I wonder how much western childhood education (education here means parents teaching their kids as well, not just formal education) comes into this? My wife is a primary school teacher and takes an absolute approach of "violence is wrong". This is line with most education systems I have come across. They leave no wiggle room for self defense, self preservation, mutual consent or other...

If you want them to escape then make sure you have a robust escape mechanism in place: not just, they run away when under 50% HP - have a means of getting out of combat and a means of getting out of the combat scene. PCs have an irritating habit of foiling even the best laid plans. That being said make sure it is a plausible mechanism: a bandit captain probably won't have access to dimension...

Thateous Finishes off the last two reavers in the keep just before you hear shouting from outside. "Intruders! Intruders in the keep!" You quickly realise that you have taken most of the keep, though the bailey is held by the cult. There are some unexplored rooms downstairs but the two entrances - one in the room upstairs and the main entrance into the hall - could be held against many...

Illvilious tries to land a blow on his attacker but the reaver dodges all his attacks easily. His actions are not in vain as a blast of energy flashed from the corridor, leaving the pirate barely standing. Nariah attack and damage on Reaver 6: 1D20+7 = +7 = 19 2D10+4 = +4 = 12 I forgot about Thateous. He needs to take his turn 4 as well Nariah 23+6/23 Errol 36+6/36

A couple of suggestions that might work, rather than just re-skinning EB War Fiend/Fey/whatever Essentially give the blade lock the Warpriest Feature keyed off CHA. This gives the warlock a slight dps boost. War Magic Stolen from the Eldritch Knight. This one is troublesome because it would have to be granted at a later level than the pacts are - something I think should be avoided. ...

A wizard guide that doesn't even mention concentration? Most of the most powerful wizard spells require concentration and without taking that into account it is easy to end up with a spell list that is too limited by this mechanic. You talk about the spell book evolving but make no mention of how to do this. You are also severely lacking in personal defensive spells.

I wonder how much of the bad rap comes from the varying AC of the edition - flat footed; surprised; attacks from the rear - rather than THAC0 being complicated. People only remember AC being more complicated and it’s easier to blame one thing.

This is certainly a possible solution to help balance different mechanical subsystems within a game (martial damage vs magical effects). I still don't consider a lack of critical failure a flaw though - its a mechanism to balance a game and not just crit hits need to be balanced with crit failures. If you roll to place AoE it lowers the effectiveness - it is now harder to get optimal...

Rorik Rorik handed out some of his won rations to the hungry escapees. When Gorak introduced himself, Rorik paused for a second. THE Gorak he wondered. He certainly seemed as savage as Gorak's reputation, but Rorik kept his thoughts to himself for now. "What do you have planned now? Rorik asked Bria. "If there are kobolds infesting these caves, they must have some supplies. It would set us in good stead achieving our own aims. Your companions certainly look like they could use some better clothes." [OOC]I've assumed Rorik and Welkin have shared their 20 rations among the 3 escapees, meaning everyone is carrying 3 rations now 20/5=4 and one rations eaten each.[\OOC] Hey TallIan! Actually, if the guards were standing close to the cage when they dropped, their weapons may be in reach of the prisoners?

Reading through, I'm a little irked so much of the rules seem held back for a forthcoming book available in a year or so IF the Kickstarter funds. Especially when half this book was an adventure... Couldn't they have put all the rules in one book and then done the adventure(s) separately? Meh. Here's what his website says about the next book: "Kingdoms & Warfare is a 5th Edition supplement with rules for running countries and organizations like thieves' guilds, churches and wizard colleges, as well as more rules for large scale warfare." Sounds like a nice follow-up expansion to me and not something I was expecting in the Strongholds and Followers book. The warfare rules in the appendix of this current book are more of a bonus as far as I am concerned. Also, 50 of the 265 pages are the adventure. An adventure that helps DMs try out the rules as TallIan indicates. More like a fifth than a half of the book, but who's counting...

I'll let you know when the long rest happens. TallIan - Make a survival check with advantage and three perception or investigation checks. I forgot all about you bringing the captured kobold with to help you find the camp. Anyone who wants to try to get additional info from him, he will already spill whatever beans he has so no skill checks are needed, just ask him questions. Remember, though, he isn't good at numbers. :)

