In that case probably best to go for initiative. Initiative: 1D20+2 = +2 = 13 1D20+2 = +2 = 3 1D20+2 = +2 = 15 1D20+2 = +2 = 15 1D20+2 = +2 = 14 The party wins if anyone gets above 15. The bandits are only going to walk closer to the door and dodge for two rounds, so go ahead and make any actions you want for rounds 1 and 2.

It is hard to seek justice in war as both sides become a great machine set on breaking the other and many who not be enemies are forced to be such. We need to be careful lest we lose ourselves to...

Eroll finds an arrow slit that overlooks the battlement, allowing him to shoot at the approaching attackers. Illvilious, Gormok and Thateous all ready themselves for attackers bursting though the door. Anyone with a ranged attack can get 2 shots at the approaching attackers: AC 14 and dodging. The range, if it matters, is 40; 10. Do you want Nariah to join you in the bunk room?

Bertold lands a god bow that severs a branch, but the thing seems unaffected. U'Tempei looses two arrows, one skitters through leaves and branches but the other makes a much more solid thud. I had to think about this a little the last time it came up. Since you're all effectively acting on the same initiative any time a PC goes down, the player would miss a turn. Around a table this might make an effective counter to "whack-a-PC" but the probability of being locked out for several turns seems a little harsh for a PbP game where several turns could mean a month of real time...

Once the group finds a camp site Perin takes Blaithe on a short patrol, heading out to the limit of site and sound of the camp, looking for recent activity or possible approach routes to the camp. ...

Rules lawyer, IMO, are the kind of people who come up with, and push for things like going prone in melee for disadvantage and then claiming using luck to get super-advantage. Realising the tactical situation, you quickly barricade the main door and the side door that leads to the ramparts. If you want them to escape then make sure you have a robust escape mechanism in place: not just, they run away when under 50% HP - have a means of getting out of combat and a means of getting out of the combat scene. PCs have an irritating habit of foiling even the best laid plans. That being said make sure it is a plausible mechanism: a bandit captain probably won't have access to dimension...

  • 02:49 PM - Redthistle mentioned TallIan in post Generating Player Characters
Most of the comments address methods of generating ability scores. As of the moment, only @TallIan has commented on the topic of having a Session 0. He raised a salient point in that as one moves deeper into adulthood, other responsibilities tend to limit the time available to play. If it's possible for a group, I always recommend a Session 0 for the reasons cbwjm mentioned: it allows for building relationships between the PCs and removes the element of low-level paranoia about the honesty of rolled stats produced by other members of the group. As TallIan said, though, a Session 0 is not always possible for some players. That suggests to me this rule-of-thumb: 1) When there's not going to be a Session 0, the PCs should be created using either the standard array or the 27-point* buy. 2) With a Session 0, choose any one of the rolled stat methods, the standard array, or the point-buy method. In fact, each player could use a different DM-approved method if they wished. For any of the group's players who aren't able to make it to Session 0, see rule 1. If time allows, a Session 0...

Meeting-up TallIan asked about the backstory for our meeting up as group. I am assuming that we have generally met due to various common interests and are now hanging out in the Tavern where Ara performs. Ara is widely know about town as there are not many - any other - painter/illusionists publicly practicing. Anyone interested in magic or getting an inexpensive portrait would have run into Ara. In particular, Ara would have sought out Kuhl Obleequay, to hear about his travels and to create realistic illusions and paintings of some things he has seen in his travels. Any fighter/adventurer that is remotely interested will hear about Ara's thoughts on Small Unit Tactics and Minor Illusions Additionally, Ara invites Kuhl and others who are interested to come along for some of his Parkour training Ara demonstrating Parkour - Acrobatics DC 10: 1D20+5 = [12]+5 = 17

Thanks TallIan and KhalessNestor. Thanks for the information. Based on your input, I took a closer look at the rules and I see what is happening. A spell caster needs to be holding the arcane focus (p.203). However, the definition of Cleric says that they can use a Holy Symbol as a spell casting focus and the definition of Holy Symbol says that it can wear it visibly or bear it on a shield. Given this, I think that Ara is actually going to go with a Component pouch - no need to re-sheath the arcane focus as he switches back to archer mode. TallIan, thanks for the offer on supplies. My character has 15 gp, but quite a shopping list - starting with a Familiar (10 gp), not to mention melee and ranged weapons... it is enough to make Ara question - but not change - his decision not to start as a fighter.

  • 02:58 AM - eayres33 mentioned TallIan in post The Dwimmermount [OOC]
TallIan , no worries on jumping on my story, we all have to have formed as a group by the start anyway. In a similar vein, I was thinking Hunter and Magen would be trying to find Mikel. In his guild or tavern days Hunter could have heard of the bookworm wizard and would be searching him out for knowledge on the Dwimmermount or something like that. The idea of SunGold’s religious order being our groups sponsor makes some since to me. The Guild Hunter belongs too could afford to be a sponsor but I can’t think of a real good reason they would spend the cash. A religious order though would seem to have plenty of reasons to want to look into the unknown. I’m sorry to hear that Disposable Hero had to bow out, but I’m getting pretty pumped about this game.

Was I not supposed to? It's mostly the posh stuff nobles need to prove they are noble Well you were suppose to make up your background to fit your character, and then I was gonna give you the background gear and gold. But Noble seems like it fit very well. Cool, thanks, that is generous. I was tempted to look into the cavalry route, but didn't have the gold to get a warhorse, and then the first two HP rolls were 1's so decided HAM would be better than Mounted Combatant anyway. If you don't mind, I might tweak his equipment purchases to try and get the horse some barding, and then also buy a lance. I would wait till after the first adventure. Maybe something that you could ask be crafted or purchased from passing caravans. Note your the only person with a mount right now, getting horses for the others will come later, and that's when you'll need the barding and lance.

