No heir. There are probably some ancillary members of the Imperial family, but the emperor has to be Paladine (God), and when the emperor was killed, so was Paladine. The Queen (his assassin) tried to set herself and the Helveki line on the throne, and that triggered the civil war that broke up the empire. Arideen (what is left of the empire in the mountains) is now ruled by a regency council...

For the Old Ones, think like Celts. Their tribes were pushed to the western fringes of the Empire when the Arideens moved into Essuss and Helveki. Many tribes integrated into imperial society. If your father was a legionnaire, he might be one of them. Others maintained the old ways and exist now mostly in western Essuss and the Ingha Swamp. Many on the island of Gilead are "civilized" Old Ones...

... you want to play, helping you avoid bad surprises and misunderstandings later on. If there’s a big disagreement about the kind of things you want in your history, now’s the time to find out and talk about it. If something is in the Yes column, then during the rest of the game it’s okay to introduce it into the history even if it doesn’t seem like it fits. You’ve all agreed it belongs. If something is in the No column, it’s never okay to bring into the game, no matter what. You’ve all agreed it’s not part of the history. You don't HAVE to end up using something in the YES column during play. It isn't an exhaustive list of the history. It is mostly used to include or ban things that might be expected or not expected in a setting. For example, wizards in a fantasy setting might be expected. In a sci-fi setting, they might not be. So we will now go around and everyone put out one idea for the Palette. Link to the brainstorming document. Players: KahlessNestor Shayuri Archon Basileus FitzTheRuke ART! tglassy

... chunk of time, probably decades or centuries. Describe how your history begins and ends. These are your starting and ending Periods, the bookends of your history. You’ll add more Periods later on, but everything will be between these points. 1) Agree on a short description for each Period, just a few sentences or a paragraph at most, painting a clear picture of what happens during that time. 2) Decide whether each description is Light or Dark, whether what happens during that Period is generally happy or tragic. This is the Tone of each Period. The Tone of the starting and ending Period do not have to match. You can describe either Period first, as you prefer. Sometimes it’s easier to pick Light or Dark for each Period, then see what ideas emerge. Beginning: The sun goes out. An ancient evil awakens. No one knew it existed. Or did they? End: The sun returns. Is all better now... or is it worse? Link to the brainstorming document. Players: KahlessNestor Shayuri Archon Basileus FitzTheRuke ART! tglassy

So that's 3 votes for Sun Goes Out as the beginning of our history. Where things were before is implied in our Big Picture: Civilization had reached a shining pinnacle of Art, Science, and Magic, but then a Stellar Event occurred, and now all the rules have changed. Any other votes Archon Basileus and ART!

THE BIG PICTURE 1. An arcane field of knowledge - long lost and forgotten by most - has resurfaced, throwing a civilization into chaos! 2. Civilisation had reached a shining pinnacle of Art, Science, and Magic, but then a Stellar Event occurred, and now all the rules have changed. 3. A huge spaceship is sent from Earth to colonize a distant world. 4. An ancient empire rises and falls. 5. In the darkest recesses of space, the whispering dreams of a sleeping entity call out. A wise but stagnant empire answers the call, hoping to serve the entity in exchange for salvation from inevitable destruction. 6. A great civilization discovers an ancient secret whose power both threatens the civilization and holds the key to its salvation. I will throw my votes in for 1, 2, and 3. So we don't have a genre picked out yet, right? No genre picked out yet. So we all pitch a premise and one of them gets picked? We pitch as many premises as we want, and then we choose one, yes. So if you have more ideas, feel free. If you have the PDF, there are some history seeds listed, too. THE BIG PICTURE An arcane field of knowledge - long lost and forgotten by most - has resurfaced, throwing a civilization into chaos! ...you want to keep your cool ideas close to your vest until you use them. If the rest of us know what you’re going to do ahead of time, it’s not as interesting. First, we want to brainstorm a simple overview of the history we want to play. If you were looking in a history book, this would be the one line that summarizes what happens, but leaves out all the details. It should be no more than a single sentence. Some examples: An ancient empire rises and falls. Cavemen at the dawn of time found the first civilization. Mankind leaves the sick Earth behind and spreads out to the stars. Pick something big. We want a lot of time and space to work with. Don’t worry if your idea seems too simple or uninteresting. That’s normal at this stage. Fleshing out the interesting details is what the rest of the game is all about. So let’s start pitching some ideas. You can reply here and I will keep a doc as well that I will share with you all. I'm interested. Would we have to buy something? I'm not familiar with Microscope or how it works. I've created many worlds, though, and I enjoy collaborations where you just go with whatever everyone else says - "yes... and" appeals to me. Okay, that's three players and a DM interested. I think we can swing with that. You won't have to buy anything. I have the book. Mostly we just need something to take the place of the index cards. I've seen Adam Kobel run it on Roll20, but a Google Spreadsheet might work. Here is who I have: @Shayuri, @Archon Basileus, @FitzTheRuke. And one person interested for when the actual campaign starts. One thing we might need to determine is how long we want the Microscope part to go. It can go on as long as we wish. The more rounds it goes, the more history we develop. I know PBP can take a while. I imagine the Microscope part would take several months. We could even go a year. Depends on how much detail we want to develop. Anything not done during the Microscope game will have to be built by me as the DM. EDIT: We could also just play it by ear and stop when we think we have enough.

