How would you fine people create the killer klowns from outer space? All that I really remember from the movie is that they have a verity of shapes & technology & that the only weak point is their big red nose, which when pop instantly kills them in a shower of confetti! 1 of their weapons was a popcorn gun & they could create living balloon dogs. Would it work better as a template?

Those are some...very different level break points. Any, uh, particular reason why you're really set on 4/8/8/4 as your progression numbers? Because I guarantee people will complain about them being "weird" and not "round" numbers like multiples of 5 or 10. Personally, I'd fork out the "student" thing into an entirely separate progression: Novice status. Essentially, you get a radically...

Yeah, the abandonment of the Bloodied status/idea seems like one of the worst aspects of 5e pretending 4e mostly didn't exist. Because it was actually useful, adds almost no complexity (one very simple status) in return for a LOT of potential engagement and interest, and you don't have to track it if you don't want to. It's the definition of a nice, simple opt-in mechanic that can be used but...

Depends on how you slice it. The overall rules became "more complex" (and more like old-school "classic" D&D) because they had more exceptions, but the individual use cases became "less complex" because, with those exceptions, they individually had fewer moving parts (and thus less like classic 4e). Since the perspective on offer was intended to focus on the player-side experience, I answered...

Essentials is not dumbed down (I hate that phrase) but it can feel excessively "pruned" if you're used to classic 4e. Thankfully, as others have noted, you can easily play an Essentials character in a party where all the other classes are "original style" and be pretty damn much the same. (I have heard some Essentials classes are more sensitive to the "falling slightly behind at very high level"...

I believe Saeviomagy is saying that someone can be empowered purely through the genetic lottery, or can work fantastically hard and be totally powerless (e.g. slave labor). I think they are perhaps belaboring the point a bit much, as it's not the case that work is totally unrelated to empowerment, or there would be no such thing as struggling toward change (e.g. there was an enormous amount of...

Er, that would be building 4e out of 5e. The original question you asked would be building 5e out of 4e. You'd have to strip out roles from (sub)classes and delete keywords from powers. That was my issue.

Difficult question. Part of the problem is simply that 5e just...chooses not to have formal rules/terms for things. Roles? Gone! Keywords? Gone! Positioning? Who cares! etc. Porting in that kind of...intensely cavalier attitude into 4e would be difficult.

But why would condensing things into 20 levels help any of that? If anything it would make the system more bloated, as you'd be needing to make decisions every single level even if you DID cut things out. You'd have 20 much busier levels! Why not just...not do Epic at all? It seems like a lot less work to just say "I'm not going to bother re-doing Epic tier right now" and instead simplify only...

Sorry, was very busy with games! (Just finished running another session tonight actually.) My hypothesis is that people for whom 4e is foreign to them have their back up most of the time. They're so worried about "messing up" that they can't feel comfortable doing all the things they feel completely comfortable doing in older D&D versions they're more familiar with. Even though the system is...

If I may, I'd like to test a theory. So I'd like to ask two questions: 1. How long had you been playing, prior to the attempted 4e game? 2. How long did you attempt to play 4e? I of course have a hypothesis, and this is a rather meager attempt to test it, but it's what I have.

In a certain sense you could achieve builds over a long period of time--by bequeathing items from dead/levelled-out high-level characters, you can build up enough of a foundation that subsequent characters can start "expecting" certain things. That was, as I understand it, a big part of why Gygax resorted to "DM arms race" type tactics, because he needed ways to defeat the characters that would...

Given my love of 4e, if I ever did make such a thing, you can be sure the "tactical module" fiasco would not be repeated. I was among those openly incensed by the way WotC handled that (and most other 4e-related things during the playtest). I disagree. They have nowhere near the level of support that combat encounters have. That's what I want. Skill Challenges are good for generic...

Whereas I would move in the diametrically opposite direction: 4e has the encounter math structure done, amazingly, almost surely better than I could mock up with limited playtesting resources. Why reinvent the wheel? Preserve "MM3 on a business card" as much as possible because that's work I don't have to do and which is completely outside copyright. Instead, address the places it fell down....

I voted Other, because None of the Above wasn't an option. Battlemaster Fighter fails step 2 (it has no direct mechanical benefit from Charisma). Paladin struggles with step 3, as apart from (purely magical...) healing, it's not actually very good at Leading or Inspiring. Bard fails at Step 1; even a Valor Bard is not a warrior, it's primarily a caster, a sage that just includes a small amount of...

  • 07:04 AM - Cleon quoted abe ray in post Killer klowns from outer space?
How would you stat the balloon dogs? Well the balloon dog in the movie never actually attack anything. All it did was bark and follow a scent trail. So the balloon animal could have been a single-use "track creature" magic item. It just needs a land speed, scent and a hefty modifier to Survival (track by scent). Indeed, maybe there should be a series of balloons of klowning that are a combination of figurines of wondrous power and feather tokens. If I remember the movie correctly, there were other types of balloon too - I'm sure there were capture balloons to hold victims and I think there might have been some kind of deadly acid-spraying balloon (although I suspect I might be imagining that one). Should stats be necessary just give a balloon dog the stats of a Dog or Tiny Animated Object with a "balloon" special quality that makes sharp weapons lethal to them.

  • 06:24 PM - Yaarel quoted abe ray in post Rabbi as a class/kit?
What sort of Kabbalist style golems could be created besides clay? The clay golem derives from the Bible, where the first human (whose name is ‘Human’, Adam) is shaped out of wet clay − namely a ‘lump’ of ‘dirt’ made moist by a ‘mist’ from the ground. God brought this reddish clay statue to life, by breathing Divine breath into it. This is understood as the ‘dirt’ of physical molecules being mysteriously entangled with consciousness. There is a tradition that when humanity is without sin, then it will become possible for humans to create new human life in a similar way. There is a story in the Talmud where the golem looked exactly like a human, but was recognized as being nonhuman, and only animalistic, because of the inability to speak and reason. There is also a story of two rabbis who created a living cow. They understood the miracle had to be for a good purpose, so they cooked it for a feast for Shabat. It seems to me, the rabbinic traditions are more about creating life than cr...

