We played the rules as written (EDIT: or at least as we understood them), and didn't worry about it or try to justify loop-holes. So, no metal armor, no edged weapons, no flaming oil.

I'm with other, don't weaken Str by making all your stuff Dex based. Keep separate Parkour 'tasks' related to their appropriate skill. (Many/majority will be Dex, but some are Str.) For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

So now the rest of the party has to get a mop and bucket. Now there a good reason to sneak into the dungeon to rescue the rest of the party. Knock Knock Thief. You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

Says you. Funny how re-roll initiative is one of the optional rules listed int he DMG. Sure, combat is chaotic. No, no it does not mess up anything except your assumptions and expectations. It doesn't break anything in the rules themselves. Umm, really? You are worried about something that might have a 1% impact over a statistically large sample? Besides, don't people usually...

Yes, at a table with pencil and paper. With digital tools, specifically FG, it is easy to turn on re-rolls and not worry about it. Re-roll init also has other benefits too. Esp. along the lines of limiting metagaming and enhancing the chaos of combat.

I'll have to read some setting materials to see if I'm comfortable with the races and magic in SR. I also have to say the C-Punk 2077 that is coming out next year might be well timed for me.

*shrugs* maybe. I've known/know "genius intellects" (as defined by Mensa). Doesn't mean they have much common sense or can extrapolate. Some have intellects that are very narrow and I can easily see that a 1st level wizard with a genius intellect would have no practical idea of how that would effect his spells if cast underwater. Lots of variables, just another situation for a DM to make a ruling...

I should have expanded upon my thoughts. Changes to the way spells work is fine (and can add to the fun). But, they need to be communicated IRL to the player in a timely manner (not necessarily before the first water adventure, depending). And they need to be thought through so that a roughly equivalent set of changes are made to all the character classes. Not that every character or class has...

ElfQuest Rules were similar to RuneQuest/BRP, but the setting was just missing so much... like starting equipment. Did you just pick what you wanted or only what the GM gave you? Of course, there were no guidelines for the GM to use to decide what to give you. It was written for fans of the comic book, so they could re-live the adventures of the comic book characters. It was not a stand-alone...

Oh, get what you are doing, I totally get it. What you don't get is you are removing player agency or the importance of such agency. You give 4 outcomes for the entire adventure (or even 40 is an incredibly small number compared to LMoP as is). That is not of interest to me. You are increasing story telling where the DM narrates (or just reads) a bunch more than you see in your games. The lack...

As soon as you put to people into the mix, it will take longer, as soon as you have people who have to make decisions, it will take longer. If I remember right, a popular opinion on the forums here is that combats typically last 3-4 rounds. Since each round is ~6 seconds, that's 18-24 in-game seconds. Pretty quick to me. I will also say that combat in 5E is the fastest yet. If your combats are taking too long, then you need to get your group into using best practices. A single character's turn should typically take less than 60...

IMO, Mr. Howard, the author, was sitting around the house watching his kids and he was bored. Maybe he had a deadline and had to come up with something, anything, to get to his editor. Besides being poorly done, it still reaches it's objective, which is to bring a bunch of clicks to the page so that the site can claim all sorts of click for ad revenue.

TonyVargas ...approaches out?Closest to this, I suppose. I really lift from the fiction of Tanith Lee & Michael Moorcock, when it comes to the relationship of the mortal to the divine. Gods gain power, perhaps even derive existence, from their worshippers..... Thanks always want to when the idea that worshippers are batteries came from. I am not a follower of that idea.

Ok, here are some of changes that stand out. No progression is allowed in any hardcover instead of just Season 9 hardcover Dms can give out gold during the session instead of the end. Tier 1 and 2 same 25gp Tier 3 Changed to 180 Gp Tier 4 Down to 700 Gp. But no times your level. But PER HOUR. Sorry Morrus you forgot to punch in no GOLD for you. Mundane Treasure and Loot are gone again.

Some updates. NO progression will only be available to Season 9 PCs. You can loot some of the treasure. Tier 1 and Tier 2 25 GP * your level. Tier 3 75 * your level. Tier 4 750 * your level. Only tier 4 characters can buy legendary items. Magic items can only be traded within the same season people. Except for Fai Chen. New pcs must declare Season or Legacy.

