Ok why not allow it? The pc used both his move, his action, and his bonus action to either run away or get closer. So slow monsters learn to shell and peel the fighter first and fast food is not good for you.

When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. It's true to the times, and...

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

So something like; "We've created products for all the good ideas we have, so we are going to change the rules just enough that we can re-use all out ideas and just convert them to the new rules." Yea, that will go over well.

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Have you been between San Diego and San Fran? There's not much empty space out there except Camp Pendelton north of San Diego. And it's not exactly like New England is a megacity sprawl. Reminds me of a story when I was staying with my Grandmother as a teenager. We were going to be driving from upstate New York (Balston Spa) to Vermont (Bennington) and she was adamant that we make sure to take...

I said Other, and only Other. Here's why I didn't/wouldn't pick the others. - Monsters, their are so many out there that are good quality and free, why pay for more? i.e. 1d6 Adventures/Monster a Day has something like 400+ already that I've never had time to go through. - Magic Items, maybe. Because I haven't yet come across any strong collections. But I'd be looking for a large set, not a...

Also as an outside observer I've wondered the same as the OP. One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? I mean it has seemed like for a long time PF just kept publishing more options, more adventures, more content; and that was their model. Did they simply run out of topics/content or...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

But they will see your light coming well before you will see them. IMO, you can see a light source at a range of 10 times it's dim range. So, the NPCs will see the party's light source long before either side sees each other. Dancing lights, I love, but remember, it only sheds dim light, so you are at disadvantage for perception checks if they are hiding from you. 1. Yes they see the light coming. The probably heard you coming as well. But, they cannot directly target you with a spell without seeing you, and they have trouble pinpointing your space as well. 2. Yes it's dim light, though if you have darkvision you see normal in dim light.

That is just flat out wrong, again. Is that why you cut out and ignored all the quoted prices? For most official content, FG is about 60% of price of the same official content as Roll20. In general 5E stuff is $30 on FG and $50 on Roll 20. Whoops. That was sloppy of me. I looked at the first entry on the list and did not scan down. My apologies. There are two fiscal responsibility arguments here, one against the exorbitant cost of FG, and one against having to pay twice for game content, and in the heat of the moment I made the mistake of conflating them. Honest answer, it depends. I appreciate your response. I've said my piece, and continue to stand by it, barring the above. You may proceed with your shilling without further interruption from me. :)

Free game content; Nope, not true, their is free game content for numerous game systems (D&D 1e, 3, 3.5, 5e, PF, Savage World, etc) available for free on their community forums and some for 5E on the DMsGuild. It is, admittedly, only a tiny fraction of what is available world-wide. As for free content that is behing a "gate", maybe you mean the D&D Basic Rules & the 5E SRD? I know at one time they were not distributed with the free license of FG, but that is no longer true, and hasn't been for some time. I have no idea how much free content is available for Roll20 other than the 5E SRD and 5E Basic Rules. What else is there? The only free content that concerns me is official rulesets. I'm not interested in fancruft, and I'm not interested in having to manually import readily available open source content into a system I am paying for. https://roll20.net/compendium/ Yes Roll 20 you can play and GM completely for free. In that use case, Roll20 is cheaper, no doubt, no argument....

So they’re sorta re-writing their software in a different programming language? So how does that affect the users of FG? Does it make FG do something it couldn’t do before? (Not being awkward; I just haven’t the foggiest what this means). It will probably make their existing VTT more attractive and robust, their databases run more quickly and smoothly, and their service more reliable. At least, that should be their goal. Any new functionality will be at SmiteWorks' discretion. It apparently also means they get to send another invoice to their users who were savvy enough not to opt for their 'software as a service' rip-off scheme. Just because you have an emotional dislike of something, doesn't mean you should be be spreading misinformation or "alternative facts". Not an opinion: The Ultimate license, which a gamemaster needs to run a table without his players paying anything, costs $10/month or $149 flat. This includes no game content that isn't available for free elsewhere, ...
  • 09:55 PM - Morrus quoted LordEntrails in post Fantasy Grounds Unity KS Announced
The move to Unity? So right now, FG is a whole custom app written in XML, LUA and maybe C++. The networking code, map handling, physics engine for the dice, et al is written and maintained by SmiteWorks. So if they want to do something like support 64-bit architecture, they have to re-write the whole things. If they want to change to using a different network protocol, they have to write the whole sub-routine. It gives them absolute control, but also absolute responsibility for everything. With Unity, their are multiple libraries or packages of code for things like displaying images, or networking, or physics engines etc. So, SW just has to decide on which packages they want to integrate, write the code so that the packages can talk to each other (i.e. the network package passes this data set to the image display package, and variables x, y, and z, in the network package equal variables m, n, o in the display package). Think of it like an airplane. You could design and build one from th...

