Gee Sacrosanct, you mom was mean. My mom show me three times how to thread her Singer. Then as long as I didn't use her good scissors, I could sew what I wanted. (still kicking myself for giving her knee operated Singer to charity). Let see Fall of 1982 Ft Devens Mass, specialty store had some costumes, PX had some fabric. 1984 Ft Ord Calif. Late 1984 West Berlin PX had fabric. And as soon as I...

Stopped in 2004 due becoming parent to my parents, got tired of my group, needed more time with wife. Restarted around May 2016. My old group was a mixed of SCA and just D&D players. Since I couldn't do SCA due to caretaker role, gaming was my only downtime. However old group wanted to move Sunday gaming, 30 minutes away. No problem there. But they wanted to do multiple systems; a little problem...

When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. It's true to the times, and...

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Also as an outside observer I've wondered the same as the OP. One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? I mean it has seemed like for a long time PF just kept publishing more options, more adventures, more content; and that was their model. Did they simply run out of topics/content or...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

We played the rules as written (EDIT: or at least as we understood them), and didn't worry about it or try to justify loop-holes. So, no metal armor, no edged weapons, no flaming oil.

I'm with other, don't weaken Str by making all your stuff Dex based. Keep separate Parkour 'tasks' related to their appropriate skill. (Many/majority will be Dex, but some are Str.) For instance; - running up two close walls, Strength (Athletics). - jumping off a stair case and landing in a small area and not falling, Dexterity (Acrobatics) - jump distances based on Str, landing as desired...

You can (and many do) spend hours and hours prepping. I used to. Probably 10 hours for every session. But, that's not needed and I don't spend nearly that amount of time any more. Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

Yes, at a table with pencil and paper. With digital tools, specifically FG, it is easy to turn on re-rolls and not worry about it. Re-roll init also has other benefits too. Esp. along the lines of limiting metagaming and enhancing the chaos of combat.

Excellent. Absolutely helps and the type of input I was hoping for. Really helps me narrow it to 2020 or SR 3 or 5. I'll have to read some setting materials to see if I'm comfortable with the races and magic in SR. I also have to say the C-Punk 2077 that is coming out next year might be well timed for me.

  • 03:16 AM - Irennan mentioned LordEntrails in post New D&D product listed on Amazon
LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

  • 07:03 PM - 5ekyu quoted LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
Neither of you are getting it, which is ok because I didn't really explain it. First, the player likes re-roll initiative. It adds more variables to the combats, which are otherwise fairly boring for him. It's not that he can just predict what the other players will do, but without much effort he knows what is otherwise going to statistically happen. 'The two npcs will die on turn 2, and this PC will need healing on turn 3 and ...' With fixed initiative he knows that he can attack this round and their is only a 7% chance he will be knocked unconscious before the cleric can heal him. Or that if the wizard casts XYZ then that means that the party defeats the bad guy in x rounds. With re-roll init, their is more uncertainty and chaos. It takes nothing away from the players ability to effect and enjoy combat. It adds enjoyment for everyone at the table. Even with this, you might not agree or understand. That's ok. Try to think of some general standing on a parapet overlooking ten thousand creatures ...
  • 11:55 AM - 5ekyu quoted LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
That's why I said: Of course I meant 'suck' and also Maxperson proved us both wrong with the way his group handles it. It depends on the players. I have one player who is a damn near genius. If we don't shuffle initiative and I don't do anything crazy with the NPCs and he can predict the other players actions then by the end of the first round he can pretty have the entire encounter resolved in his head. So, when I run cons and other players, static initiative is fine. But with my standard group, it pretty much needed. There is no right or wrong answer, just what works or doesn't work for any given group :)"It depends on the players. I have one player who is a damn near genius. If we don't shuffle initiative and I don't do anything crazy with the NPCs and he can predict the other players actions then by the end of the first round he can pretty have the entire encounter resolved in his head." • 07:14 AM - Bacon Bits quoted LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
It depends on the players. I have one player who is a damn near genius. If we don't shuffle initiative and I don't do anything crazy with the NPCs and he can predict the other players actions then by the end of the first round he can pretty have the entire encounter resolved in his head. That's... really not that difficult. The uncertainty in combat is not in guessing what the other participants will do, trebly so if you know the player. The uncertainty is in how successful their actions will be. The vast majority of combatants actions in D&D will be unchanged in any given encounter regardless of initiative with the sole exception of the first round (i.e., when spells are likely to be their most potent).
  • 01:12 AM - 5ekyu quoted LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
We do Dex check for every PC and NPC and reroll every round. YEa, on paper it would such doing it our way. But, we use FG and so it's simple. It also does a really good job of keeping everyone engaged. because you never know how long until you act again so you almost always have to be ready. Not for us. Again, we let FG handle all the that. Things (effects) just expire on the initiative number of when they were cast or began. Sure, this means that if you cast a spell on a low init number it the next round everyone rolls high it doesn't affect as many creatures, but over time it averages out and it adds more chaos to combat. And since we are using FG, it adds no bookkeeping or difficulty.Yes, you have to fabricate additional house rules and deal with chances dpells and effects might be utterly useless or doubly effective - not something we see as adds. We used floating init for like two sessions before tossing it cuz of so many unreasonable outcomes.