  • 07:07 AM - digitalelf quoted abe ray in post Rabbi as a class/kit?
How would you fine people build a Jewish rabbi as a character class or cleric kit? I figured that at the least the rabbi should be able to create golems earlier in level than normal & be able to control same. It was written for 3.0, but the Book "Testament" by Scott Bennie is all about roleplaying in the biblical era. It has the Levite Priest and The Psalmist core classes, and it has the Judge and Prophet as prestige classes. The book also covered other areas of the biblical world too, with appropriate classes for those regions. It can be mined, out-right converted for 2e, or provide you with a starting point to making your own variations with very little effort. And if you like the book, there were several supporting products for it as well! You can pick up a digital PDF copy here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/19191/Testament-Roleplaying-in-the-Biblical-Era

Is there any alternative uses for the healing/medicine skill? I was thinking of like, acupuncture, or such. No, none of that crazy stuff, the FDA/MFRA/CFIA (or Realms equivalent) will only pay for spells, potions & rituals proven safe & effective for the condition they are intended to treat. None of this whacko alternative medicine like bandages or willow bark or /surgery/ (what are you people thinking? the Gods gave us Clerics for a reason!). Conventional, proven treatments, consisting of armored persons of faith mumbling and gesturing over you, are always preferred.

How would you fine people create yoga and trivia a nwps for dnd? I can't take credit for these, but unfortunately, I do not know to whom credit should go. Trivia Wis -1 A PC with this non-weapon proficiency has picked up bits of knowledge of various topics from friends, family or personal experience. If the DM questions whether the PC would actually know of a certain topic that the actual player is aware of, the DM can call for a proficiency check. Success indicates that the PC may act upon the player's knowledge. A player may run his character as though the latter possessed the former's knowledge of the topic in question. If the roll is made but the player doesn't know anything about the topic, the DM is free to inform the player of what the player's character knows about the subject. If the roll fails however, the only trivia the character knows is limited to what the player already knows. Yoga Wis -3 Yoga is used to improve circulation, sooth the nerves, and stimulat...

Considering that book burning has happened in real life, would it happen in dnd? Any blessings/curses activated by said burning? If you have played Witcher 3, you would see an excellent example of this in fantasy fiction. Not only book burning, but the burning of witches at the stake. It would be easy to create a whole pogrom against a particular group. Even in a setting such as the Forgotten Realms, which is a Renaissance setting, it would not be unheard of for inquisitions to take place. What that has to be balanced against is other perceived threats in the setting.

  • 11:44 AM - Cap'n Kobold quoted abe ray in post Scientist background
Anybody use science period in there adventures? Quite regularly. Science is just looking at what happens when you do something, thinking about why it happens, and then checking your conclusion by doing something else and seeing if that matches what you think will happen. W/could a scientist study magic on a scientific level? If so would they be able to help wizards come up with stronger spells in the same level as lower level spells? That is almost the entire basis for the Eberron setting. Magic and its application is studied scientifically and leads to improvements over time. I wouldn't generally allow a character to make a breakthrough of a scale that allows a higher level spell to be cast in a lower level slot however: That sort of innovation probably happens once a millennia or so. But Eberron magical science has determined that wands/spell focuses made of specific magically active materials give a damage bonus to certain energy types in cantrips for example. What scientific ...

Would any of them work as familiars or as paladin steeds? Sure, but a lot of them could easily use the stats of existing D&D animals whose physiology they resemble - a falanx could use a riding dog of wolf's stats, a rapide a cheetah's, a gigantelope a rhinoceros or bison's, a horrane a leopard or lion's and so on. A lot of them also occupy the same ecological niches.

Nice. Now how about the surfbats? I don't recall ever seeing a D&D conversion of those. The vast majority of the creatures in After Earth seem lacking in the special qualities that make for a memorable D&D monster, namely "new and interesting ways to kill the PCs". :p

Ok, now what do you think about my bite damage? Well 2d3 is too low - even regular SRD Hounds have 1d8 and the Trollhound's AD&D stats did more damage than a Yeth Hound or Hell Hound. I would be willing to entertain 1d12 if Freyar prefers that, but currently like my 2d4 better.
  • 05:11 PM - Dausuul quoted abe ray in post War paint
Emergency warfare & for fun. Edit: I missed that this was a 3.5 thread instead of 5E, so Inspiration does not apply. However, I would still focus more on the psychological benefits to the paintee instead of a blanket modifier. Flat mechanical benefits rarely offer much in the way of fun. Why not make it a Bond or Personality Trait instead? Describe how you're painting yourself for an upcoming battle, tailor the patterns and colors to the scenario, and get Inspiration. No additional mechanics necessary, and it encourages the player to put some thought into it. As for "emergency warfare"... I don't really know what you mean by that. Warfare is an emergency by definition. If you're talking about a situation where the PCs get ambushed in camp or in town, they aren't likely to have a chance to put on war paint.
  • 04:41 PM - Dausuul quoted abe ray in post War paint
Basically war paint when applied to a humanoid cases fear to enemies (I.e. -3 to attacks) and adds +3 to armor for up to 2-3 days per application. What do you think & how might it improved? That is an extremely powerful magic item. It is, effectively, granting +3 AC to all of your allies and +6 to yourself. What is your objective in creating this item?
