When it comes to lethality to characters their are several factors. One of them are default rules. Another is optional rules. Then of course you have house/table rules. You also have attitude/personality of the DM and players. With the DM obviously (?) dominating the tone. So let's break that down to a few factors/abbreviations; - RAW - Other Rules - People It seems blatantly obvious to...

Ok why not allow it? The pc used both his move, his action, and his bonus action to either run away or get closer. So slow monsters learn to shell and peel the fighter first and fast food is not good for you.

When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

I suggest you do three things. Talk to your players about tactics. AKA RUN AWAY. Get a plastic skull and start writing pcs names on it. (I bring out skully when the tough should be going). Adjust the encounter (this requires xp to do on the fly.)

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

So something like; "We've created products for all the good ideas we have, so we are going to change the rules just enough that we can re-use all out ideas and just convert them to the new rules." Yea, that will go over well.

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Have you been between San Diego and San Fran? There's not much empty space out there except Camp Pendelton north of San Diego. And it's not exactly like New England is a megacity sprawl. Reminds me of a story when I was staying with my Grandmother as a teenager. We were going to be driving from upstate New York (Balston Spa) to Vermont (Bennington) and she was adamant that we make sure to take...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

I'm with other, don't weaken Str by making all your stuff Dex based. Keep separate Parkour 'tasks' related to their appropriate skill. (Many/majority will be Dex, but some are Str.) For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

  • 03:16 AM - Irennan mentioned LordEntrails in post New D&D product listed on Amazon
LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

  • 08:05 AM - Harzel quoted LordEntrails in post Incorporeal Creatures Carrying Objects
Do they have a physical attack? Then they can move objects. At least among the undead that have Incorporeal Movement their attacks do necrotic or force damage. It's not explicitly stated, but to me that indicates that they don't have a 'physical' attack in the usual sense. Is there an example of a creature that has Incorporeal Movement and an attack that does bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage? Also, look at Unseen Servant. It's listed as incorporeal, but states it has a strength of 2 and can move objects. Looking at the spell description, I don't see the word 'incorporeal'. So yea, for me, if it has a strength score or a physical attack, then it can intereact with the physical world. Is there a creature that does not have a strength score? I don't know of any, but I might have missed something.
  • 01:50 AM - Von Ether quoted LordEntrails in post Tough Truths About the Game Industry
What technology are you waiting for? A card with a unique code that can be redeemed for a digital product is already available. All you have to do is a print a card with a unique code (number, QR, bar code, etc) on it and have your online store be able to track the code for a specific product (which many platforms can already do). For now, it's too hackable as you said. And then you will find that people will hack your code system and then people will be stealing your PDFs and then the people who bought the real codes will get mad since your online system will tell them the code is invalid... While parts of the concept are here, they're still too rough around the edges to make it a viable way to sell PDF in a reliable fashion that's affordable for smaller companies.
  • 12:58 AM - Von Ether quoted LordEntrails in post Tough Truths About the Game Industry
But I also don't think your description of purchases are very accurate. Sure, purchases at a con are typically impulsive, but I would guess that makes up maybe 1% of RPG sales? Most RPGs are bought online, then second most sales are at FLGSs/Bookstores (and only a portion of those are impulse buys). I was using the convention as an example, but you could use the cards at FLGS/Bookstores too. And while con sales are a smaller percentage, who they are sold to is a different manner. Everyone premieres stuff at GenCon not for just the profit, but also for the word of mouth. (Look at this cool game guys, which you can't get for another three months!) Which makes the importance of con sales out of proportion to their proceeds. So you mean like a code or coupon card? You can do that already, but it's expensive since you would have to have the cards/coupons custom made and then you would have to setup all the coupons in your (presumably) online store. And then you will find that people will hac...

They are called Visa Gift Cards. You go to one of probably a million different stores, pay in advance for them, then you go to your favorite PDF seller and buy the PDF you want and use the Visa card to pay for it. Novel huh? Except you still don't a physical product that you can put on a shelf or sell at the table during a show. Gaming is an impulse buy. If they want to buy your core print book and three PDF adventures, you can sell them the book and three cards right there at GenCon. When they get home, they might forget (or at GenCon already have blown their budget.) I'm talking about a delivery system, not a method of payment.

Run Perception and Investigation the way I do, which is the way I think they are intended to be used. Perception tells you something is wrong. It tells you their is a draft, or scuff marks, or that something is off. It never tells you what or how. Sure, perception tells you the wall has a draft that might be a secret door, but without investigation you will never find where the door is or how to open it. Sure, perception tells you their is a trip wire across the hallway or a switch/trigger on the door hinge. But you will never figure out how to bypass or disarm it unless you use investigation. Perception tells you the gate guard as a tattoo half hidden on his forearm, but only intelligence is going to tell you anything about it. Low Int is fine in my games, but don't expect to know why. Go ahead and be a bull in a china shop, but their will be no finesse or innuendo etc. The way I've interpreted it in my game is that perception allows you do notice things that you are looking for, wh...