Have you considered going chat based? Not as fast as voice, but much more tolerant of poor internet connections. And those people that play using chat say it's much more immersive than voice. Or what about play by post? I know, too slow, not the same, etc. But if you want to play, you are going to have to make a compromise somewhere. If you can't play FtF because of where you live, you're going to have to compromise. I hate play by post. I've tried. Repeatedly. I just cannot handle the slow, nor the lack of interactivity. • 11:03 AM - Nailen quoted LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
By seeing consequences and results, they will no longer feel like they are slogging through fight after fight or dungeon after dungeon. Yep, I see what you're saying. However, the campaign fatigue is hitting the DM (me) as well as the players - I wanna get playing, but I don't want to just drop the campaign. Overall we've all enjoyed it - using event based levelling has been great. I've levelled them after each outpost/temple which keeps the new skills coming at a good pace. One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! There's a good level of trust between players and DM - they know that if an NPC encourages them to hurry down to the Fane that I wouldn't do it in an attempt to kill them all. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal...

  • 09:11 AM - Tormyr quoted LordEntrails in post Color Maps for Virtual Tabletops by Me
Thanks for sharing :) And I too like your style. Unique and colorful, a nice change from all the dark and brooding maps :) Myself, and many others I know, prefer maps without grids on them for VTT use (both Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds). And then to help align the program grids to the maps, putting an off-color 5ft square in one of the left corners helps us align them. As a long-time user of VTT as well, I definitely agree here. Maps for VTT benefit from not having the grids on them. Just make the map align to a certain dimension* and then say what it is. The user then sets up the map to that size and then is done. This allows the user to operate without a grid, use a different grid color, or add their own terrain objects without disrupting the grid. *For the dimensions, setting out the dpi and making sure the map dimensions are a multiple of that makes it much easier for a user. A 32x20 map at 100 dpi that is 3200x2000 pixels is super easy to use and handles zooming in fairly well. The user drops...

  • 01:09 AM - Quickleaf quoted LordEntrails in post Forced March question
So thoughts on the shortcuts/challenges. #1) Garden Earthmotes Nature skills to use? Or maybe athletics check to succeed at swinging between motes? Failure means they slow down, failure by 5 means they take 2d6 damage? Could the Ranger make a check to give advantage to the others on their checks? ("Hey, let me show you how you do this...") Does the party have any flight or teleport abilities they could use to assist? If they don't use them, then they fall behind because they have to travel through the swamp? Could they choose to go through the swamp and use exhaustion to balance out? Yeah, Athletics checks (falling damage on failed check), grung jumping, jump or plant growth spell, cape of the mountebank – I imagine all those strategies/resources will come into play. An aarakocra monk PC is actually joining the party, and he'll be the only one with flight capability so far. Not sure yet how I'd incorporate his flight into the earthmotes shortcut yet. Also, searching and gathering herbs t...