Agreed, and I believe that it is supported both with historical fact and role playing reasons that no point in going for the hull. Do you want there to be a mechanical reason for attacking the hull? Think of the size of most of the components on a ship, they are roughly the same size or larger than a character or monster. So if a commoner is AC 10 to damage standing on the deck of a ship,...

Oh, and another reason I think small/short adventures will be better, if life happens and you don't finish, that's going to leave a poor experience. Like getting half-way through a game of Monopoly your first time (now why did we do this?). Multiple quests that he 'wins' at each time will leave him with 2, 3, or 4 'games' under his belt.

Why would you think anyone would attack the hull? Every RPG I play it with sailing vessels, we start by burning the sails of the other ship. That lets us either run away or close at our discretion. Then you pick off any artillery they have. Then close if you want. Ships are valuable if you can sail it back to port, and if not they carry valuable cargo you can loot. My understanding is...

I'd lean towards background over sub-class. But, regardless, some mechanics (assuming 5E); - advantage on fear saves (i.e. a grave robber has to be pretty resistant to fear) - proficient skills; investigation, religion, stealth, perception (pick 2?) (Don't see a need for athletics for digging, come on, how good do you need to be with a shovel?)

  • 01:21 AM - pukunui mentioned LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
LordEntrails: Using software to automate the process would certainly make alternative initiative methods more appealing. Unfortunately for me, I don't use any software when I run my games, so we'd be stuck with stopping the combat at the end of each round, having everyone reroll, having me shuffle the initiative tents I hang on my DM screen around to reflect the new order, then commencing with the next round of combat.

  • 12:52 PM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! I believe that is why LordEntrails suggested the dungeons be clear when the PCs get there. Leave signs they have fled or retreated and that they know the PCs are coming for them. Make it clear the cult is break up based on the success of the PCs. They should make them fell good and move the story along to where the cultist are making the final stand. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal... "Could be lethal" are the most exciting challenges to overcome and the ones the players might talked about for years later.
  • 01:56 AM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good against Imix. Ok, with 5 PCs I think you should probably be just fine against Imix (he is only CR 19) if the group is prepared. Ogremoch might be a bit tougher. However, you know your group the best. I would take @LordEntrails suggestion and then don't change anything with the Princes themselves.

  • 09:02 PM - Satyrn mentioned LordEntrails in post Miles per day on horseback: how many?
A less severe alternative might be that the horse could not be ridden for the rest of this day and the next. Presumably, speed is currently of value to the party, so that would still be a meaningful penalty. That's definitely more reasonable than what I'd do. I just don't like horses. Though that was before reading LordEntrails' post. Now I love horses.

  • 08:26 AM - Enevhar Aldarion mentioned LordEntrails in post Anyone else find this really irritating?
LordEntrails Elfcrusher I sort of lost track in this thread who was arguing which side of this, but basically it is legal for the owner of the product to make a backup or an alternate format of the product. That means you, personally, have to make it for it to be legal. As soon as anyone does this and then shares it with other people, even for free, then copyright laws, etc are being violated. You also need to keep ownership of the original for your copies to stay legal. For example, you can't just buy a DVD or CD or something, make a copy of it, and then sell or give away the original without making your copy illegal to own, in the US at least.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

  • 03:09 PM - canucksaram mentioned LordEntrails in post More details
@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

Yes, at a table with pencil and paper. With digital tools, specifically FG, it is easy to turn on re-rolls and not worry about it. Re-roll init also has other benefits too. Esp. along the lines of limiting metagaming and enhancing the chaos of combat. 5e is designed around each and every other person in an encounter having exactly one action between your actions. (With some epic creatures that are supposed to act as multiple creatures breaking that). When both PCs and foes have abilities and spells that last until the start of your turn and could have no affect not because you did anything wrong, but because you rolled better on initiative, there's a big problem. One reaction suddenly can become a lot less effective. Or a lot more. Rerolling initiative every round messes up every one of those assumptions, invalidating the design. They could have designed differently if they were having a variable initiative, but it wouldn't have been as streamlined. And it doesn't "even out", bec...

Melee or ranged? And wouldn't any group of mooks just grapple the wizard? Who would be dumb enough to let him get off more than one fireball etc? Let’s say melee, with each line of reinforcements 30’ further away. Assume wizard has no teleportation spells prepared. To keep it simple, no grappling or restraining allowed by the guards.

