I have to laugh at MarkB’s comment. I had more bad players crack a MM open at home than those who opened a MM in Public. Of course some of bad players were only in the house because they were snuggle partners with my regular good players. In the past I placed Monster Manuals in the game. Find the right monster tome and you could crack open the MM during combat. Now days after learning to just...

No. It is not odd. Unless you have an ability you should not be opening the MM during the game. NOT COOL. As to the gamestore owner getting involved. I think "Young Fella" open the book, was told to put away, and told the DM to take a hike. So the DM send him to the mommy for a spanking.

Why yes it can. In the hands of an actor who knows his contract is for two years. It looks silly. But it must be super uber because Wolf um Worg, the knobbing headed guy who couldn't handle his mall cop job on the Enterprise has one. I seen a lot of silly weapons from tv and movies turn billy bad Beep because they looked cool and the fans wanted them to be the bestest weapon in the game.

It just seems to me that stating "international" or that they are taking the game "worldwide" is like saying "I put gas in my car" (or charge the batteries). Of course they are. The only other option is to limit their own profits and profitability. Not that they have maximized their market penetration within the USA, but there is nothing inherent about D&D that is localized to one place. Hence...

When it comes to lethality to characters their are several factors. One of them are default rules. Another is optional rules. Then of course you have house/table rules. You also have attitude/personality of the DM and players. With the DM obviously (?) dominating the tone. So let's break that down to a few factors/abbreviations; - RAW - Other Rules - People It seems blatantly obvious to...

I wasn't suggesting comma was a RAW "condition", rather a natural language idea that exists in the real world and could be used as an analog in game :) We do know that a character can be unconscious at 0 HP (or dead), and that is what I was implying. That a character could be unconscious, at 0 HP and effectively in a comma since they could not normally gain HP to become conscious. I don't...

Or would they just be in a comma? i.e. unconscious and unable to become conscious because they can't get (normal) hit points? Hence why I might rule Raise Dead followed by Aid or other temporary hit points would get the character conscious, then either a long rest (if the tempo HP last that long) or Greater Restoration so that they can then take a long rest and regain their hit point max.

Seems like the character needs a blood donation! (After all, that to me is what the reduced HP max of a vamp is, a blood drain.) I like S'mon 's idea. Sounds like fun to me :) *EG* To me, Raise Dead alone would not be sufficient, after all, the character only would have 0HP. Maybe they would be alive but in a coma until some means is found to raise their HP max. Does that imply RD is needed...

Eh. The portrayal of D&D as something you stop playing when girls showed up was true to the time period. And the gifting of the D&D books to the younger sister at the end was a positive. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. I think most people are smart enough to realize that much of ST is a period piece. Just like all the smoking is so frequent on the series. Not what I took away from the previous discussion at all :) Sure, it could be done. But I don't think its better than the widely accepted model of a players guide and a game masters guide and then expansion sources format.

One of the things I think they need to keep separate is making sure the box sets fill a different niche than the books do. Otherwise they threaten to fracture their market/customer-base. ("We play using the box sets." vs. "Oh, we use the real books.") To me, the books are the detailed sources; dense, compressed content, be that the PHB, MM, or an AP. Box sets are more of a 'getting start with'...

Robus swap out the placement of orc and ranger. Does sound fair if the orc is firing an arrow at your ranger for an instant kill? So as some have said by rules, advantage, surprise round etc. BUT if the orc does not matter to the adventure I may MAY give you an instant kill. But instant kills will be rare, or you have lots damage output per hit.

Except go ask someone in marketing or advertizing, customers are notorious for not knowing what they will actually spend their own money on. Sure yea, you have to engage your customer base and make them feel loved, but you have to give them what they want (and will spend money on), not want they ask for.

I like Xaelvaen's method too, as long as the players know they are getting rewarded. imo, by having them add the advantage, they know they are getting it. Sure, a few will add it when they shouldn't, but some will forget too. And though +1 is noticeable, it won't really impact game balance.

My point, poorly presented, is that if the community feels like the reason PF2 is being created is because Paizo has run out of ideas and that in order to remain relevant and profitable they must change the rule system so that they can re-hash/present all the ideas they have already presented, it will not be well received. I also do not think that if the purpose of PF2 is to "integrate,...

A technique I learned at a con, tell your players that when their turn comes around if they have already rolled their dice and can tell you something like "I attack the third goblin with my sword, attack total of 16 for 8 slashing damage" then they automatically get to add +1 to their attack roll. This way they are ready to go, and they get a bonus for being ready.