  • 10:31 PM - Aiden_Keller_ quoted LordEntrails in post Kids playing dnd?
Lots of great advice in this thread. I will only add some things I didn't see mentioned. Very rough rule of thumb is that kids can hold attention when they like something for about 10 minutes per year of age. And that's if they really are absorbed in it. I would plan for half of that. So a 6 year old (6x10/2) for 30 minutes and a 10 year old (10x10/2) for 50 minutes. When I started with my son at about 6 years old, we used Lego minifigs. One for him, one for me, and two wolfs for companions. The wolves were models after our family dogs, and I made sure they wouldn't die! We started by me explaining the stats, and then asking him which his character was best at, etc. Then using the standard array I assigned the stats in order. Similar with the classes, and I kept it to the 4 from the Basic Rules. Great point! I only hold a 1-2 hour session for the middle school children I DM for. The dog thing cracked me up!
  • 08:34 PM - Quickleaf quoted LordEntrails in post Forced March question
Glad they are helpful. It's an interesting design challenge :) It certainly is! B-) I'm not sure, and one of the reasons I was uncomfortable with the potion suggestion. The other things to consider in this regards are the suggestions of Hit Dice being one of the resources. I would probably just keep it to one or the other, but the possibility of mixing both of them is a possibility (and would make the design that much harder!) Allowing healing potions to replace exhaustion is going to up the value of such potions. But, since your party is so prone to avoid exhaustion, this might actually bring some more variety into the general campaign (since now they won't be so adverse to avoiding exhaustion at all costs). It will shift the game, but I don't think a single level per potion and maybe only one such use per short/long (?) rest might not have long term negative effects. I think in your case its worth allowing it. This is a good compromise. And may mean the one/rest might not be needed. ...

  • 11:05 PM - Quickleaf quoted LordEntrails in post Forced March question
Thanks for all your comments. It's a bit of a challenge figuring out how to judiciously break from RAW to provide a more satisfying scenario for my players. Your insights are appreciated. B-) I was thinking healing potions could offset exhaustion. Not RAW, but seems plausible. Well, the function of a potion of vitality (which may appear in our adventure) is removing all levels of exhaustion (in addition to diseases/poison) – and that's a very rare potion compared to the common potions of healing the party can craft. I guess I'm concerned at the precedent that house rule would set – because once I implement, say, a potion of healing can be used to remove 1 exhaustion level instead of restoring 2d4+2 hp, then there's no going back. Then a potion of healing could function like a missed meal, a missed night of sleep, or any number of things which involve exhaustion. I'm unsure how that would effect the rest of the game. I'd actually appreciate if you have insights into the big picture implicati...

Rather than a single item, or an item that can only be used by one play, what about a scroll or item that gives everyone a buff? Maybe resistance against dragon breath or temp hit points, or... Sounds good, I will see how powerful they are by the time they get to that point. They are currently searching for king hekaton to garner Allance, with giants against tiamat.
  • 08:00 AM - Quickleaf quoted LordEntrails in post Forced March question
One resource the party could (maybe) expend would be healing potions. But not a big fan of that. Hmm, my party does have 2 PCs with herbalism kit proficiency and they've been stocking up a small batch of potions of healing. Not sure how to justify healing potion expenditure affecting a skill challenge though. Anyway, I would tend to eliminate the Forced March as separate from the skill challenge. Then have degrees of success with the challenge that the party could spend exhaustion levels to overcome parts of the challenge, or to offset failed parts of the challenge. "You failed to navigate the river and took the wrong branch, you can spend an exhaustion level to get back on track." Also, I like accommodating warning the village, I would also allow for if the party surpasses or excels at the skill challenge that maybe they get their with 30 or 60 minutes before the enemy. Allowing them to be familiar with the layout, or get the villagers to hide, or maybe even setup a very hasty ambush....

I doubt that. I doubt this conversation would ever happen;I was talking in terms of WotC's practice of looking at the content of DMs Guild to add to the Guild Adept program. Likewise for Adventurer's League content. There are plenty of "do this/don't do that" posts and tweets that tell creatives what mistakes not to make and what things to look out for in terms of common errors. Not following the Realms Style Guide is right up there.

Just to clarify, I don't recommend (or do myself) for DMs to ALWAYS mess with horse (or mules). I do recommend that DMs be aware of some of the ways in which they can use mounts (or hirelings/retainers/etc) to spice up of boring parts of the story or even add interesting parts to the plot. It's just another tool for the DM. As with any tool, it should be used for fun, however the table defines that. Fair enough. Most y’all like that I hear is from DMs that delight in doing stuff like that frequently, brag about their players not trusting anyone or anything, and still somehow have players.