Did you like SR:A better because of the setting or the narration basis or was SR5E too crunchy or...? Both, to be honest. We really loved the tinkering that came from 4th and 5th edition; upgrading guns, weapons, cars, etc. However, Anarchy still allows that with more player agency. It's not quite so hard and meticulous to do all the fiddling about. It also includes mechanics specifically -for- more narrative play, letting players alter the narrative in unique and interesting ways. I'll openly admit, with all Shadowrun products, you have to thoroughly read the book because the layout is pretty bad. But between the rules of SR: Anarchy and the lore and flavor of Shadowrun, it really placed us in the setting.

Really helps me narrow it to 2020 or SR 3 or 5. I'll have to read some setting materials to see if I'm comfortable with the races and magic in SR. You can definitely have Shadowrun without the elves & magic, as long as you're not running adventures that require those elements. My group played a Shadowrun / XCOM campaign that started out with no metahumans (although they came in later via alien shenannigans).

Melee or ranged? And wouldn't any group of mooks just grapple the wizard? Who would be dumb enough to let him get off more than one fireball etc?Grabbing just keeps you from running away in 5e, they'd have to immobilize both his hands if the spell had S components, or gag him to stop V components, but those aren't things the Grappled condition covers. There's no OA for casting in melee and no reduction in effectiveness unless the spell attacks AC. 5e doesn't evoke the classic game in /all/ instances. ;(

Oh, since you have the numbers.... How does it fair for a 5th level fighter? 15th? 20th? What if the opponent are 2nd level? or 5th? Well, now we are bringing in a lot of other variables. I can code it, but it will probably be a couple days when I have free time (I DO have a life, LOL!). I just added the flanking option for the mooks, and that lowered the average significantly. Giving the mooks more hp and eventually extra attack will lower the average kills significantly as well.

Wheel of Time Another one of those written for fans of the books and not for gamers. No balance what so ever around character generation. Again, if you wanted to retell a story you had already read, it would do the job well, but for new stories? Just no reason to use it. Oh man, the d20 Wheel of Time system was a hot, flaming mess on a poopstick. We actually tried playing one session of it, and even the player who was a die-hard Wheel of Time fan basically agreed it was garbage.

Never played PbtA, so I'm open to the idea. Anything you can comment on about the system? Not a ton of mechanical crunch. Only players roll dice, which is 2d6. DMs get to use "Moves" based on consequences brought about by rolls. The Veil is about transhumanism and identity; "stats" are emotional states which are regularly shifting. The Sprawl is mission-based cyberpunk, more traditional in its conception of stats and playbooks. Everything revolves around performing merc jobs in a fairly classic cyberpunk setting. I saw another reference to The Sprawl, but the link was bad (wikipedia). Do you know if its still around or have a link for it? Sure, here's The Veil and here's The Sprawl. Gibson? That's new to me... William Gibson? Wrote Neuromancer?
  • 10:27 PM - Sacrosanct quoted LordEntrails in post Underwater Spellcasting
I should have expanded upon my thoughts. Changes to the way spells work is fine (and can add to the fun). But, they need to be communicated IRL to the player in a timely manner (not necessarily before the first water adventure, depending). And they need to be thought through so that a roughly equivalent set of changes are made to all the character classes. Not that every character or class has to be exactly equal, but so that all characters are still fun to play. I do agree that a genius level PC would have a good idea how his or her spells would work before actually doing them. So yes, the DM should let the player know and give them that list.
  • 09:57 PM - Sacrosanct quoted LordEntrails in post Underwater Spellcasting
Can you breath underwater? Then you can use verbal components. Can you move your hands/arms? Then somatic is is taken care of. Can you have a pouch of components or a focus? Then you are good to go. Are you worried about how a fireball or lightning bolt is affected underwater? Well, do you worry about a fighter swinging a sword or a ranger shooting an arrow underwater? Make similar changes to spells. Remember, you don't want to "punish" a character or a class because of something they can not control. But, it would be nice to have some simple underwater rules (like their are for weapons). I don't think changing the way spells work is punishing, because some spells don't work well, and other work better. So it sort of evens out
  • 03:55 PM - Travis Henry quoted LordEntrails in post Narrative/Novel D&D...ND&D. Imagine if the game played just like the D&D novels?
For a heavy narrative system, as others have pointed out, you should go with a different system. You could still use the D&D lore, but maybe use Fate, Genesys or Dungeon World, unless you want to design a whole new game, but it won't be D&D, anymore than Fate. As for having adventures match the pace of a novel of movie, it's not going to work. Many years ago, I played in a Buffy game. The GM wrote awesome adventures for us, which really felt like Buffy episides. It usually took us about 3 hours to complete an "episode." Picturing one of these sessions done in 50 minutes or so, and it would not have worked at all. Way too rushed. I believe rpgs are an awesome way to tell stories, but they are their own medium, just like there are differences between novels, comics, plays, tv and movies. Don't lose sight of the strengths of rpgs in your desire to tell stories that you love from novels.:) Oh, get what you are doing, I totally get it. What you don't get is you are removing player agency or the imp...

