Gee Sacrosanct, you mom was mean. My mom show me three times how to thread her Singer. Then as long as I didn't use her good scissors, I could sew what I wanted. (still kicking myself for giving her knee operated Singer to charity). Let see Fall of 1982 Ft Devens Mass, specialty store had some costumes, PX had some fabric. 1984 Ft Ord Calif. Stopped in 2004 due becoming parent to my parents, got tired of my group, needed more time with wife. Restarted around May 2016. My old group was a mixed of SCA and just D&D players. Since I couldn't do SCA due to caretaker role, gaming was my only downtime. However old group wanted to move Sunday gaming, 30 minutes away. No problem there. When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. Also in small town American you had Fabric shop which sold costume patterns. You also had Grannys who ONLY HAD SINGER sewing machines who could be talked into sewing stuff for teenagers. DAMN Sacrosanct makes 1984 sound like 1884.

I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. It's true to the times, and...

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Also as an outside observer I've wondered the same as the OP. One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? I mean it has seemed like for a long time PF just kept publishing more options, more adventures, more content; and that was their model. Did they simply run out of topics/content or...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

We played the rules as written (EDIT: or at least as we understood them), and didn't worry about it or try to justify loop-holes. So, no metal armor, no edged weapons, no flaming oil.

I'm with other, don't weaken Str by making all your stuff Dex based. Keep separate Parkour 'tasks' related to their appropriate skill. (Many/majority will be Dex, but some are Str.) For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

Yes, at a table with pencil and paper. With digital tools, specifically FG, it is easy to turn on re-rolls and not worry about it. Re-roll init also has other benefits too. Esp. along the lines of limiting metagaming and enhancing the chaos of combat.

Excellent. Absolutely helps and the type of input I was hoping for. Really helps me narrow it to 2020 or SR 3 or 5. I'll have to read some setting materials to see if I'm comfortable with the races and magic in SR. I also have to say the C-Punk 2077 that is coming out next year might be well timed for me.

  • 03:16 AM - Irennan mentioned LordEntrails in post New D&D product listed on Amazon
LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

  • 12:49 AM - Sacrosanct quoted LordEntrails in post What previous supplements would you like to see brought back for 5e?
You are wrong. You never need to be online to start the program or access your content. You do need to be online in 2 cases only; 1) when players are joining you from remote locations (i.e. using the internet), 2) if you have players local to your network that are connecting to your game and you use an Ultimate license and the player does not have a license. But neither are those cases relevant to use case you outlined because those are VTT capabilities, not an offline character and campaign builder that you said you wanted. Valid reason. And why it was one of the reasons I explicitly said was understandable. Not sure your price estimate is right, but FG is does cost more than "free" to do what you want. Ok, if it is to you, fine. But given their are numerous offline map builders available (many free), I have no idea why a single tool that does both is so important to you, but if that's your requirement you'll have to wait for FGU (~December 2019) to have everything in one package. ...

Yep, some do. And the best thing to do is to handle it quickly, openly, and relatively quietly. Why 'relatively quietly' (which is somewhat of a contradiction to 'openly')? Nothing is served by shutting up and agreeing never to speak of it again. For one thing, the convention's quick and decisive response is a good model for other groups to follow. For another, it's great PR for gaming to be a more welcoming place that it's historically been.

You two do know this exists for 5E right? I mean you are both regulars here you got to know right? Fantasy Grounds. sure, it's designed as a VTT, but it does everything you say you want. - Offline: yep, it is. - Creates and Updates PCs; yep, does that with drag and drop or direct text entry. Agreed it's not billed as a character manager, because you can't easily remove levels, but PC's only take minutes to create and update. - Creates Encounters; yep, does that. Calculates the CR and XP and links to all the NPC entries (plus places them on maps and into the Combat Tracker if you want that). - Digital copies of the Core Books; Yep, they are in a proprietary format so you have to read them in FG, but it's much like any e-pub with inline images, searching, etc. And you do have to buy the books you want or make them yourself. - Basic Map Making with Hyperlinks; OK, so the native map making suck...
  • 06:13 PM - TwoSix quoted LordEntrails in post What previous supplements would you like to see brought back for 5e?
Not if it does exactly what you want at a price you are ok with. Who cares what it is called? Now, if (as you state) you don't want to pay the price, that's fine. But folks should not continue to claim no such tool exists just because its called something different and costs more than they are willing to pay. If you can me a sample PDF of the characters it generates, I’ll see if it fits my desires well enough to try a demo.