Why even engage in a discussion if you have nothing positive to contribute? Are you only here to troll and spread misinformation? Actually, I was here to make a light-hearted joke, which considering the comments on the costs related to Fantasy Grounds back when they first launched, people would probably find funny. You're really just taking all the fun out of it and making a huge deal over a harmless comment.
  • 09:45 PM - quoted LordEntrails in post Fantasy Grounds Unity KS Announced
So you come into a thread, start spewing misinformation, and your response is "Don't bother me" when called on your lies? Very mature. Your tone does not inspire a positive response.
  • 09:40 PM - quoted LordEntrails in post Fantasy Grounds Unity KS Announced
I don't think you know what you are talking about... 1) if you own the hard covers, you never had to buy them in FG. You can use it without, or you could enter the info yourself. If you wanted to buy them either because it makes reference easy and character building simple, then you could. This is no different than the discussions around DDB. 2) With FGU you do not have to re-buy any content. Their is expected to be a license upgrade cost if you ahve the one-time license. But that is no different than if you buy a new version of Microsoft Office or Quick Books, or Turbo Tax. If you have a subscription license, then their is no (known/expected) change in cost. So, no, never was a need to re-buy anything, and no their is no option to re-buy them with FGU. Just because you have an emotional dislike of something, doesn't mean you should be be spreading misinformation or "alternative facts". Spin it however you like bro. Don't bother me none.
  • 09:09 PM - Morrus quoted LordEntrails in post Fantasy Grounds Unity KS Announced
For most use cases it costs less than Roll20. Unity is a software development platform, or engine. Typically it is used for games and works on multiple platforms (like console, PC, phone, etc). It has a bunch of "libraries" or functions that can be used (or bought for use) that helps a developer not have to reinvent the wheel. Basically it is a set of customize able building blocks of functions. A lot like a vBulletin or PHPBB is for forum software, but Unity is not narrowed to a single functionality, though it is tailored for things that games (solo, online, MMO, etc) typically want. The Unity website; https://unity.com/ So how does that affect Fantasy Grounds?
  • 09:00 PM - DMZ2112 quoted LordEntrails in post Fantasy Grounds Unity KS Announced
For most use cases it costs less than Roll20. Yes, in the sense that every RPG table has four to eight of the free use cases and one of the $10/month use case. :)

  • 05:51 AM - merwins quoted LordEntrails in post Realigning a magic item
Anyway, I don't like the idea of forcing anything sentient to change it's alignment. I don't care that it is a magic weapon, if you believe souls have free will and that is what makes them a soul, and a soul is what makes an item sentient, then no one can force a soul to change alignment. I find this an interesting perspective to explore. Does this mean there is no opportunity for true redemption or corruption? You can only change a sentient thing's behavior, but not its nature? Obviously, when you're discussing the idea of "souls" this may extend beyond magic items to characters as well. I'm not particularly interested in your real-life attitudes, just the in-game ones. With that focus, I would point out that with such a black-and-white perspective of the intrinsic nature of reality, a lot of fantasy stories have the potential to break down, especially as we (as readers or viewers) identify with characters in a story. I haven't thought about it deeply enough, but I'm not sure you can ev...

  • 08:05 AM - Harzel quoted LordEntrails in post Incorporeal Creatures Carrying Objects
Do they have a physical attack? Then they can move objects. At least among the undead that have Incorporeal Movement their attacks do necrotic or force damage. It's not explicitly stated, but to me that indicates that they don't have a 'physical' attack in the usual sense. Is there an example of a creature that has Incorporeal Movement and an attack that does bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage? Also, look at Unseen Servant. It's listed as incorporeal, but states it has a strength of 2 and can move objects. Looking at the spell description, I don't see the word 'incorporeal'. So yea, for me, if it has a strength score or a physical attack, then it can intereact with the physical world. Is there a creature that does not have a strength score? I don't know of any, but I might have missed something.
  • 01:50 AM - Von Ether quoted LordEntrails in post Tough Truths About the Game Industry
What technology are you waiting for? A card with a unique code that can be redeemed for a digital product is already available. All you have to do is a print a card with a unique code (number, QR, bar code, etc) on it and have your online store be able to track the code for a specific product (which many platforms can already do). For now, it's too hackable as you said. And then you will find that people will hack your code system and then people will be stealing your PDFs and then the people who bought the real codes will get mad since your online system will tell them the code is invalid... While parts of the concept are here, they're still too rough around the edges to make it a viable way to sell PDF in a reliable fashion that's affordable for smaller companies.
  • 12:58 AM - Von Ether quoted LordEntrails in post Tough Truths About the Game Industry
But I also don't think your description of purchases are very accurate. Sure, purchases at a con are typically impulsive, but I would guess that makes up maybe 1% of RPG sales? Most RPGs are bought online, then second most sales are at FLGSs/Bookstores (and only a portion of those are impulse buys). I was using the convention as an example, but you could use the cards at FLGS/Bookstores too. And while con sales are a smaller percentage, who they are sold to is a different manner. Everyone premieres stuff at GenCon not for just the profit, but also for the word of mouth. (Look at this cool game guys, which you can't get for another three months!) Which makes the importance of con sales out of proportion to their proceeds. So you mean like a code or coupon card? You can do that already, but it's expensive since you would have to have the cards/coupons custom made and then you would have to setup all the coupons in your (presumably) online store. And then you will find that people will hac...

They are called Visa Gift Cards. You go to one of probably a million different stores, pay in advance for them, then you go to your favorite PDF seller and buy the PDF you want and use the Visa card to pay for it. Novel huh? Except you still don't a physical product that you can put on a shelf or sell at the table during a show. Gaming is an impulse buy. If they want to buy your core print book and three PDF adventures, you can sell them the book and three cards right there at GenCon. When they get home, they might forget (or at GenCon already have blown their budget.) I'm talking about a delivery system, not a method of payment.
