Man is placed on sex offenders register and will be excluded from all sorts of stuff as a result if they demand a DBS check. It's a pretty lousy analogy. Thanks. Had to google DBS check. Keep on forgetting about criminal record ruining future employment opportunities once out of prison. That's what happens when you don't think things through properly.

  • 09:08 AM - Steven Barker quoted ajevans in post Some quick questions
I think I know the answers to these. I'm just an ordinary player though, so take my assessments with an appropriate grain of salt. 1. Range. What's the units? I'm assuming it's in grid squares? Yes, the usual range unit is 5' squares. Some effects (such as spells) will describe ranges in feet, so you may need to translate back and forth in some situations. 2. How do you identify what weapons are meant to be used 2-handed or 1-handed? Is it just creative licence? This isn't described at all well. Large sized weapons always need two hands. As far as I can tell, that's the only explicitly stated rule. I'm pretty sure some Medium sized weapons (probably including all medium ranged weapons) are intended to be used with two hands, but there doesn't seem to be anything in the rules saying so. 3. Luck. Do you add luck dice before or after a roll? e.g. 'Oops I failed my roll, I'll add a luck die' or 'I really need to make this roll so I'll add a luck die first?' You're supposed to ...

  • 01:51 PM - Nagol quoted ajevans in post Burning Questions: What's the Worst Thing a DM Can Do?
I think we may be talking at cross purposes. By fudging I mean the DM rolling the dice then pretending a different result was rolled. So do I. Lying to me as a player is worse than saying "I think this would be more fun than what I rolled".
  • 12:44 PM - Nagol quoted ajevans in post Burning Questions: What's the Worst Thing a DM Can Do?
Some DM's fudge dice rolls, right or wrong is a different argument, however the DM letting it become apparent that they are fudging dice rolls is the worse thing! If a DM is fudging, I find it much better to be done in the open with the players in the know than trying to perform it surreptitiously

  • 09:37 AM - Zak S quoted ajevans in post Congratulations to 2018's ENnie Award Winners!
Congratulations to all the winners. There is however one product that stands out from the rest and makes me scratch my chin. Zweihander, best game? Better than Blades in the Dark, Delta Green, and Red Markets? Ditto for best product. I've seen lots of people who like post-Forge games talk up Blades and Red Markets--though often while saying they regret they can't find anyone to play with, while I've seen way more discussion of people actually using Zweihander. Many indie games are disproportionately discussed online because they emerged from online discussion scenes whereas Zweihander's fanbase is anyone who liked old Warhammer and just wanted it cleaned up a little and modernized--a way bigger group.

I don't see it as offensive just poorly worded. If you prefer crunchy games, FATE isn't going to suit your mindset, which largely comes down to taste not mental ability. That would be fair enough, but it's only one step on from 'mentality' to discussing the infamous 'brain damage' (which is not something we we should want to discuss). People's tastes are always going to be different, but we don't have to attribute this towards anything to do with mental qualities. Indeed, I generally prefer rules light games, but that still doesn't mean I'm predetermined to like particular systems, regardless.

  • 01:23 PM - James Gray1 quoted ajevans in post The Witcher Cover, Art, Info & Q&A Announced!
Can't help feel that being a Witcher is the point of this game, all over classes sounds completely secondary. It depends, I suppose, on the sort of game you are playing and the GM. Certainly, you could all play witchers with different focuses, but having a craftsman in the party will be useful when you need a specific kind of weapon to deal with a monster and having a doctor in the party will help when you're bleeding out. Each class is built to have unique and useful traits in the world.

  • 08:38 AM - Jhaelen quoted ajevans in post The Expanse RPG by Green Ronan
So really not sure where this d20 variant thing is coming from.Well, the article mentions, it'll be using the same system as the Blue Rose RPG. And the wikipedia article about the Blue Rose RPG says: The game uses a derivative of the D20 system, called True20. Blue Rose won the Gen Con ENWorld Roleplaying Silver Medal for Best Rules in 2005.[1] Green Ronin subsequently released True20 as a separate system without a setting and genre neutral. Unfortunately, that's where I stopped reading. Because the next sentence says: In early 2015 Green Ronin President Chris Pramas announced the company would Kickstart a new edition of the game using the Adventure Game Engine, the same ruleset used in the Dragon Age tabletop RPG.[3] So, it was a misunderstanding. The AGE system uses 3d6 and when you roll doubles you gain stunt points to use on some kind of maneuver. And that's pretty much all I know about the system :-P

I'm confused. Are people getting upset over confirmed rules or rumours? I've re-read what's officially out there and it appears to be the latter. Hear/read a rumour, extrapolate it to mean something they don't like and then get upset over it. Make sure you stay out of Paizo's Pathfinder 2 preview threads, the amount of guesswork induced rage is amazing! ;)

There is no rumour, it is a preview, the only extrapolation has been how the success levels are calculated because the preview didn't show it.

Unfortunately it seems C7 is keeping clunky degrees of success, pesky -10 and +10 bonuses and generally the same level of fidliness as v2.

As I mentioned earlier, while the first read gave me a clear idea what the system was, from reading all the comments here it made me realize that I couldn't be certain that my read is the "correct" one. There is more uncertainty about how the system works exactly than it seemed at first light. So we'll have to wait and see.

  • 06:25 PM - Hriston quoted ajevans in post What levelling up rules do you use?
Hriston, okay I see you what you are saying but interpret the rules differently from you, otherwise let's say you found 200,000GP you would have enough XP to gain multiple levels, riding roughshod over Gygax's fretting over PCs being able to advance several levels in one go. Yes, in the event of a Monty Haul DM, a level 1 thief could possibly have enough XP to advance to level 10. However, the thief would not be eligible to gain any additional XP until such time as the training for each level in between was completed and paid for. That you see this as a problem and have interpreted the rules in such a way as to address the problem doesn't justify labeling your interpretation as RAW. I think either is a valid interpretation given the wording. Whether valid or not, it's your interpretation, while what is written in the book is something else. In your case then, please interpret the poll as the following: Option1: As you see RAW Option2: (Doesn't apply per your interpretation) Option3: Re...

So, lets say I'm a Thief at 1237XP and I get given 500XP by the DM. As RAW, my XP goes up to 1251 and stays there until I get trained up to Level 2. No. According to the RAW, your XP would go up to 1737 and would stay there until you complete your level 2 training. Here's the relevant passage from page 86 of the DMG: Under no circumstance can a character gain additional experience points by any means until he or she actually acquires the higher level through the required training/study course. Thus, a character who successfully adventures and gains experience points which not only equal a new level but are almost sufficient to gain yet a second such level, cannot opt to forego the period of training and study necessary to go up a level in favor of gaining a few more points and training and studying for two levels at once. ONCE A CHARACTER HAS POINTS WHICH ARE EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN THE MINIMUM NUMBER NECESSARY TO MOVE UPWARDS IN EXPERIENCE LEVEL, NO FURTHER EXPERIENCE POINTS CAN BE GAINED...