No idea. Not familiar with the term. But, if you dismiss a person based on one idea of theirs then you are probably going to have to dismiss; Aristotle, Descartes, Thomas Aquinas, Confucius, Sun Tzu, Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson, Monte Cook, etcHaving looked it up, it would have been quite an argument starter during the 4E era, but in reality it's a nitpicking philosophical viewpoint. Short version: "dissociative mechanics are all game mechanics that are cause by player decision, not character decision," such as the Lucky feat in 5E. He then goes to talk about why they're "not roleplaying," since it's only roleplaying when you have the character make decisions. While I think you are generally correct that dismissing someone based on one idea isn't great, it does give you a good idea into the general mindset the person has about a similar topic. A good example of this for me Jeremy Crawford (head 5E rules guy); I have found from his ideas that he and I fundamentally disagree on how 5E should be playe...

  • 01:22 AM - Tony Vargas quoted LordEntrails in post D&D: Become Human
Justin Alexander's The Alexandrian. The guy that coined "dissociative mechanics?" Hard pass. Once the introductory arc wraps up, my players will have free rein to go whatever direction they want, and if they choose to explore the Kingdom Underhill they will find it mired in civil unrest. I'm hoping to get some advice on how to run this sort of adventure Players are more likely to engage with and care about this sort of situation if they have connections to the various factions. That means developing NPCs the players care about, which can be an up-hill climb. It also REALLY depends on the players and their attitudes, especially if they see an analogy to some RL controversies they have opinions about. So, it's likely to be ignored (oh, that kinda sucks, have we heard any rumors about treasure?) Or a source tension (politics are off limits, here, so no example). It's different if you telegraph that one faction is in the right and portray another as jerks, then it still might be a long...

  • 05:53 PM - Sacrosanct quoted LordEntrails in post Returning to 2nd Edition
You can still do that in any system, just make the saves or damage high enough that anything you want becomes just a lethal. Use the slow healing and other options in the DMG and you can do the same thing. Want Rot Grubs in 5E (or any other system)? Then just create them (I did, but not as lethal as 2E). . Well, it's more than just increasing damage and using slow healing in the DMG. You'd have to eliminate non magical healing completely Then cut all the PC's HP by about half. And get rid of the skill system. And change how spells work. Really, there is lot more to do than just increase damage. If you're going back old-school, go 1e. 1e, also known as "The Katana of D&D" is the only appropriate past edition to play.* AD&D. Accept no substitutes. *Okay, the Committee also accepts B/X (Moldvay/Cook) as an answer. 1e with 2e's THAC0, thief skill progression, and the bard class (for those sick enough to want to play a bard). I compromise ;)
  • 05:20 PM - lowkey13 quoted LordEntrails in post Returning to 2nd Edition
A lot of those reasons were exactly what we didn't like about 2E. DM narrated death with no chance of the players doing anything meaningful to cause it or prevent it. Or perhaps a single save or die roll. You can still do that in any system, just make the saves or damage high enough that anything you want becomes just a lethal. Use the slow healing and other options in the DMG and you can do the same thing. Want Rot Grubs in 5E (or any other system)? Then just create them (I did, but not as lethal as 2E). But, if 2E is the only thing that you want, then play it as is. No need to justify it. No. You should have to justify it, in much the same way a person has to justify a love for gnomes. "What, like, a garden gnome? Wait ... you want to PLAY a gnome? Why would you ever do that?" 2e is the rapier of editions. I mean, sure, I suppose there are people out there, justifying it, telling themselves, "Self, you know what would be awesome? Smiting with a rapier!" Don't be that person. If you're go...