Finnan looks over the stuff and claims a water-skin and a belt pouch. He also takes the whetstone and sits down with it, pulling out his beloved tome he begins to examine the runes and compares them to the information in his tome. After spending a couple hours comparing the runes on the stone with those found in the book, Finnan discovers the properties of the odd magical item. Once per day (long rest), this stone may be used to sharpen a melee weapon with the piercing or slashing qualities and then grant that weapon a +1 magic bonus to attack and damage rolls for the next 8 hours. Eventually the stone will wear down, but from the looks of it that may be 10-12 months down the road.

Yes, we get that, but to compare like for like you would have to have your fireball hit 8 targets therefor doing 64d6 damage. So while SB is a hugely powerful cantrip, in the right situation, it still doesn't compare to fireball.Unless you compare a third level spell cast at a single foe against a cantrip cast at eight adjacent foes! The dumbest being basic electrical safety the kind you need to know about for stuff like using extension cords and plugging in PCs or food processors in. If I didn’t have a solid grasp on that BEFORE I started by career in power electronics I’d be dead by now. And I thought them retraining us on the bailer was derogatory. They weren't overly impressed even I asked if that meant we where allowed to still use it. I honestly wouldn't mind the training as some company procedures have changed slightly but it comes just as a massive productivity hike so we have to do the same amount of work just with 90 less hours a week, that's a shift a day and boy it shows.

OK I want to double check before I commit a sleeping foe is unconsciousness correct? Thus taking auto crit? So James could sneak up and most likely dispatch him? We then all pile in the room and ambush the patrol. After some looking through the rules, I found that there is no "sleeping" condition, but the Sleep spell turns enemies "unconscious", so if I'm interpreting that correctly, yes, a sleeping foe is unconscious. Thus you can sneak up and dispatch him, because any melee attack would be a critical and including your sneak attack, the minimum of damage you'll deal is enough to bring it down to 0 hp. I am, sorry, I've not posted much - its the same for all my games atm, I've started a new job and have had a busy few weeks. I don't think you wanted us to roll saves for enemies, but since you don't show the stat blocks it would be hard to do anyway. If successful, then Finnan will have the drow attack the priestess. I have been thinking that for pbp any spells tht require a save could be rolled by the caster. After my PoEE game where there was a lot of toll the dead and sacred flame castings I thought that the player could just add in a 1d20 roll for the save. I think it would save me time from rolling saves then figuring out how that all applies. So from now on (and I'll make this announcement in my other games), please just add in a 1d20 save for any spells like Crown of Madness , that way I have a base and can apply the modifiers making it easier on me in the long run. Thanks

Magic items start to trickle in from this point on in the game and rather than giving you guys a bunch of miscellaneous magical junk if you guys would like to provide a "shopping list" of things you would like for your character, I'll start to work them in in place of some of the default items. I'll still be dishing out some of the default items, as they are there to assist in later levels, so you might not get everything on your Christmas list but I'm hoping to avoid handing out stuff that forces you to alter the concept of your character. A couple of things to keep in mind; - There is absolutely zero chance of getting a +x shield. I find these far too powerful. Other magical effects from shields are still ok. - +x armour I tend to rate higher than the numbers suggest they should be as they are quite powerful and always on - +x weapons, I don't mind quite so much, but I generally prefer other effects; extra d6 fire damage; lights up when...This is something I will have to think on as w...

She could only imagine what the rooms the baron would provide would be like. She had never slept in such luxury before, unless one counted Romeo’s arms… Magdalena shook her head, pushing aside memories of her hasty fiance. He was alive. That is all that mattered. She had given up everything for that. “How long a journey to your village is it?” she asked the villager. “We might yet begin work under cover of darkness, though that would give the goblins the advantage,” she pointed out. I'm still tempted to take my war cleric, more so considering the line up. I'm usually not a fan of clerics because they have always been the party healbot, but with 5e they are much more interesting. Sent from my SM-G900F using TapatalkI nearly went with a heal bot but noticed we lacked a skill based character, which is probably more crucial imo Sent from my [device_name] using EN World mobile app

Ah, I'd forgotten about that. At the risk of derailing the thread slightly, I would run a chase scene like that out of initiative. I won't go into the reasons why - as that WILL derail the thread - but I mention it to highlight my point that the player should be given a choice, not strong armed into a situation like this. The choice was to go into Orc held territory to access a ruin under direct control of a powerful Orc warlord. The consequence was being captured by the forces of the powerful orc warlord. And, yes, I wouldn't have run the chase in initiative, either, I would have narrated the inevitable outcome had the players chose to run at that point.

Crucially, they had the option of fleeing the warband, at least that is how I read this, and trying a different approach. (Go directly to the ruin for examle) They weren't in a "Lay down your weapons or die" situation. I have seen players deliberately get captured as part of their plan. I've never seen them willingly surrender because that was the only way to stay alive. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk Well, orcs get a bonus dash option when closing to an enemy, so, no, they really couldn't flee. The opening encounter distance was about 600 ft. In a headlong chase, the orcs catch them in 20 rounds. The rogue could have kept the distance open, and the monk and barbarian would have made the chase longer, but the other 3 characters were going to be run down in any attempt to flee in less than 2 minutes. And running would have been cowardly, and so surrender terms for the orcs would have been much worse. Admitting you're overmatched is one thing, but running away like a coward...

[OOC]Finnan can't EB until his manacles are off, at least that's what I figured. Thats why I was hoping one of the fightery types would join Thia. [/OOC Why not? Thia cast True Strike (S spell) and now Silence (V,S) with manacles on. I've discuss casting silence in the OOC thread for while now and DM never said I would need the manacles off first. Thia would have snuck back inside if spell casting was still restricted.
