Fistan Fistan spends some time setting a ward on each entrance to the room they chose, once done he draws a circle on the ground with his wand that leaves a strange line. He chants each of the party's name as he moves his hands and wand in the strange rituals that make up his power and a translucent wall slowly builds up from the line, forming a dome. Eowyn's healing magic brings Saarthax back from unconsciousness, allowing him to attack once more. This time hacking at the solid branches of the monster. Bertold lands a god bow that severs a branch, but the thing seems unaffected. U'Tempei looses two arrows, one skitters through leaves and branches but the other makes a much more solid thud. Three of the prisoners serve Gormok a haunch of meat, while the other two stand around shifting nervously. From the roof top Errol can see a number of pirates heading to the walls, all looking out of the castle. With their backs exposed he is able to dispatch a few before some of them start to shoot arrows and bolts back. After only a few minutes Errol is able to clear all the pirates from...

I had to think about this a little the last time it came up. Since you're all effectively acting on the same initiative any time a PC goes down, the player would miss a turn. Around a table this might make an effective counter to "whack-a-PC" but the probability of being locked out for several turns seems a little harsh for a PbP game where several turns could mean a month of real time...

Perin walks along in silence, conserving water by not talking. It’s hard for him to find the personal space he’s used to while in the middle of the group but his attention seems mostly on Blaithe. Once the group finds a camp site Perin takes Blaithe on a short patrol, heading out to the limit of site and sound of the camp, looking for recent activity or possible approach routes to the camp. ...

IMX people hate their own lawyers as much as any other lawyer. :) I would not call that a rules lawyer, but someone who knows the rules well. Rules lawyer, IMO, are the kind of people who come up with, and push for things like going prone in melee for disadvantage and then claiming using luck to get super-advantage. I have no problem with a player pointing out the correct rule, so long...

Perin will go behind Swithun and Surina for normal marching. Blaith can range ahead of the group. If anything needs scouting Perin will happily sneak forward to check it out. While he's happy to scout ahead, I don't see him as having the personality to push back against Swithun's enthusiasm. Not sure this matters all that much but Perin's ritual is only 8 hours. Realising the tactical situation, you quickly barricade the main door and the side door that leads to the ramparts. Both have sturdy wooden doors and thick bars that could hold off a determined attack for hours if not days. The keep has arrow slits that offer a good view all around. Looking into the bailey there are a half dozen or more reavers, bandits and other ne'er do wells quickly...

If you want them to escape then make sure you have a robust escape mechanism in place: not just, they run away when under 50% HP - have a means of getting out of combat and a means of getting out of the combat scene. PCs have an irritating habit of foiling even the best laid plans. That being said make sure it is a plausible mechanism: a bandit captain probably won't have access to dimension...

Most of the comments address methods of generating ability scores. As of the moment, only @TallIan has commented on the topic of having a Session 0. He raised a salient point in that as one moves deeper into adulthood, other responsibilities tend to limit the time available to play. If it's possible for a group, I always recommend a Session 0 for the reasons cbwjm mentioned: it allows for building relationships between the PCs and removes the element of low-level paranoia about the honesty of rolled stats produced by other members of the group. As TallIan said, though, a Session 0 is not always possible for some players. That suggests to me this rule-of-thumb: 1) When there's not going to be a Session 0, the PCs should be created using either the standard array or the 27-point* buy. 2) With a Session 0, choose any one of the rolled stat methods, the standard array, or the point-buy method. In fact, each player could use a different DM-approved method if they wished. For any of the group's players who aren't able to make it to Session 0, see rule 1. If time allows, a Session 0...

Meeting-up TallIan asked about the backstory for our meeting up as group. I am assuming that we have generally met due to various common interests and are now hanging out in the Tavern where Ara performs. Ara is widely know about town as there are not many - any other - painter/illusionists publicly practicing. Anyone interested in magic or getting an inexpensive portrait would have run into Ara. In particular, Ara would have sought out Kuhl Obleequay, to hear about his travels and to create realistic illusions and paintings of some things he has seen in his travels. Any fighter/adventurer that is remotely interested will hear about Ara's thoughts on Small Unit Tactics and Minor Illusions Additionally, Ara invites Kuhl and others who are interested to come along for some of his Parkour training Ara demonstrating Parkour - Acrobatics DC 10: 1D20+5 = [12]+5 = 17

Thanks TallIan and KhalessNestor. Thanks for the information. Based on your input, I took a closer look at the rules and I see what is happening. A spell caster needs to be holding the arcane focus (p.203). However, the definition of Cleric says that they can use a Holy Symbol as a spell casting focus and the definition of Holy Symbol says that it can wear it visibly or bear it on a shield. Given this, I think that Ara is actually going to go with a Component pouch - no need to re-sheath the arcane focus as he switches back to archer mode. TallIan, thanks for the offer on supplies. My character has 15 gp, but quite a shopping list - starting with a Familiar (10 gp), not to mention melee and ranged weapons... it is enough to make Ara question - but not change - his decision not to start as a fighter.

