world burn.

  • 10:16 AM - Riley37 quoted LordEntrails in post RPGA, Pathfinder Society and Adventurer's League - why are they all so terrible?
IMO, organized play suffers from one major flaw; the need to accommodate "competitive optimizers". What I mean by this is gamers who feel the need to have the best character at the table, to reach some sort of 'endgame' where they/their character is the best/most powerful/optimized/awesome character possible. I am not convinced that organized play NEEDS to accommodate those players. IMO, organized play *could* stop accommodating that style of play, and take active measures to discourage that kind of player from participating. This would require some clear intention, communicating that intention across the organization, and some brave willingness to ruthlessly enforce behavioral boundaries. I think it's *possible*. As for volunteer quality: I have known organizations with a high bar for volunteer quality. For some tasks, it's better to recruit and retain a dozen volunteers of reliably high skill and commitment, than to recruit hundreds and retain them all regardless of quality. Sometimes...

IMO, organized play suffers from one major flaw; the need to accommodate "competitive optimizers". Sounds more like trying to avoid acomodating them. In a home game, the DM can readily recognize and curb such behavior. But, in AL, the rulings not rules philosophy is slightly subverted - AL rulings become the DMs rules, and some of the tools he had thus vanish. I suspect that also discourages some quality DMs from participating, and causes others to run less-awesome games than they might otherwise.

You are wrong. You never need to be online to start the program or access your content. You do need to be online in 2 cases only; 1) when players are joining you from remote locations (i.e. using the internet), 2) if you have players local to your network that are connecting to your game and you use an Ultimate license and the player does not have a license. But neither are those cases relevant to use case you outlined because those are VTT capabilities, not an offline character and campaign builder that you said you wanted. Valid reason. And why it was one of the reasons I explicitly said was understandable. Not sure your price estimate is right, but FG is does cost more than "free" to do what you want. Ok, if it is to you, fine. But given their are numerous offline map builders available (many free), I have no idea why a single tool that does both is so important to you, but if that's your requirement you'll have to wait for FGU (~December 2019) to have everything in one package. ...

Exactly what should have been done, and nothing else should really be expected. No point in the community blowing up over this. I think we can talk about things which are important to us.

Yep, some do. And the best thing to do is to handle it quickly, openly, and relatively quietly. Why 'relatively quietly' (which is somewhat of a contradiction to 'openly')? Nothing is served by shutting up and agreeing never to speak of it again. For one thing, the convention's quick and decisive response is a good model for other groups to follow. For another, it's great PR for gaming to be a more welcoming place that it's historically been.

You two do know this exists for 5E right? I mean you are both regulars here you got to know right? Is it just that the product isn't the U/I you want or at the price you want so you ignore it right? Fantasy Grounds. sure, it's designed as a VTT, but it does everything you say you want. - Offline: yep, it is. - Creates and Updates PCs; yep, does that with drag and drop or direct text entry. Agreed it's not billed as a character manager, because you can't easily remove levels, but PC's only take minutes to create and update. - Creates Encounters; yep, does that. Calculates the CR and XP and links to all the NPC entries (plus places them on maps and into the Combat Tracker if you want that). - Digital copies of the Core Books; Yep, they are in a proprietary format so you have to read them in FG, but it's much like any e-pub with inline images, searching, etc. And you do have to buy the books you want or make them yourself. - Basic Map Making with Hyperlinks; OK, so the native map making suck...

Not if it does exactly what you want at a price you are ok with. Who cares what it is called? Now, if (as you state) you don't want to pay the price, that's fine. But folks should not continue to claim no such tool exists just because its called something different and costs more than they are willing to pay. If you can me a sample PDF of the characters it generates, I’ll see if it fits my desires well enough to try a demo.

No idea. Not familiar with the term. But, if you dismiss a person based on one idea of theirs then you are probably going to have to dismiss; Aristotle, Descartes, Thomas Aquinas, Confucius, Sun Tzu, Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, Monte Cook, etcHaving looked it up, it would have been quite an argument starter during the 4E era, but in reality it's a nitpicking philosophical viewpoint. Short version: "dissociative mechanics are all game mechanics that are cause by player decision, not character decision," such as the Lucky feat in 5E. He then goes to talk about why they're "not roleplaying," since it's only roleplaying when you have the character make decisions. While I think you are generally correct that dismissing someone based on one idea isn't great, it does give you a good idea into the general mindset the person has about a similar topic. A good example of this for me Jeremy Crawford (head 5E rules guy); I have found from his ideas that he and I fundamentally disagree on how 5E should be playe...

Justin Alexander's The Alexandrian. The guy that coined "dissociative mechanics?" Hard pass. Once the introductory arc wraps up, my players will have free rein to go whatever direction they want, and if they choose to explore the Kingdom Underhill they will find it mired in civil unrest. I'm hoping to get some advice on how to run this sort of adventure Players are more likely to engage with and care about this sort of situation if they have connections to the various factions. That means developing NPCs the players care about, which can be an up-hill climb. It also REALLY depends on the players and their attitudes, especially if they see an analogy to some RL controversies they have opinions about. So, it's likely to be ignored (oh, that kinda sucks, have we heard any rumors about treasure?) Or a source tension (politics are off limits, here, so no example). It's different if you telegraph that one faction is in the right and portray another as jerks, then it still might be a long...

And apparently you just ignored James post that stated it was a TSR Legal group decision to remove the content without further input from him? I read the post in detail. The larger point was that the "TSR Legal" group decision was, as far as I can tell, a mistake based on insufficient research.

You can still do that in any system, just make the saves or damage high enough that anything you want becomes just a lethal. Use the slow healing and other options in the DMG and you can do the same thing. Want Rot Grubs in 5E (or any other system)? Then just create them (I did, but not as lethal as 2E). . Well, it's more than just increasing damage and using slow healing in the DMG. You'd have to eliminate non magical healing completely Then cut all the PC's HP by about half. And get rid of the skill system. And change how spells work. Really, there is lot more to do than just increase damage. If you're going back old-school, go 1e. 1e, also known as "The Katana of D&D" is the only appropriate past edition to play.* AD&D. Accept no substitutes. *Okay, the Committee also accepts B/X (Moldvay/Cook) as an answer. 1e with 2e's THAC0, thief skill progression, and the bard class (for those sick enough to want to play a bard). I compromise ;)

A lot of those reasons were exactly what we didn't like about 2E. DM narrated death with no chance of the players doing anything meaningful to cause it or prevent it. Or perhaps a single save or die roll. You can still do that in any system, just make the saves or damage high enough that anything you want becomes just a lethal. Use the slow healing and other options in the DMG and you can do the same thing. Want Rot Grubs in 5E (or any other system)? Then just create them (I did, but not as lethal as 2E). But, if 2E is the only thing that you want, then play it as is. No need to justify it. No. You should have to justify it, in much the same way a person has to justify a love for gnomes. "What, like, a garden gnome? Wait ... you want to PLAY a gnome? Why would you ever do that?" 2e is the rapier of editions. I mean, sure, I suppose there are people out there, justifying it, telling themselves, "Self, you know what would be awesome? Smiting with a rapier!" Don't be that person. If you're go...

Well, I will say that over on Fantasy Grounds their is actually a growing 2E community. I'm sure it's growth is limited, but since they introduced an official 2E AD&D ruleset and the core books to go with it a couple months ago, their is a bit of a revival over there. No idea how long it will last or how big it will grow, but if you want to play 2E, you can do it anywhere in the world.I thought that was pretty cool that they decided to support 2e on fantasy grounds.