We just have Shayuri and Archon Basileus Ideally I would like two more, so we would have a full party when we started playing the actual RPG game. Microscope works best with 3-5 players (I would be a player in that).

Archon Basileus, Arduniel teleports to T13 about 30' in the air +/- 1 square in any direction [roll0] leaving him in S14. From there he casts his magic missiles as described earlier. Thank you for using Smoke tattoo, I should remember to mention it every round, not just at the begining of combat. I cannot quicken another script. I should also mention that Arduniel feels every Transmutation and Necromancy (tattoos) spell around himself and automatically counters dispel magic targeted at him (ring of counterspells)

He drops the weapon, dissatisfied and ashamed. the others retreat, but they do not relinquish the gnome. "We can't risk it, oh Dragon. Someone sold us out. The camp's in chaos!" - the Firbolg answers. "We'll keep them under watch, but we fear we've been betrayed. And trial won't do. How many lies can be woven by the underworld sidhe?" - clearly they fear the dark elves' influence up above. [The situation's under control and no one would dare disobey now... Even in Moss' absence.] "That is true, good fey people. But killing your own for the dark ones will accomplish nothing. Keep them isolated, but don't harm them until we can speak with them. Both dark elves look aghast at the revelation. The woman steps forward, holding back a mixture of surprise and sheer hate. Most Drow had been brainwashed into obedience, after all. "We've heard of Vaiyune's shame, and how it led others to follow! We considered it impossible to a fugitive to survive beyond our own cities, above the roots of the land... And yet, here you are." - she approaches, hostility and admiration clashing within. Moss snarls as she attempts to move, tensing. "Stop." Gathering herself and moved by Bruekk's words, she listens to Moss intently. "Very well. Let us face trial. But we ask for proper judges. Grant us this, small dragon: that your tribe will place judgment upon us. We of the Dark would only accept judgment from our fellow denizens. Besides..." - she looks around once more. Little dragon snarls, wings starting to come down to propel him forward, but he digs his claws into the ground and holds as the lance of the woman hits the ground. He is still tense on all fours, turns only his head toward the male. "Once more, we are accused of injustice." - the man retorts, glancing at Alice. "But we were plundered this time around. Why are our incursions so much worse than yours? "Because you come out with an army, kill and enslave, torture and steal? People of the surface aren't one people and those who venture into The Dark are foolhardy, overconfident fools who only rarely return with anything worthwhile. You, on the other hand, come out, leaving trail of blood and destroyed lives." "Or, if it pleases you, kill us! No one asked for mercy. Strength does not allow such a thing. The winner takes the spoils. The strong leads and ravages. The weak suffers. Such is the way of life, cruel as it may be." - he looks the Darkest Knight in the eyes as he proclaims. "Why don...

MARIUS As the process happens, a final voice rises, ringing within the confines of his mind. "You were willing to sacrifice, not to kill. How worthy you are! We are glad to serve. You are one with us. Remember well. Carry our legacy. Use our power to greater deeds. We tried. We failed. But you shall do it in our name. Remember us, for you are the last of Cartagula from now on." - with that, the voice vanishes, as the protection granted by the souls. Marius stops as the voices arise in his mind. He simply nods at the final proclamation and (maybe to weird looks from his companions) says "I accept. You wil be remembered." As he shakes off the temporary fugue the monk focuses on Shayuri. "We still didn't agree on informing Dram about all of this. Can you imagine untold evil he could do with the soldiers enhanced this way? And he WOULD use the creature, make no mistake. THULWAR Under closer inspection, the area shows a most peculiar composition. Thulwar can see the outlines of a nearby statue, rustic and covered in spiral lines, as well as several distinct patterns. The same engravings cover the floor as well, as if placed there to build a trail of sorts. Thulwar can feel the distinct textures under his feet, beneath the thick soles of his shoes. The trails, marked on the floor, might serve as guiding lines through the darkness, at least for anyone familiarized with the traces carved into the stone. As the duo contemplates the situation, a small shard of shining material becomes apparent, some ten feet beyond. It seems to be a piece of blade, left there after some confrontation - recent, by the looks of it. Some sort of fight has happened in here, but the signs left behind suggest ambushes and silent strikes instead of open attacks. No blood, no traces of a bigger charge, only that blade shard, nothing more... Thulwar pays attention to the runes first and...