  • 05:13 AM - Flexor the Mighty! quoted LordEntrails in post Stirges have cemented themselves as my favorite D&D monsters at this point...
Rot Grubs! Hit them with that last session too! They found a pit trap with a dessicated hobbit down in it. So they take the karate man, as he calls himself, and after tying him off lower him down to get the belt off the body. Well he can't get it lose without touching the body so he gets annoyed and just grabs it so they can pull him up. I'm shocked at this foolishness but you have to go with what the players tell you. So they haul him up and he's got triple rot grubs in him. So after a round of confusion they put torches to him. So they are torching while healing and the one cleric got overzealous and gave him an extra round with the torch for good measure...only to have one jump on him. So they had to start torching him as well. It was great and the cleric was pretty much menacing the monk with a torch for the rest of the session.

  • 12:10 AM - Oofta quoted LordEntrails in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
I think we are mostly in agreement here. But not here. Or atleast it appears you are forgetting a very important, imo, part of the OP. The player does not have a regular DM. The DM can be someone they have never played with before. Their is no guarantee, in this situation, of their being an existing relationship with the DM prior to sitting down at the table. Sure, the player could wait until they sit down and ask then, but then they are in a predicament. Because they may have already used a limited resource (treasure points AND a magic item) that then become useless at that table for that game. That is something they wish to avoid. And reasonably so. Everyone stating how they would run their game doesn't help the OP unless they are running one of the games the OP happens to sit down at. It is completely reasonable for the OP to ask for as much RAW support one way or the other so that they can make an informed decision. And if needed discuss it with the DM of the moment at the mome...

  • 06:07 PM - Oofta quoted LordEntrails in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
Except the PHB is not clear if Studded Leather is "Metal Armor". Heat Metal seems to indicate it might not be. Typically we think of studs as being made of metal. But does that mean it's metal armor? The PHB just doesn't say. Hence my original posting. Sometimes the rules are not clear and it comes down to a DM's ruling. I know how I would rule, other DM's would rule differently. Show some respect for the person willing to judge your game and ask them. Just don't expect the same answer from every DM or make assumptions that they will agree with what you want.

If I did not address a post, it doesn't mean I'm not interested in it's content, I might have forgotten or did't realize its utility. It's definitely not an oversight if I didn't address RAI or RAF content. [...] Unless you always play with this DM, I'd suggest buying both and taking the armor that is accepted by the DM on the adventure (make sure to talk to them in advance). The majority of games I change GMs. I have a limited amount of TPs and I'd rather keep them for something I'll want to redeem right away rather than redeeming something I should ask every game if it's applicable and there's a non-negligible chance it won't be (applicable). I could do that if I ever go so much TP that what would remain (after the potential claim) which I could grab at least 2 nice items (right after its unlock). [...] All that said, I would see if AL has made a ruling or statement on this. Hopefully they have, but I can't find one. AFAIK AL seldom make rules and mostly let GMs make their best interpretation...

Uh, people have been making that comment to you for about 10 pages now... Yeah, I'm such a radical. Following the guidelines on how many encounters between long rests, doing adventures that aren't dungeon crawls, occasionally fighting dragons out in the open in terrain of the dragon's choosing not the PCs, throwing the unexpected and unusual at the players, not assuming that they're going to have just the right spell available. Making one simple house rule to make strength based PCs feel worthwhile. Yep, I'm the worst.

  • 08:47 PM - Saelorn quoted LordEntrails in post Ranged Options for All Classes
So, did anyone ever address the point made a few time by various people earlier in this thread that choices have consequences and that's a good thing? That not every class can or should be competant at every aspect of the game? And in this case; both ranged and melee? At least as far as D&D is concerned, combat isn't an optional activity. Everyone needs to participate, or else they might as well leave the table for an hour and go play Mario Kart. If your character build options are to either build for Dexterity, in which case you get to play the game; or build for Strength, in which case you get to sit out for an hour because you can't contribute; then that's a trap option. That choice shouldn't be in the game. That's poor game design.
  • 06:30 PM - Oofta quoted LordEntrails in post Ranged Options for All Classes
I still don't see a problem. Their are choices, and consequences to those choices. And not every choice has an equal impact on each aspect of the game. Sounds like a good system to me. When two builds fulfill basically the same combat role but one is close to on-par with the other for melee (with other significant benefits) but is far, far better at ranged I see it as an issue. Add in that many people won't realize it's an issue that cannot be resolved until mid-to-high levels makes it even worse. It's an easy fix so I tweak the rules in a way that brings back some balance and gets a little closer to reality and myth.

Dual wield rapiers and get within a point or two of damage per round of two-handed weapons.

I think 4E had a supplement on the Shadowfell. I can go dig it up if you need the name. Quick google search would suggest that it is The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond. Thanks for the heads up. This should prove to be a useful resource as my campaign setting is based on the Dawn War cosmology.