  • 03:16 AM - Irennan mentioned LordEntrails in post New D&D product listed on Amazon
LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

  • 05:53 PM - lowkey13 quoted LordEntrails in post Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition
(My search fu both in the books and online is very weak today) RAW: Ranged magic weapons, do they add their magic bonus to both the attack and damage roles? Magic ammunition, do they? Do they stack with magic weapons? FYI, and in addition to the other answers- "Bonuses stack, unless a feature or item tells you otherwise. And remember that magic ammunition loses its magic when it hits." JC tweeted that, so ... (Which is why you shouldn't give out both IMO).
  • 05:48 PM - Satyrn quoted LordEntrails in post Magic Ranged Weapons and Magic Ammunition
I think RAW says that ammo that hits is destroyed, and ammo that misses their is a chance to collect undamaged. I'll keep looking. Maybe sage advice has something... Yeah, my DMG says "once it hits a target the ammunition is no longer magical."

  • 07:04 PM - Stalker0 quoted LordEntrails in post Crafting Items - Expert Craftsman vs Adventurers
I like that in 5E a 6th level character can still do/accomplish most of what a 16th level character can and that their is not a wide discrepancy between them. I would be okay if the rest of system supports this, but I find that it doesn't. In terms of skills, a 6th level and 20th level character are close. Yet the 20th level character is tremendously more durable. Further, the abilities of 20th level characters are very powerful. But nothing more so than with magic....as you get to the point where reality alteration becomes a norm. So you have a disconnect where in some ways 20th level characters are leagues above a 6th....but in skills they are not.

  • 10:15 PM - the Jester quoted LordEntrails in post Recovering Unused Held Spells
I didn't have a problem with RAW, or your proposal, and was just about to go to another thread when the thought hit me; why are spell casters penalized more than martials with a readied action? It not like an archer loses his arrow, why should a caster lose their spell energy? They do lose their attack, though, and merely readying in the first place loses you any extra attacks. Using a readied action also precludes using an opportunity attack. So there's definitely an opportunity cost there.
  • 08:37 PM - TwoSix quoted LordEntrails in post "straight" rolls in D&D
Lots of good ideas, but what comes to my mind are these comments; - I think the effects should be a gradual process, requiring more than one roll with escalating consequences I would agree with this in the general case, but in this specific case (the characters are already level 16, and probably only have a handful of sessions left before the game ends), I think an all-or-nothing approach might be better.

  • 07:16 PM - Satyrn quoted LordEntrails in post I have an issue with swarms
Eh, I don't know about immune to forced movement. To me, that's a ruling because it depends up on the source of the movement. Shove? Nope, won't work. Thunderwave? Yes, that moves a swarm. That rule does account for source. In 4e, the forced movement from melee and ranged attacks are weapon attacks. Thunderwave is an area effect.

  • 07:58 PM - robus quoted LordEntrails in post I have an issue with swarms
I got that, but why? The max damage is the same, you've just increased the odds of at least one hit, but you have doubles the number of attack rolls. Is that increased average DPR worth the effort? Well it's not much of an effort, more to get a more dramatic effect from encountering a swarm.
  • 07:11 PM - robus quoted LordEntrails in post I have an issue with swarms
The damage output of a swarm already varies based on if they half more or less than half HP. So adding multiattack just exaggerates this. All you have done is half the damage but double the number of attacks, which is most cases comes out the same. Is that worth it? I just changed the logic a little is all. I used the lower damage output from the original but gave it two chances to hit.

  • 08:31 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted LordEntrails in post [5E] Apparatus of Kwalish
Absolutely willing to houserule :) But what would that device look like? Say it could fit 2 characters and both of those would operate the controls. Would the they only be able to attack once per round? Could if both players chose to control it to move would that be a double move? If both wanted to make it turn, would it make a double turn? I would keep it simple if you expected it to be used regularly. If you specifically want it to be two person have one control movement (pilot) and the other weapons (gunner) (and lights etc). Don't specify "levers", players won't want to use it if it's too fiddly. Don't restrict it's ability to turn, the person on movement can, as an action, move the exoskeleton up to it's maximum speed and turn. If they have an extra action they can move twice. The person on weapons can activate the primary weapon as an action and the secondary weapon as a bonus action. If any skill checks are needed (e.g. traversing a narrow ledge) use Vehicle (Land/Water as most applicabl...

  • 07:35 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted LordEntrails in post [5E] Apparatus of Kwalish
. If needed, consider it my version of the device, or a one-off, or something completely new if you need to in order to consider other possibilities. I believe that was my initial suggestion. The point of the Apparatus of Kwalish is to use it to overcome a specific environmental challenge: "Oh no, the treasure chamber is filled with poison gas, how ever are we going to get the McGuffin of Plott? Maybe that weird barrel-like thing we found earlier in the dungeon could be of some use?" After that it usually sits back at HQ or at the bottom of a bag of holding until the next environmental hazard. Sustained interest is not required. It's too big and bulky to be part of regular kit. If you want something that is going to be used frequently, you should give the players the Armoured Exoskeleton of Kwalish instead.

