No. Would you give another character 2 bonus actions per turn just because they have access to more than 1?

You've never seen a gnome paladin? Or a halfling barbarian? Or a dwarf wizard? Boy, you must not be around very creative players! Oh, and I suspect you meant "characters" when you said players, I don't think we are allowed to discuss player's racial tendencies :)

When it comes to world building the DM RULES. The DM does not have to give a great reason why a race is banned. Just say it is banned. Then the whiners will whine either “BUT BUT BUT it is an official race in an official book. “ Or “You are a rotten DM, I can’t player my character if you ban X race. Whimper Whine.” In my homebrew gnomes have cornered the market on gems. All gnomes are suspect...

I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. It's true to the times, and...

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

Have you been between San Diego and San Fran? There's not much empty space out there except Camp Pendelton north of San Diego. And it's not exactly like New England is a megacity sprawl. Reminds me of a story when I was staying with my Grandmother as a teenager. We were going to be driving from upstate New York (Balston Spa) to Vermont (Bennington) and she was adamant that we make sure to take...

I said Other, and only Other. Here's why I didn't/wouldn't pick the others. - Monsters, their are so many out there that are good quality and free, why pay for more? i.e. 1d6 Adventures/Monster a Day has something like 400+ already that I've never had time to go through. - Magic Items, maybe. Because I haven't yet come across any strong collections. But I'd be looking for a large set, not a...

Also as an outside observer I've wondered the same as the OP. One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? I mean it has seemed like for a long time PF just kept publishing more options, more adventures, more content; and that was their model. Did they simply run out of topics/content or...

I don't envision a single arrow to the chest to always be able kill an orc. Even with they don't see the attack coming. So standard combat rules work just fine. Besides, the orc isn't defenseless, he's just unaware of the threat. Maybe I would allow automatic critical damage, but advantage is probably just fine.

Help yourself out by being less specific in your prep. With some experience, and change in expectations, you can get down to a hour of less prep for a full gaming session. It's about improvisation and having...

  • 01:21 AM - pukunui mentioned LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
LordEntrails: Using software to automate the process would certainly make alternative initiative methods more appealing. Unfortunately for me, I don't use any software when I run my games, so we'd be stuck with stopping the combat at the end of each round, having everyone reroll, having me shuffle the initiative tents I hang on my DM screen around to reflect the new order, then commencing with the next round of combat.

  • 12:52 PM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! I believe that is why LordEntrails suggested the dungeons be clear when the PCs get there. Leave signs they have fled or retreated and that they know the PCs are coming for them. Make it clear the cult is break up based on the success of the PCs. They should make them fell good and move the story along to where the cultist are making the final stand. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal... "Could be lethal" are the most exciting challenges to overcome and the ones the players might talked about for years later.
  • 01:56 AM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good against Imix. Ok, with 5 PCs I think you should probably be just fine against Imix (he is only CR 19) if the group is prepared. Ogremoch might be a bit tougher. However, you know your group the best. I would take @LordEntrails suggestion and then don't change anything with the Princes themselves.

  • 09:02 PM - Satyrn mentioned LordEntrails in post Miles per day on horseback: how many?
A less severe alternative might be that the horse could not be ridden for the rest of this day and the next. Presumably, speed is currently of value to the party, so that would still be a meaningful penalty. That's definitely more reasonable than what I'd do. I just don't like horses. Though that was before reading LordEntrails' post. Now I love horses.