Well, I will say that over on Fantasy Grounds their is actually a growing 2E community. I'm sure it's growth is limited, but since they introduced an official 2E AD&D ruleset and the core books to go with it a couple months ago, their is a bit of a revival over there. No idea how long it will last or how big it will grow, but if you want to play 2E, you can do it anywhere in the world.I thought that was pretty cool that they decided to support 2e on fantasy grounds.

  • 11:51 PM - Reynard quoted LordEntrails in post Returning to 2nd Edition
I suspect it is just nostalgia. I know it is for me. You mention a few mechanic things here (level limits and NWPs) but I have to wonder if those actually mean anything to you? Do they some how make the game more fun? I can't imagine it would... I mean 5E sort of already has NWPs and how did level limits ever add to the enjoyment? As for Faux medieval fantasy, if you can somehow unburden yourself from the d20 era of excesses, you can do that just as well in 5E and you could in 2E.Just go back and try to run one of your 2E campaigns in 5E. Go door bash the Undermountain as it was meant to be run, not like DoMM does. Go run Barrier Peaks or Saltmarsh or whatever. Run it like you would run it in a faux medieval setting without any of the excesses of the d20 era and I think you will find what you are looking for.So there are a couple things: Racial class restrictions and level limits enforce setting, as does the elimination of the more "fantastical" races and classes. More than that, I LIKE the weir...

Morrus, Any chance of getting FG version? Since I only buy all my 5E stuff on FG now, it's a requirement for me. If FG wants to produce it, we’d be happy to license it to them. But we don’t put anything in a Kickstarter we can’t deliver as soon as it ends.

Again, not supported. 5 new rulesets this year. I usually don't bother replying to anything you say. You've never once accepted that another viewpoint could exist, much less changed your mind as a result of a single criticism or adopted a single feature request as necessary at any point. Case in point, not a single point I raised was even acknowledged, everything I said was absolutely 100% (or 99% lol citation please) incorrect, and I am alone in my opinion that improvements can and should be made. But I'll point out that at in least one instance, the 2nd Ed ruleset, was aided by the advancement (no, the PUSH) by a skilled developer who stepped in, ignored the gatekeepers and territorial pissing, and patiently but consistently pushed for answers that weren't ever made available in the documentation, but rather held in the heads of a few information hoarders who argue that digging through a decade of forum posts is a rite of passage any ruleset coder should endure. I think it's more like big fis...

Have you ever been in a forest? What type of forest? Look at the image from the video @Draegn posted. Those are old growth trees that might not have any branches closer than 15 feet to the ground with a trunk that may be two feet in diameter. Then you have "new" forests like you will find in much of the US, where the tree limbs touch the ground and moving into them is at least difficult terrain and provides visible cover from outside the tree. Both of those types of forest will have roughly the same number of tree per area. But both play very differently in an RPG. The numbers work, if you have the same understanding as those who wrote them. If you have a different understanding, or make different assumptions, then change them. Oh, and don't put the trees on every grid intersection or every grid center. Spread them around or your forest will look fake. Yes, I've been in forests before, both the kind where the first limbs of the trees are 15 feet up, and the kind where the limbs are ...

I don't see how you are converting "50% trees" to 860 trees per acre. Are you assuming 1/2 a tree per 5 foot square? Cuz that's not how trees work. What they are saying is that in that case trees cover approximately half of the area. Given that a single tree might have a diameter of 15 or 20 feet, that means it covers 6 to ~10 squares. So then you need to have that much open space. OK, that's one way to look at it. Except... this means that standing under a tree allows you to use the tree as cover, or to climb it, even if you are standing 10 or 15 feet away from the trunk, and even if the branches are high enough that you don't have to duck. Also, how then do you interpret massive trees in medium or dense forest? If a "massive tree" square is occupied by the trunk of a tree thick enough to prevent entry, then "10% massive trees" in medium forest comes to 174 trees per acre and "20% massive trees" in dense forest comes to 348 trees/acre. Which is still an awfully lot, especially when we're ta...