Still sounds like every adventure will be a railroad to me. At that point I would rather read a real novel than pretend I have any player agency with a setup like this one. Imagine if the Lost Mine of Phandelver was converted into ND&D? All of the key scenes would be there still: Cragmawk Hideout, Redbrand Hideout, Cragmaw Castle, the Lost Mine, and possibly all of the side-treks as well: Agatha the Banshee, Old Owl Well, Wyvern Tor, etc. And the key encounters of each scene. (But not every single little Goblin-in-a-Room.) But each scene is resolved with only a few rolls. A single combat roll for each key fight. A single social roll for each key social encounter. And compared to the 5E, there's a more extensive narrative boxed text for each scene - actually more than is in the Starter Set. For example, a bit of novellic "boxed text" for each and every hex on the map. And there are narrated "cut scenes" which quickly bring the party to the next scene, with only a bit of "travel exposition", and ...

    - Don't look up rules at the table, if the DM or another player isn't sure, the DM says, "Not sure, let's make a strength attack with proficiency for grappling, on the orc's turn he can try to break it with an opposed check." (Sure, they got the rule wrong, but who cares? Fun continues!)Who cares? Internal consistency very much cares, in that it somewhat demands that the rule that was got wrong must then stay that way for the rest of the campaign such that the campaign/setting can be and remain consistent with itself. Which means, take the time to either a) get it right or b) think long and hard on the downstream ramifications of whatever wrong ruling you have in mind before going with it.
  • 03:52 AM - Travis Henry quoted LordEntrails in post Narrative/Novel D&D...ND&D. Imagine if the game played just like the D&D novels?
You have good suggestions about best practices. But with all best practices in play, it still won't run as quick as a novel is read. If I remember right, a popular opinion on the forums here is that combats typically last 3-4 rounds. Since each round is ~6 seconds, that's 18-24 in-game seconds. Pretty quick to me. I'm talking about Real Time not In-World time. ND&D would be a ruleset that: 1) Runs exactly as quickly as the D&D Fiction stories. So the entire Dragonlance Chronicles in 17 table hours! 2) More fully supports the colorful descriptions (for both DM and player) of D&D action which are seen in D&D Fiction.

I mean, yeah, but he could have done so much better. "Hey guys, did you hear the news? They are gearing up for a complete revamp- they are leaning hard into a new, improved AEDU system and a rebranding .... Are you ready for W&W? You know, Warlocks and Warlords?" Some people ... just want to watch the world burn.

  • 10:16 AM - Riley37 quoted LordEntrails in post RPGA, Pathfinder Society and Adventurer's League - why are they all so terrible?
IMO, organized play suffers from one major flaw; the need to accommodate "competitive optimizers". What I mean by this is gamers who feel the need to have the best character at the table, to reach some sort of 'endgame' where they/their character is the best/most powerful/optimized/awesome character possible. I am not convinced that organized play NEEDS to accommodate those players. IMO, organized play *could* stop accommodating that style of play, and take active measures to discourage that kind of player from participating. This would require some clear intention, communicating that intention across the organization, and some brave willingness to ruthlessly enforce behavioral boundaries. I think it's *possible*. As for volunteer quality: I have known organizations with a high bar for volunteer quality. For some tasks, it's better to recruit and retain a dozen volunteers of reliably high skill and commitment, than to recruit hundreds and retain them all regardless of quality. Sometimes...