  • 08:26 AM - Enevhar Aldarion mentioned LordEntrails in post Anyone else find this really irritating?
LordEntrails Elfcrusher I sort of lost track in this thread who was arguing which side of this, but basically it is legal for the owner of the product to make a backup or an alternate format of the product. That means you, personally, have to make it for it to be legal. As soon as anyone does this and then shares it with other people, even for free, then copyright laws, etc are being violated. You also need to keep ownership of the original for your copies to stay legal. For example, you can't just buy a DVD or CD or something, make a copy of it, and then sell or give away the original without making your copy illegal to own, in the US at least.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

  • 03:09 PM - canucksaram mentioned LordEntrails in post More details
@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

  • 05:05 AM - Maxperson quoted LordEntrails in post Death and 0 Max HP
Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Coma isn't a condition, so I would think it would be death. They still meet all the necessary conditions to die. Drained to 0 max hit points by the bite. Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max. I can see that and I wouldn't argue such a ruling in a game. I'm just not sure if I would go that way or not as DM. I definitely would not allow temporary hit points to work. They specify that they don't stop unconsciousness or stabilize you, and that latter portion would keep me from allowing it to keep the PC alive. The max hit points from Aid are different, though, and I might allow that.

  • 08:49 PM - Umbran quoted LordEntrails in post Library of Congress makes D&D accessible in audio format
That's cool. I'm curious, is it distributed freely? To quote the article: "NLS is a free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page. Through a national network of cooperating libraries, NLS offers books the way you want them: in braille or audio, mailed to your door for free or instantly downloadable. NLS works to ensure that all may read by providing eligible patrons access to reading material regardless of age, economic circumstances, or technical expertise. Share the gift of reading, and spread the word about NLS so that all may read." So, it is free, if you can show that you have a relevant disability.

They duplicate existing rules, and provide a nice box with all the trinkets that are fun to play with. I hope they continue along those lines. Well, the intent was a theoretical discussion of what if we didn't have the hardcovers and the game was only available through the boxes. How would that change things? Would it change things? I like the idea of an Explorer's box. It could include the rules for gnomes, rangers and druids. Include a nice hex crawl map and include the sections of the DMG for such exploration. And of course include a bunch of beasts from the MM and other sources. Maybe it might even include a remake of Expedition to Barrier Peaks... A Seafarer's box could include a map of the MoonSea, and punch out cardboard 3D ship. Include any rules expansions from Saltmarsh (haven't looked at it yet, but people talk about ship rules). Don't know what races and classes you would include, ...

But, using them as a means to expand upon the rules is a *bad* thing. I do note that they have effectively done that with sidekicks, and I'm not sure how that is going to work into the mainstream. Using SKs as an example, I'm not a person who will probably ever buy Essentials for myself, so how do I incorporate or get the SK rules to use? Other new rules will just make that problem even worse. They have a strong model now with the large AP books that add new and appropriate rules people know where to go to get the new rules. And their is very little rules (or content) overlap. I actually think the boxed sets having new rules is something that on a case-by-case basis is fine - so long as the reason for it makes sense for the target audience. I also think duplicating those rules in another book - if it's appropriate - is also fine. The sidekick rules, for example, fill a need that is really common among folks who are trying to learn the game, which is that it's often easy to get one other ...

An advanced or expert boxed set? Other than expanded rules, what much such look like? Something more than just an adventure and a new DM screen. Maybe a campaign setting or including poster battlemaps? So everyone, what would you put in a follow on box set? I was picturing fleshing out the character classes presented in Essentials Kit to 12 15 or 20 in the same, simple manner. Additional spells to the fleshed out level, more magic items, Another Adventure, and another screen with different, pertinent information that could be 'added' to the first one to make an a massive 8 panel screen. I think their is a market for a simple version of 5th edition. It can be the exact same information, just presented in a different manner to ease learning. I think the Essentials Kit is going to be a MASSIVE hit.

I like @Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance. Thank you - and you are quite correct, they know the mechanics beforehand. More importantly, I always ask the new table when I GM at gameshops if they would enjoy the rule. I've also set it to 2 minutes before when introducing new players, and slowly worked down the time limit. I've had a considerable number of people thank me for improving their turn speed, and helping them focus on the strategy of watching other peoples' turns and calculating their own in response.

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll.This. Find out what motivates your players and use it to make the game faster/better/more fun.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. On paper, a relevant point. In practice, seldom relevant.

