Surina blinks at Drake's harsh response. Obviously there is a story there. She considers mentioning that Drake just made her point for her, but decides not to. He's obviously in no mood for logic. She nods at Perrin's suggestion. Knowing her armor to be hard to keep silent she hangs back, letting those better at stalking take the lead. Surina Stealth at Disadv due to armor:...

I’ve been running TOA for some time now as a “drop-in” game at my local library. While new characters/players are always welcome, I have a group of regulars, except that they aren’t all always able to be there on a given week; so the party composition varies. We have generally dealt with this narrative thanks to a fey dog named Pondie (from one of the SKT AL modules we ran before starting TOA)...

Surina keeps pace with Swithun, and chats with him quietly during the day, asking about his weapons training, his people, and if they make wine or other fermented drinks. If they do, she will ask about them out of (former) professional curiosity. She is trying to distract herself from the horrors of the camp and from her own anger, and to get to know her traveling companions better. Surina...

Lots of good suggestions here. A few more ideas/tips: -for newbies, consider color-coding the character sheets. For a recent introductory game at our local high school, I got highlighters and ran a yellow line down the skills box, highlighted the AC in purple, etc. Then when I asked for info, I could tell them what color to look for on their sheet. (NOTE: this doesn't work for colorblind...

If the Black Road is played in sequence as part of AL Season 5, and the characters involved have played the previous adventures, they are starting out at the ending point. They have been helping out in a small town (whose name escapes me at the moment) and now are tasked with accompanying an important shipment leaving from the Oasis and headed back to this same town. Thus to get to the...

Everett is aware that they are necromantic in nature. But what they do is totally unknown. One of the villagers approaches him and says they found some weird books in the main tent. They were afraid to touch them. What are Surina and Valdral doing? ArwensDaughter eayres33 If there are no other concerns, I'm going to advance the time.

So most of a week went by without a post. What's up? The current boss only has 1 hp left. Once he's down I'll probably handwave the two zombies so we can get to the next story beat. And have some RP with the townsfolk. And eventually take a long rest. • 10:47 PM - Blue mentioned ArwensDaughter in post Looking for the best/cheapest tools to build out a character with the most possible source material
Wizards doesn't license any of the material for free except the SRD. (They also make the Basic rules free themselves, which is not a 1:1 overlap of the SRD.) So it comes down to the smallest fee. If you know what you want, ArwensDaughter pointed out you can buy just that race/class/etc from D&D Beyond. If you want to browse everything .... hmm. Fantasy Grounds does an Ultimate subscription (which I assume includes everything) for $9.99 a month. So you could sign up for a month, play around, and do up you character at each level and print them out. You'd have to manually change the to reflect items and such, but that you should get from your DM.
  • 03:05 PM - Oofta mentioned ArwensDaughter in post Looking for the best/cheapest tools to build out a character with the most possible source material
Well, the cheapest is pretty difficult. Read the books, get a pencil and paper and write it down. For the absolute lowest cost you could use the free pdf. Or basically, what ArwensDaughter said. I created a spreadsheet to track my stuff because I'm lazy and I didn't want to screw up the math but it's really not particularly necessary. This version is a lot simpler to track characters. I play (and DM) enough to justify DndInsider, but I don't even use it to track my characters other than to double check myself now and then.

EarlyBird Thateous TallIan ArwensDaughter Zadolix I have to say, I didn't expect everyone to survive so long. (Mostly I expected you not to go to the inn the first night. But that's decision point is long since passed.) But the battle for the inn is almost finished. This is just a convenient time to do this: I'm doing something unorthodox. I'm having you level up in the middle of the fight. So everyone is now level 2 and there are still wolves incoming. I'll resume the IC in a few days once everyone has leveled up. Spellcasters gain an unused 1st level spell slot but if your class has to prepare a list of spell for the day, that list remains unchanged until you long rest. (sorry wizards, clerics and druids). Hit points: Take half the die for your class + 1. And you get those HP immediately.

ArwensDaughter: No worries! And yes, the reinforcements during an alarm thing is a bit odd. I think what you proposed earlier works fine: just start keeping track of time from the moment the PCs arrive and have "reinforcements" show up as random encounters regardless of whether the alarm has been sounded or not.

There is a global search function, and once the search is run, you can filter to show only compendium results. If you are working on an iPad, the search field may not show up in landscape mode. It should in portrait mode. This is an apparent bug that was reported a while back. I just reported it again. I would expect it to be fixed soon. I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhmd.jpg See the staples? http://i.imgur.com/FLWk...

  • 01:22 AM - Rhenny mentioned ArwensDaughter in post I may have taken on a bigger challenge than i thought I did
I like what ArwensDaughter and Tony Vargas said. Flow charts and outlines really help me, especially because they allow me to as Tony said, "prep less and improvise more." I generally create an outline of possibilities, and then see where the players go. Each session, I reconfigure an outline of possibilities. Included in the outline (or on separate paper/index cards), I have a few contingencies too in case I need to pull something out of thin air.