...e he needs to be. Cheers!" It was nice to see the others back at the baron's table, celebrating victory. Strange to be able to watch, when nobody else seems to notice you. It is also more gloomy than you remember, althought that might be what some call the Mists of Death. And there it is; your lifeless body. It feels familiar, despite leaving it for what seems like years ago. SOON, a familiar but still bonechilling voice speaks suddenly. You dare not look behind you, your vision fixed on your physical remains. SOON YOU WILL INHABIT YOUR BODY AGAIN. IF YOU SO CHOOSE. Looking back, you see the figure fade away, the skull that forms its head seemingly grinning at you before that, too, vanishes. And then you realize it's not the strange figure, but you that have disappeared, and it's darkness around you for a long, long time. Until suddenly, a spark of light in the distance. Inviting, alluring. This is your chance! Back to the living! Alright, that's it! Thanks for playing everyone! TallIan and Umbran I totally agree with you guys. Like any tool in the DM's toolbox it shouldn't be overused or used flippantly. There needs to be some intention that will add to the story and the fun of the table. Like I said, in that specific scenario I'd probably just have the cultists blast the player and themselves, because it would be a fitting sacrifice they might make for their demon patron. And I think that doing things that can unfairly target a player's character or changing how powers work without a good reason/explanation is poor form. A DM has only as much power as the players allow, since that position comes with the trust that you are going to run the game fairly with fun in mind.

EarlyBird Thateous TallIan ArwensDaughter Zadolix I have to say, I didn't expect everyone to survive so long. (Mostly I expected you not to go to the inn the first night. But that's decision point is long since passed.) But the battle for the inn is almost finished. This is just a convenient time to do this: I'm doing something unorthodox. I'm having you level up in the middle of the fight. So everyone is now level 2 and there are still wolves incoming. I'll resume the IC in a few days once everyone has leveled up. Spellcasters gain an unused 1st level spell slot but if your class has to prepare a list of spell for the day, that list remains unchanged until you long rest. (sorry wizards, clerics and druids). Hit points: Take half the die for your class + 1. And you get those HP immediately.

Everett arrives at M19 with 15 feet of movement left. He used his action dash. He sees the room post in response to Surina's actions the other day. The Innkeeper is the sleeping greenish dot in M20. Perin, we'll say Perin's last round action (somehow) was waking the cleric in the room upstairs and if we haven't heard from him in a few days. Zadolix, TallIan, waiting for you guys to act.

... Cultures have a different (IMO a much more callous) view of human life or violence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMeZCPbM6bA One country stands out in being the most violent and warlike.
  • 05:02 PM - Michele quoted TallIan in post Why are we okay with violence in RPGs?
All the while they are told, "Violence is Bad!" There is nothing wrong in providing fictional bad examples of bad things. So we are left with a simple moral question of "Is he bad? Yes. Kill him." But the definition of bad is essentially "not the same as me." and many adults are ill equipped to actually deal with the moral question of, "When is violence acceptable?" because the only answer they can give is, "When is not against a person." Well, no. I disagree. It is entirely possible to say "bad = enemy", and as I mentioned above, staying with the basics, an enemy may well be another human, if he threatens your survival, the survival of your offspring, or the survival of your community. And I disagree this is not a thing in the West. Self-defense, legitimate defense, are very strong in the public opinion in the West, and will not be absent in the life of the mind of a kid as he grows. And not all fiction portrays the victim of violence as an innocent pedestrian who's just crossing th...
  • 03:39 PM - Umbran quoted TallIan in post Villains that are supposed to escape
That being said make sure it is a plausible mechanism: a bandit captain probably won't have access to dimension door, unless he is a lieutenant to a powerful mage. In which case make sure that you've dropped hints about what the PCs are dealing with. The mage helping the bandit captain escape *is* the hint about what they are dealing with. You may want to telegraph offensive capabilities that are beyond level appropriate - save-or-die, or "this is a huge ancient dragon, not some punk hatchling". But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one you're likely to meet again later, and *then* the information will be useful.

  • 12:16 PM - Oofta quoted TallIan in post Let's Talk About THAC0
I wonder how much of the bad rap comes from the varying AC of the edition - flat footed; surprised; attacks from the rear - rather than THAC0 being complicated. People only remember AC being more complicated and it’s easier to blame one thing.I kind of liked flat footed, surprised and facing. It added a bit more tactics. Never cared for calculating THACO.As far as the "only people who didn't use it dis it" ... umm ... no. My wife learned to play with 2E and was quite happy with the change in calculation with the advent of 3, as were several other people in my group at the time. It accomplished the same goal while being more complex for most people.

  • 11:08 PM - Lanefan quoted TallIan in post 10 Tips to Being a Better Dungeon Master – A Dungeons and Dragons Guide
This is certainly a possible solution to help balance different mechanical subsystems within a game (martial damage vs magical effects). I still don't consider a lack of critical failure a flaw though - its a mechanism to balance a game and not just crit hits need to be balanced with crit failures. If you roll to place AoE it lowers the effectiveness - it is now harder to get optimal placement. If you also allow critical failure wen rolling to place AoE it lowers the effectiveness even further - you now could hit your own party. This brings magic down in effectiveness to make sure damage can compete as a viable option. Exactly! :) Alternatively you could add criticals to damage and increase its effectiveness to compete with magic. Also done, and both of these ideas come from back when I started DMing. I find that critical failure cannot be implemented without making the game either much gimmer or much more comical (unless you brush over the failure so casually that you might a...