And that is something I can respect" - she turns to the Firbolg, as if to allow him to talk. "The humans are perfectly capable of swearing..." - he says in a rough tone. "They're just unwilling. Good. That's our way as well. A sworn is sacred, but it follows the heart." "I would be unwilling too if the task could take half my life to finish it especially to unfamiliar people. "One returns to Palatine first." - Ajax' mocking tone is evident. "I'd pay to see that... A prince at the Waterworks. But then again... If Ravenblade is the one I think, she'd never be close to a prince..." - he finishes his sentence with a strong hint of distrust. A deep, unsettling chuckle comes from the dragonborn prince. "The Ravenblade should not have come close, no. This one's honor and the bird's heart are one and the same, and this one will return home with both." The strange speech pattern makes it difficult to know for certain what Aanzu means, but he says it with conviction. Ulisses tries to rehearse an explanation for his words in vain. The only profitable thing he can say borders the obvious. "She's no longer human, your highness. She's like a shapeshifter. And she's probably not alone, now." - he seems pensive for a while. "Did she ask for anything, if... I may ask?" Aanzu nods satisfied, then points towards Poe, Lyllie's raven familiar who is now amusing itself with string...

[No worries, @industrygothica! I got your back! You went for four shillelaghs, two mage hands and your wolf transmutation. How could I forget the hands... I felt like I was playing a scene from the apparition - the one with the dibuk crawling out of the girl's throat, in particular... :p] Haha.. I'm glad my spell use left an impression! But that wasn't Mage Hand; it was Chill Touch. That and Shillelagh are both cantrips, so they wouldn't have counted against my spell slots. I regain Wild Shape after a short rest, so that should be good as well. So... if that was it then she should be good, shouldn't she? Maybe my super-stingy spell slot conservation OCD is finally paying off! :) -IG

While arranging a resting area, Ulisses takes upon himself to present an answer. "I can't speak for the second name, your highness. But the first one..." - he considers for a second - "...I am quite sure I've seen it somewhere in the old records. If the names match, Mordayne was one of the volunteers for genetic recombination before the incident that isolated Mount Amberilan from the rest of the world." - he finishes improvising a bed with foam remnants and stuffing from a nearby drywall. "Mind if I ask where have you heard it?" - he asks, polite and curious. Aanzu opens his eyes and looks at Ulisses. For a moment or two he remains silent, then he speaks. "The bird Mordayne offered this one help, and has shown helpful to the lizards. This one is not sure of her intentions yet," the prince says, more open than he himself had expected to be. Perhaps it's that this soldier, unlike his brethren, has not shown Aanzu any more agression than necessary. "What is this 'generic combination' the lady...

    - he considers his own words for a moment, smiles a sad smile, and continues. "But you lived. As I believed, you lived, you survived. It's only fair that, in due time, you judge our actions, and pass the sentence upon our lives. I, for one, would be relieved to pay the price." Lyllie approaches the man as he hangs his head and finishes his words. She reaches up, places a gentle hand upon his cheek and guides him closer to her. She speaks softly into his ear... "And pay you shall..." She lets the whisper hang in the air, and the conversation is over.

"Here, let me..." - away from the others, the captain offers to cleanse the weapon with a quick charge from his crossbow. "Now, tell me, how are things outside these days. I take it that the Cthon never left confinement, since you didn't know of its' existence. Good. I fear what it would do, if left unchained upon a world filled with carbon-based life." - he looks at Lyllie, trying to find the answer to his own question. "Miss..." - he calls out to her. "How..." - he seems to choke on the question, unable to formulate it. It's obvious to both Harfik and Lyllie that he wants to know what happened to her. Odds are he already knows. He straights his body. "Tell me what happened. Tell me of outside. Please." - he says, with a surly face. "We felt the earthquake and you destroyed centuries of defensive works and works of art. But yes, while there were dead, it is less than you probably think. "Less than what you think?" Lyllie finally ends her silence, her frustration and anger on the verge bo...

The captain looks pensive for a few seconds. Soon, though, Thulwar himself realizes he's startled and speechless. The captain runs his eyes through Thulwar, Harfik, Aanzu, and then back to Lyllie and Icosa. "We thought it to be destroyed... There ARE survivors, then!" - he rises an eyebrow, a strange sense of awareness rising within him. "As for the princes realm, it must be on another continental mass, I assume, maybe on another hemisphere entirely..." "We felt the earthquake and you destroyed centuries of defensive works and works of art. But yes, while there were dead, it is less than you probably think. We know about earthquakes and how to build for them. I'm guessing drow and duergar are similarly affected, but I don't think you will receive any emissaries except in form of raiding parties. However, I am here to assure my people that you will not repeat this." The captain gives Thulwar a curious, suspicious look. "Sentient illusion... What, like a homid girl? I mean..." - he looks for ...