So something like; "We've created products for all the good ideas we have, so we are going to change the rules just enough that we can re-use all out ideas and just convert them to the new rules." Yea, that will go over well. That is literally the reason for every new edition of an existing game ever. The skill is always how to sell the new edition while drawing the attention well away from this fact.

Imagine trying to get into Pathfinder in 2019. Where would you even start? I hope they do pull this off. Having a stronger competition for 5e only means that both games get better. Well, the Beginner's Box maybe? But to address the second sentence, I don't think Pathfinder could possibly be anything resembling "strong" competition for D&D. It was to 4E, but that's a different story. My sense is that Pathfinder serves those wanting a crunchier game, and also loyalists - which is, of course, a Venn diagram. Part of the impetus behind starting this thread is that P2 seems to threaten both groups. So something like; "We've created products for all the good ideas we have, so we are going to change the rules just enough that we can re-use all out ideas and just convert them to the new rules." Yea, that will go over well. I would be very surprised if they take the latter-day TSR/early WotC approach of edition cycling and product treadmill re-hashing. Maybe we'll see one or two of the same, but be...

I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate, codify, and unify a lot of the accumulated game rules and player options" into something cohesive that does not add anything new, that also will not be well received. By now, I suspect most tables running PF have already worked out how to integrate and resolve all of the conflicts due to the 2 decades worth of prolific content. IMO, if they don't bring something unique and new (mechanic, setting, etc) to the table, it will not be well received.IMHO, it's both here. As I pointed out earlier, the implementation of archetypes in PF2 is meant to "integrate, codify, and unify" three different subsystems that performed similar functions in PF1: multiclassing, archetypes, and prestige classes. I don't think that there was so much a desire to "make something new" here as it was about streamlining the core system chassis so that they could build off the system easier. It's new, but only as a coincidental byproduct of its design goal. But it...

Yea, that will go over well.I don't think that represents well what Paizo is doing or their motives at all. I think that they wanted to integrate, codify, and unify a lot of the accumulated game rules and player options (essentially TWO DECADES WORTH) while streamlining and fixing some of the core weak spots of the 3.X engine while still supporting the sort of stories people could make with PF1.

One other aspect that is implied in this discussion but not stated, Is it known that PF1 is no longer sustainable? Was their an evolve or die mandate? Pathfinder 1 had a very aggressive publishing schedule. They put a ton of products out for it in a relatively short amount of time. I think the problem they have is they've saturated the Pathfinder 1 system. There isn't a ton of obvious things to do. So I don't think they're in so much of an evolve or die situation as needing to reboot.

Sounds to me like a minor evolution in RPG products might be starting. I can envision a new series of adventure box sets and box set expansions for Target and retail chains. Where most are stand alone, but perhaps something like the old expert box set. Then you have the no frills content dense core rulebooks/APs that we have today and that you expect your FLGS to support. Compatible, but different markets. Not sure exactly what such would look like, but sounds interesting to me. Shrugs, I like the FLGS environment but I don't know if I like the FLGS business model. At least not the traditional one. I see FLGS always being a niche market, and not only unable to, but not targets for the depth and breadth of the current and foreseeable D&D market. To me, I see the FLGS model as always being something of a club house, and D&D seems to be growing beyond anything a club house model could fully support (even if Amazon/Target we're not in the picture). An advanced or expert boxed set? Other than ...

Yea, I tried adding them but then got caught up with multiple images in the post and deleted the wrong ones... Give me a minute and I will correct the post. Yeah that wasn't really necessary. I was just trying to show off my entirely pointless knowledge. I'm Canadian, but somehow recognize the shape of New England states.:erm:

You New Englander's, so titled or not!, crack me up. One of your states is like the size of a single county out west. Just for fun I used www.thetruesize.com to put all six of your "states" into California. Lots of room left over. You left out 2 New England states. Connecticut and Rhode Island are huge. I'm sure they'd fill in the gaps.