Looking at Drake she adds "After all, if a dragon attacked a town you and I were in, would it be just or right for the townsfolk to attack you--or me--because we too have dragon blood? If they claimed 'our kind' had declared war against the town would they be right?" Drake’s eyes smoldered. “They’ve tried. They’ve failed.”

The UA article is much more detailed/in depth.

  • 02:49 AM - GlassJaw quoted ArwensDaughter in post running DDAL5 as a home campaign; also, getting players to a desert oasis
You have identified the big, gaping plot hole in The Black Road—one I have rarely seen mentioned when the Black Road is discussed. The desert is dangerous to cross, the trip from the oasis to the goal point is supposed to introduce them to the challenges of traveling in the desert, and yet somehow they got through the desert to get to the Oasis in the first place. Exactly. It's the first thing I noticed. None of the provided hooks actually involve getting to the oasis. My solution likely won’t work for you. But Eltab’s suggestion sounds like a good one. Remember that there are also guidelines for adjusting the adventure for lower/higher level parties in the Black Road. So even if the party is “only” level 2 when they reach the Oasis, the adventure should be workable. Hmm, true. I like Sunless Citadel but it would be commitment to run and certainly delay starting The Black Road.

Both a draconic sorcerer and divine soul would provide some interesting roleplay with Surina (Dragonborn LG Devotional Paladin). She's likely to feel both a kinship with a draconic sorcerer and some conflict over a human with draconic connections. With divine soul, she'd be drawn to the divine connection: maybe even a bid envious of it, depending? Connection to the divine is very important to Surina, but she still tends to think in either/or absolutist categories. She can be a bit judgmental about those situations and persons that don't fit her neat little categories. Everett, for example, really annoyed her early on, as she is suspicious of noble types anyway, and he didn't seem to take anything very seriously. In all honesty, I'm kind of hit or miss with RP; it's my weakest aspect as a player. But I've been trying to stretch myself with Surina when I have the mental energy to do so. Then there's the fact that the PCs that Surina has had the easiest time interacting with (Keth and Za...

I would agree that the screen size of phones—and thus the different UI—is not particularly efficient or helpful at the table. Although I’m not sure it’s that much slower than rifling through a book looking for info. But the experience on a tablet and a laptop are quite different. I had a player use her laptop to access her character sheet, and she was quick and efficient. I love having my iPad up as I DM. None of that’s to say you should use it or you should think it’s great stuff. If it doesn’t serve your needs at a price point that works for you, then it’s not worth it for you, and that’s ok. A proper responsive app/site would be lovely, but it's more of a nice to have for me.

  • 08:53 PM - Quickleaf quoted ArwensDaughter in post [SPOILERS] Enhancing Tomb of Annihilation
So in the Fane of the Night Serpent chapter, under the section labeled "Audience with Fenzatha," it says But there is not direction on how to determine who is successful; the PCs are supposed to "sow confusion," not be part of the abush of Ras Nsi, so it's not a head to head fight, it's something that happens "off stage." I know I could just decide, or roll 2 d20s, but I'm interested in what other people did/planned to do in this scenario. Not there yet, but my notes are that Fenthaza would attempt to reveal Sekelok’s betrayal, implicating him and his lover Neema (one of Ras Nsi’s concubines) as being behind a slave revolt. With Sekelok executed and Ras Nsi’s suspicions alerted, that gives Fenthaza’s forces (Areas 5,6,7) a roughly equal chance against Ras Nsi’s forces (Area 11) if they act swiftly before Ras Nsi can call reinforcements. In other words, XP totals are 6,400 for Fenthaza’s vs 6,450 for Ras Nsi’s. Personally, I imagine Fenthaza following up Sekelok’s execution with Invoke ...
  • 07:31 PM - Quickleaf quoted ArwensDaughter in post Troubleshooting slow narrative? (ToA, spoilers)
Love your posts as usual Quickleaf. May take might not work for your game, but for ToA it is, provided how big the world around the PCs is, to make things happen that would effect the PCs and give them more opportunities and subtly guide them towards the clues. For example, if after 10 sessions and, I guess a few weeks of in game time, you party has accomplished anything of note and has some jungle credit, Stormfang might seek them out proactively to help her with her problem with the whattheirnames of Firefinger. If they tell her of their quest and ask her the right questions and help her, she can lead them to Saja N’baza. Obviously, for this to work if the PCs have done something she would and that reasonably incentivise her to approach them proactively. But I hope you get the idea, with a truckload of NPCs in the adventure, at some point PCs are bound to do somethimng that will cause someone to act in a way that effects the PCs. They can be approached for help, threatened, attacked, there...