    2. Critical failures can be funny. Most of what I have to say about this is to other commentors in this thread namely: Sorry Shiroiken, I just found your post first. I disagree with the premise. Critical effects should be balanced across the sub-systems of the game. As an example I am playing a wizard through Out of the Abyss - 25 sessions in and my wizard has make exactly one attack roll. So across all the sessions so far he's had 5% chance to critically fail. Compare that to the martial characters who make dozens of attacks each round. If you have critical fails that have a mechanical effect then it needs to affect combat, magic, skill, etc. The flaw there isn't the critical fail rules, it's that casters should be forced to roll aim for placement of ranged spells just like any other character using a ranged item or missile. And on said aiming rolls, a fumble would of course be possible. Just ask Jack, a mage from an old campaign of mine, what happens when you fumble with a fi...

  • 11:16 AM - Shiroiken quoted TallIan in post 10 Tips to Being a Better Dungeon Master – A Dungeons and Dragons Guide
You’re looking at one tiny aspect of magic - damage - when magic can do so much more that has a much greater effect on play. Compare that to martial characters who only ever do damage. Something like hypnotic pattern has no critical effect yet it can lock down half an encounter - no matter how many hp those creatures have - a far more powerful effect than the best possible dpr character could ever hope to achieve with a single action. While I don't disagree, that's off topic from the need for critical failures to balance critical hits. You were saying that critical hits without critical misses were necessary to balance martial vs. magic, but since magic can also critically hit, critical hits aren't useful as a balancing mechanic of martial vs. magic.
  • 03:28 AM - Shiroiken quoted TallIan in post 10 Tips to Being a Better Dungeon Master – A Dungeons and Dragons Guide
I still disagree that they critical hits should be balanced off against critical failures - no matter how balanced tehy are against each other. Critical hits make martial characters more deadly (it increases their damage) conversely critical failures make martial characters less deadly. So if you have a magic system that is more powerful than the martial system in the game, adding critical hits without adding critical failures can improve the magic-martial balance.Except you still have spells that use attacks that can be a critical hit. Not to mention the cantrips everyone uses, you also have spells like Steel Wind Strike that can critically hit for 12d10 force damage (against 5 targets), plus you can flood the battlefield with 10 small objects with animate object that each can critically hit for 2d8 damage. Because 5E has so many different ways for casters to make attacks, critical hits are not a good balancing mechanism between martial and magical attacks.

I don't think that belongs in 5e because 5e gives with both hands (compared to 3.x where you got +2 in this and -2 in that). Critical hits in 5e have a very limited effect after level 3The balance is not against how many times you roll an attack, but agains...

  • 05:08 AM - MNblockhead quoted TallIan in post Has anyone used WeWork for Gaming?
I’ve have had one game at WeWork. It was certainly convenient (more space than any of the group could offer at their house) and no one had any tidying up afterwards. We had pizza delivered as well without any issue - the pizza place is apparently a regular supplier for meetings there. Noise wasn’t an issue but we were there from 20:00 to around 23:00 so we only had the cleaners in the building. Did you book it through Kickstarter or were you already a WeWork customer?

tglassy I've noticed jmuchielo and fireinthedust both have 5 characters. I think I caused the confusion where one of my posts says 5 characters and another says four. since 12 characters is a bit on the low side go ahead and make one more so that everyone has five. To be fair, I am also being lazy because I used the character generator and it gave me five. I only posted four of them, the ones I could remember, in case I was only supposed to do four. I’m not convinced I can get through with only four, given my luck with the game... so I’m glad you are making it five!
  • 04:34 AM - dnd4vr quoted TallIan in post Changing Expertise, Adding Double Proficiency
yes, a bit. But with +6 it is not too bad. I have hoped that some skill point option would be available in a splat by now or better in the DMG. I don´t know if I´d use it, but that is ok. In the other Thread I proposed proficiency increase at 3,6,9,12,15,18 to go up to 8 and I still believe this would be a good option. I could imagine that if you like expertise capping at +12, you could have it be x1.5 instead of x2. When I spoke about skill points in my post above, you would not get any when yu level up, instead you are just able to have different kinf of proficiencies. I would love to have a default method to gain new proficiencies when you level up, and fortunately there is already one: In the DMG under alternate treasure you can allow characters to train with someone who is exceptional at a skill to gain a new proficiency in a skill, which transfers to spend downtime in special circumstances. Difficult, but possible. Our first increased proficiency bonus progression went to +8 and...

What is this referring to? "You see! You see! She thinks she better than us! This... this...ratcatcher!" Carroc continues his impotent rage. U'Tempei's words do seem to upset the crown a little as a few start to grumble but most of the villagers seem content to let strangers risk their life. I don't recall her saying anything that could even remotely be construed as her being better than someone else, especially when she was talking quietly to her companions not announcing to the world that they should get moving. She would never think let alone say something like that. We rushed away too fast for her to confront him again.