TallIan , no worries on jumping on my story, we all have to have formed as a group by the start anyway. In a similar vein, I was thinking Hunter and Magen would be trying to find Mikel. In his guild or tavern days Hunter could have heard of the bookworm wizard and would be searching him out for knowledge on the Dwimmermount or something like that. The idea of SunGold’s religious order being our groups sponsor makes some since to me. The Guild Hunter belongs too could afford to be a sponsor but I can’t think of a real good reason they would spend the cash. A religious order though would seem to have plenty of reasons to want to look into the unknown. I’m sorry to hear that Disposable Hero had to bow out, but I’m getting pretty pumped about this game.

  • 04:05 PM - Bawylie quoted TallIan in post On the Dodge Action
Thanks, I realised last night what my mistake was on the earlier post. The one I linked to shows the probability of rolling exactly that number, not greater than that number. I know you say it's not that but if you add all the % under the DC you want you get the same answer in both tables. It's kinda handy to do quick on the fly maths mid-session, as long as you understand how inaccurate it is. A flat bonus is also closer to =/-3 rather than 5. I think the idea of a +/-5 bonus comes passive skill checks getting +5 for advantage and -5 for Advantage. But going back to the OP's question requires us to look at specific situations, and squinting at highly inaccurate approximations of a bonus won't help with that I wonder how much heavy lifting “all the time” is doing when we’re evaluating the sentiment “I dodge all the time.” Once per fight? Literally every action? Often enough that it’s saved my bacon a handful of memorable times? Hand-in-hand I wonder whether the emotional impact of su...
  • 04:36 AM - Ovinomancer quoted TallIan in post On the Dodge Action
Did you follow the link? It explains how ADV/DIS actually work. A roll of 11+ changes in probability by 0.25%, a roll of 20 changes by 4.75% This post actually shows the maths. There are hundreds of google results showing the same thing. I'm an electrical engineer who's made a few posts on this topic and I cannot follow what the chart in that post is doing. It's right at the ends, but very badly wrong in the middle. Whatever it's showing isn't a 'chance to roll this number or higher' which is the critical question of advantage (lower for disadvantage) and it's not chance to roll that exact number (which isn't interesting at all) so... The basic question of advantage is can you roll higher that number N on 2 d20 rolls taking only the highest. This is figured by finding the odds of rolling higher than that number on a single d20 and then adding the product of those odds times the odds that you don't roll that number on a single d20. For example, if the target number is 11, the odds of r...

There are hundreds of google results showing the same thing. lord save me from folks who misunderstand %. it depends on what you want to talk about % of. If you have 1$ and i give you 1$ i have given you 100% more money - YAY if you have 500$ and i give you 100$ i have given you 20% more money. Which would you rather take, the 100% deal or the 20% deal? If you need an 11+ to hit and you get disadvantage you will now miss 5 more times in 20. if you need a 20+ to hit and you get disadvantage you will now miss 19 more times in 400 or .95 more times in 20 (roughly) What matters in the long run for both the money examples is how much you gain or lose in actual dollars or actual hits and misses - not the % increase from where you started. Nobody at the store is gonna turn away your 100$ because you started at 500 ...
  • 09:04 PM - 5ekyu quoted TallIan in post On the Dodge Action
It is not a +/- 5 at 50% see here. This topic comes up a LOT in forums. At 50% chance to hit ADV/DIS has the least effect on the outcome, not even altering a roll by 1. So when there is a 50% chance to succeed, then dodge is a bad option. This is like saying why have the dash action, its a terrible option for action assuming the enemy is within 25ft of you. That being said, you are correct that the OP is trying to put mediocre rolls in place to work out when dodge would be good. Your question "when is dodge good/bad?" should give the answer "it's bad whenever your DC is close to needing a 10 on the d20 and good when you want extremes (1 or 20)" So smbakeresq assumptions will always make the dodge action bad. To be more specific: Use dodge when your tank (splint, shield and defensive fighting style for 20 AC) is holding a choke point. The less damage he takes the less party resources (healing) is needed after the fight. Similarly if he is low on HP and his opponent(s) aren't - making ...

The trouble with this is that proficiency bonus applies to a wizard’s spell casting. So you’ll end up making a multi tier proficiency table or revert back to the nightmare that was 3e skills Exactly. Just don't give the wizard any weapon proficiencies instead. They don't add the +2 bonus to using weapons, but still get the +2 to their spellcasting.
  • 02:10 PM - quoted TallIan in post Brand new DM to 5E and many concerns...
I also think you may be failing to account for the fact that 5e uses ability score increases to represent progression. So the fighter, whose primary stat in this particular example is DEX, is going to be free to up his DEX at level 4, 6, etc. Whereas the Wizard is going to want to up his INT first. That is an excellent point! I only played 3E for about a year or two back in the day and of course ability score increases in 1E and 2E were almost always through magic items only. That does make some difference at least so thanks!

This would be a HUGE, unbalanced boost for the fighter, +2 to AC at tier 1 play is insane, it would still be good at tier 4 play. The +6 bonus to AC would just be stupidly game warping. Seriously don't do this. Well, giving the way 5E was designed, I will probably change it to 1/2 Proficiency bonus added to AC, rounded down, until I see it in action for a while. That way it is +1 (as written), and at the highest levels would be +3. IMO, if a +3 bonus breaks the game at high levels, the game is seriously flawed.