  • 07:12 PM - Quickleaf quoted ArwensDaughter in post Troubleshooting slow narrative? (ToA, spoilers)
That's an issue with open world adventures. If' I ever run ToA I will probably skip the opening chapters and go straight to the meat, without the hexploration. I don't think it's a sin to lead the players by the nose and drop a map to Omu in thier path if they aren't enjoying the wandering. If they want to get to the meat of the story, why not oblige them? Simply handwave it and bump the PCs the requisite number of levels and they can head to Omu. Hand-waving / rail-roaring is certainly a possible measure of last resort. Don’t think I’m quite in that desperate of a situation yet. There are other players in the group who would likely react negatively to such a last resort move also. The problem is, the (apparent) urgency of the Death Curse hook conflicts with the theme of exploring a new continent. So, if you want to do an open world exploration it's better to drop the Death Curse (or have it start much later); or, if you want to focus on the Death Curse, skip ahead to near the end. What...

Sweet! I presume Con bonuses also apply to HP? Also, Surina gains spellcasting at level 2 but has no spells already prepared. I presume that means she has no spells prepared? I'm cool with that, since she can use spell slots for Divine Smite, but I thought I'd clarify. Yes, +CON Mod. Yes, she has no prepared spells. Just the open slots. Warning, the wolves probably aren't evil. :) I'm lookin ginto doing the same thing in a few of my games. Kind of like the level up from a video game or what not. The PbP format is so slow, anything that can make it seem video gamy can't be bad. :)

  • 12:37 AM - Mercule quoted ArwensDaughter in post Revised Ranger update
Because the revision is not published in the sense of being official; the revision is UA. UA which has, in WOTC's estimation, been archived. It can certainly be used in home games (and I probably would at my table), but it's not AL legal. Personally I'm not too flustered about it because I can always use the revision, or some adaptation of it. (I've toyed with giving Beastmasters beast sense x times per rest, but only with their companion, for example) AL's not an issue for me as there aren't any AL games anywhere close. But I do understand the frustration with Beastmaster being officially revised. Really, I don't give a rip about the beastmaster -- the pet should go with the druid, not the ranger, IMO. I like the Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy abilities better. The only reason I want something official (or, at least, another UA) is because the revised ranger hunter is the only PC that can't be built using DDB because they aren't opening up home brew base classes and WotC has "archived"...

Surina will gladly take a watch; she's not picky about which one. I'm thinking, though, she'd be most useful on watch if she stays downstairs; she doesn't have great ranged attack options--she'd be more helpful making sure nothing gets through the doors on the ground floor. Is that a possibility? There are people staying awake downstairs. To watch the doors and to help wake everyone if there are shouts from elsewhere in the inn.

Quickleaf, I hope when you have completed your prep that you will put all this in a pdf and put it up on DMsGuild or something like it to share with others. I've found it very helpful myself. That’s great! It’s why we share things on ENWorld ☺️ Some of my stuff is just a slight spin on what’s already there, giving myself a clearer conception of how to run places/NPCs in ToA. But everyone has their own way of DMing & there’s already a really good companion to ToA on DMs Guild. What I’m hoping to put together on DMs Guild (and have a big document I’m working on & artists I’m talking with) is a bunch of playtested adventure material which expands on the story/mythos of Chult and Acererak, specifically opening up the eastern jungles known as the Chultengar. Hopefully by the time I’ve playtested and put it all in layout it’ll still be of use to others.

  • 06:28 PM - Pokutsa quoted ArwensDaughter in post DnD Gift set for a Beginner - advise me!
The DnD starter set is excellent, and has everything that's necessary to play (except for people to play with) If you are looking to do more than that, the Dungeon Master's Screen reincarnated is a good option, if you think he will be the Dungeon Master. Make sure the starter set and screen are for 5th edition. Another possible addition is more dice. The starter set comes with one set, but it's handy to have a set per player. Wiz dice and Chessex both have interesting colors. You want either individual seven dice sets (20 sided, 12 sided, two 10 sided, 8 sided, 6 sided, 4 sided; the two 10 sided dice are sometimes called percentile dice) or a collection of several sets, sometimes called a pound of dice. Wiz Dice offers some collections in a large bag. There's also the Cup of Wonder which has five sets of dice and a dice cup. Great advice! Thank you! Will it be a usefull set: starter set, Player's Handbook, 3 DnD pencils, 1 DnD mug and some dice set you've recommended? Maybe something from ...

My crew is still trekking through the jungle; They've enjoyed it for the most part, but I can tell that it's beginning to be a bit of a slog for all of us. Once they reach & finish Hrackhamar, I'm going to suggest we change how we handle the traveling. I planning to continue to use the spreadsheet I've been using to "roll" weather and random encounters, but then grouping the days into 5 day chunks: I'll look through the encounters in each chunk, choose one or two particularly interesting ones of us to actually play out; the rest would be handwaved/narrated.