  • 07:53 AM - Paul Farquhar quoted LordEntrails in post [5E] Apparatus of Kwalish
Thanks Paul, I do appreciate your thoughts, but they aren't helping me much. I don't want a fighting machine, but even a "commoner" NPC has clear rules for combat, if the players decide to fight one etc. Anyone have thoughts on A or B? Or other thoughts? It's rules are pretty clear if you assume each leaver can only be used once in a round. One person controls movement, the other controls the claws. Yes, it is possible for someone to stay out of reach of it's claws by moving around behind it. This is intended. The party really isn't going to want to take the miniature submarine into battle unless they have no choice. In which case they are going to have to find a way to compensate for it's lack of manoeuvrability. That is what makes for an interesting combat encounter. Spoiler for The Lost Laboratory of Kwalish: In this adventure the party will come across a six-person Apparatus (i.e. large enough to carry the whole party) which they will need to use to overcome a specific obstacle. Cl...

That would be a bad business decision. Oh the fortunes that have been made on ideas that others said would never work. I would agree that idea has some complexities, but to make a sweeping “that would be a bad business decision” based on one paragraph sentence, without considering the countless ways it could be implemented, seems a bit...hasty.

  • 05:08 PM - Manbearcat quoted LordEntrails in post To boxed text or not to boxed text
This is a great story. And has almost nothing to do with boxed text or pre-written narration. It has very little to do with the discussion even though it is about a new GM. It has nothing to do with the OP because its not about a pre-written adventure etc so how can it add value to the discussion of boxed text? All it does is support the premise that many have made that different people learn and play in different ways. I was responding to the particular point that you made in your post. I thought it was an interesting point, I have different thoughts on that particular cultural/TTRPGing value than you do, so I figured I'd contribute those thoughts.
  • 05:25 AM - Manbearcat quoted LordEntrails in post To boxed text or not to boxed text
Maybe. If you have someone to teach you. <snip> They need the game to be accessible. Sandboxing, spontaneous creation or whatever you want to call it take more. More time, more skill, more effort, more interest. Not everyone wants to spend that amount of x. That's not my experience. Someone recently posted an anecdote on these boards,of GMing two children: the older says to the younger "You scout ahead" and then, when the younger acquiesces, asks "So what do you see?" The younger replies by making up an account of what his/her PC sees - s/he didn't wait for the GM to say it! XP was awarded for this post. • 12:49 AM - Mike Myler quoted LordEntrails in post Mythological Figures: Genghis Khan (5E)
Why 20 levels? And why restrict yourself to PC classes anyways? All the Mythological Figures are built RAW so if, say, you're doing a one shot game and needed a quick PC badaboom we've got you covered. Anyone of sufficient importance/need is 20th level (Odysseus, John Henry) and rarely if every above that (Merlin screeched in at 23rd or 24th level I think).

  • 10:34 PM - Manbearcat quoted LordEntrails in post To boxed text or not to boxed text
Railroading and plot development are not on the list of concerns of first (second or third) time DM's. This may be true, but it shouldn't be. Internalizing the deployment of metaplot or play trajectory (if in a confined site like a dungeon) via player-subordinating-Force (either because you learned under a GM who deployed it or because you read a module/ruleset that supports, or seems to, it) as a/the means for a game to achieve forward momentum is something that is not easy to unlearn. Its many times easier to learn the principles of "Hold on Lightly" and "Play to Find Out What Happens" while learning the techniques that facilitate this right from the get-go. Then, later, if you have players that want a passive experience of metaplot/setting-tourism down the line (where they aren't responsible for dynamic plot trajectory, but just mild choices with muted results in subtly branching, predetermined paths), that is easy enough to do. Further, through the above experience, you'll more eas...

We are releasing four Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (2E) products today for Fantasy Grounds, starting with the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master Guide. Additional products are in the works. We are excited to see how fans of the older material react to having those mixed with virtual tabletop software. Our software will now support a 2E ruleset as a built-in ruleset. Purchasable modules will pre-load content and graphics from popular books and modules. 105924105925105926105927105928

I think theoretical debates by people with 20-40 years+ gaming experience regarding fictional content and narration is great and all, but it helps to remember that not everyone has that. Boxed text is wonderful for beginning DMs Again, I think the people on this forum (which skews much older than the average TTRPGer) tend to forget how difficult it is to start with. Not every person with 30+ years of experience can do without it, and it certainly helps newbie DMs.I was once a beginning GM. The adventures I ran (most of which I also wrote) didn't have boxed text. For an adventure targeted at a market other than experienced DMs, it is essential. It is key to training new DMs on what to describer to the players and not describe to the players. But, it should never be the only place critical information is presented. It may be essential from a market point of view. I don't think it's key to training. More GMs were trained by Moldvay Basic than just about any other edition, and that was not a...