I think coming from older editions where fighters are powerful at low levels and wizards are just dead weight until level 5 might make the fighter appear rubbish... Oh, I am sure this is why I feel so wrong with a lot of the stuff I am reading! What can I say, it bothers me that a Fighter with Dex 16 has the same chance of hitting as a Wizard with Dex 16 if they both use Finesse weapons. So, my Fighter, who has spent years training in weapons and armor and everything related to combat, is basically just as likely to hit as your Wizard who has spent most of his years studying spells and reading, etc. How does that make ANY sense???

It sounds interesting but the schools are. Or we’ll balanced against each other or across the spell levels. Look at abjuration for example; at level 1 it has one spell that is virtually a spell slot tax (mage armour) another that becomes essential once you have a few slots to spare (shield) and a ritual that probably makes most mages spell books (alarm). Then at 2nd level you can lock doors ??? and at level 3 you have one of the staple spells for wizards - counterspell. I think your idea could be fun, but not would require a LOT more work than simply stating that you can only cast spells from your school. Yes, that was sort of the point of my last sentence. I would like that idea but it would need some more work. You need more spells and/or a mechanic for grabbing some spells from other schools.

Consider this. The player you has to act is a STR based fighter with low DEX DM: "Stone blocks big enough to crush a horse are falling from the ceiling. What do you do?" PC: "err...." DM: "Crash! Another block lands just feet from you." PC: "I...ah..." DM: "With a hideous grinding noise a block directly above you falls. Can you get out the way in time? Make a DEX save." All that does is teach them to not play if they can't think fast.

Not entirely relevant but rituals take 10 mins longer that normal, not 10 mins. So for spells that have casting time longer that 1 action the only difference is whether a spell slot is used or not. Oops. Good call. I misremembered that. I think my point still stands.

My argument against targeting the pall'y legs would be that you target a square with an AoE. So in this case, you're aiming at the square (cube really) below the pall'y That is demonstrably not true. As a matter of fact, unless you are using a variant where you play on a grid, there are no "squares". So it can't even be possibly true in the base game. It's a line - I can shoot in in any direction I like. I can fire ti at 20 degrees to the left - which if I was on a grid would start in the sam square as if firing 20 degrees to the right, but the next squares definitely wouldn't be the same. Same, I can fire it straight up, or any other angle along that axis as well.

Ok, I’ve used the wrong wording there. I don’t like to tell the players how their characters think either. “He seems confident in what he is saying.” Or “He doesn’t seem able to maintain eye contact while talking to you.” Would be more accurate. Something to convey an idea of reading a truth or lie without tying the player to a line of thought. Or something to suggest a miss read. Eg a shy NPC looks at his feet all the time, a failed insight check fails to pick up on the fact that he’s shy only that he won’t make eye contact. I’ll leave what the PC thinks up the player. What's the cost of failure, though? In this example, rolling Insight is zero cost -- at worst I gain no new information. This instantiation of Insight means it's a no cost lie detector. I don't like that. Add to this bith of the cues you give above I'd present as part of the framing -- to me, this is stuff a PC should notice. I've come around to the idea that I want players to know something's up, because the fun part i...

You can also have situation where an failed insight check comes with the answer, "You think he's lying." when in actual fact he is not. I treat a failed insight check as a wrong read, rather than no read. How the PCs react to this information can affect other things. eg the PC attack/rob/whatever the NPC because they think he's lying, when he isn't (or no one else thinks he is) means that the local law/underground enforcement gets involved.Nah, I make it a rule to not tell 0layers what their characters think. I've got the rest of it all, they get their characters. Not that you can't do that, I just don't. Which is why I've gone the route I've described.

While I think the DM can - and should - make monsters have cool and unique abilities, doing this mid combat to suit the turn's tactical situation isn't the way to go. Shaping an AoE to fit the current formation of the PC's without hitting any monsters is just plain cheating, and will lead to bad feelings from the players. I think your suggestions about how to change the attack are pretty cool, but should be decided before the session, or at the very latest the start of the combat - before anyone has a turn. Sorry, but I disagree. One of the tools of being a DM is being able to read a table and adjust the game to make the challenge more fitting or fun. This doesn't mean a DM should change abilities on the fly just to grief the players. But if it makes narrative sense, or enhances the fun at the table, there is absolutely no reason a DM shouldn't do so. For example, I sometimes only have HP, AC, attack bonus, and general damage outlined for potential enemies my players might encounter....

Rorik laughs at Lindral's joke, thinking how Slipper was barely older than his own squire. "Rule number 2 is not trying to face monsters on your own." Warian and Galan could stay here while Rorik was out, but Edgar would have to come with if he wanted to learn anything. Erevan calls down from where he is still perched on the beam, "And if Rules 1 and 2 fail you, Rule number 3 is: Be the bigger monster. He dropped down, transforming in mid-air into a great bear, he landed on his hind legs, his head nearly brushing the beam he'd been sitting on. He held the pose for a moment, then reverted to his natural shape. "Now where's that beer?"
