Dragon Age: Inquisition reminded me a lit of 4e with all the cool down powers. That pretty much turned me off of that video game.

I havent read every post so I apologize if my post is redundant. I agree with using the basic rules. Print out copies if you can. I'm leaning more toward pregens to simplify things. I dont think the majority of the kids will care but you will have some who are truly interested in customizing their own character. I would also bring in some helpers like you suggested with the high school kids who...

I bought 4e when it launched. I talked my non gamer friends into giving it a go. I did my best but no one really dug it. I'm sure I was running it wrong. I was still in the mind frame of 2e and 3e. I never played mmo's so I didnt understand that roles where present. I just let people play what they wanted but it was so different from what I was use to. It's not a bad game by any means but it's...

  • 07:08 PM - Dethangels Shadow quoted MockingBird in post The Final Announcement from The Descent Live Stream: Eberron Hardcover
Would have rather had Planescape or at the least an updated full on Realms book. Not a fan of this setting but I'm happy for those that wanted it. Yeah, disappointing, but at least we're getting off of the Prime Material plane for a bit.

Kinda surprised 4e is leading. Maybe now that it isn't the D&D more people are open to it? I picked 2e cause it was my first D&D game. I remember getting the FR box set and looking at the maps and all the possibilities that filled my head. I miss setting box sets. I'm surpised, too, as there always seemed to be a bias against 4e on these forums.

Kinda surprised 4e is leading. Maybe now that it isn't the D&D more people are open to it? This is a case of statistics lying to you. At the moment 4e has 38 votes. All others combined = 106 votes. Wich means that 76.some % of us reject 4e. 4e: Not the most popular version.
  • 08:19 PM - Abstruse quoted MockingBird in post The New Dungeons & Dragons Storyline for 2019 Leaked Ahead of Live Stream
I dont know why but I am highly doubtful it's going to be a setting book. I want to be wrong though. It's more based on how you define "setting book". WotC hasn't been doing actual setting books. They've all been backdoor setting books, like Curse of Strahd for Ravenloft, hiding the setting within an adventure. My guess is it'll be an adventure for levels 14-20 completing the "story" from Descent into Avernus that focuses on the planes with a detailed description of Sigil and rules for planar travels and adventures. Still have a few hours before we find out for sure... Frankly, I'm more invested in trying to figure out when the announcement will be since there's not a clear-cut slot on the schedule. There's a concert starting in about 45 minutes and, based on the number of musicians, that'll be going for several hours. Right now, the main channel isn't even live and I can't see them announcing the new big book on their equivalent of ESPN-3.

They counted the Acquisitions book as part of the yearly releases? Bummer. Thanks for clearing that up for me though! The Aquistions Inc book was announced long before the stream
  • 03:37 PM - GarrettKP quoted MockingBird in post The New Dungeons & Dragons Storyline for 2019 Leaked Ahead of Live Stream
How do know its going to be a setting book? Yall seem pretty certain just wondering what news I missed. Nathan Stewart revealed during a live stream that this year we would be getting a new Setting Book. With 3 books already confirmed (Saltmarsh, Acquisitions Inc, and Avernus) it seems more than certain the last book will be the setting book, unless they decided to do 5 books this year.

  • 06:10 AM - Quickleaf quoted MockingBird in post [SPOILERS] Enhancing Tomb of Annihilation
Tonight we descend into Omu. Really not sure when to pull out King of Feathers. They are 5th level and I feel I need to get them leveled up to 6 fairly quickly. I'm excited for them to explore the ruins for puzzle cubes. I hope I can role play Nsi the way I have him in my head. Here are my notes on Ras Nsi which helped me get a better feel for his character.

  • 06:15 PM - billd91 quoted MockingBird in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
This is interesting. I feel like it's a smart move for sure. Hopefully we will eventually get a Rise of the Runelords conversion. Monster books might be a good way to go about it. Get people to buy their PDFs or other AP materials, then get them to buy the 5e monster supplement for it to handle most of the stat blocks.

  • 08:13 PM - jeremypowell quoted MockingBird in post Heroes of Baldur's Gate is a D&D Adventure From Bioware's Baldur's Gate Designer
Yeah this is what I was asking. Since it takes place in the Time of Troubles. I'm not real familiar with the old FR modules so any insight or recommendations would be awesome. Heroes of Baldur's Gate takes place a decade after the Time of Troubles, not during it. You're not the first to make this mistake, though. This book, set almost 125 years in the "past" from the current Forgotten Realms year, was trumpeted as "a new supplement from around the time of the Time of Troubles." In a sense, the Time of Troubles is the ur-event for the whole Baldur's Gate series; that's when (30-year-old spoiler warning) Bhaal died. Time of Troubles: summer 1358 DR. Heroes of Badur's Gate: 1368-1369 DR.

  • 12:24 PM - CapnZapp quoted MockingBird in post Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?
Why?The only conversion system that really works in all cases is this: 1. Look at your old-system character sheet. 2. On a blank paper using basic English only, write down what the character can do. Use no numbers and no game terms. Focus on what the character actually does most of the time, and not the things it can theoretically do but usually doesn't. 3. Burn the old character sheet. 4. Create a brand new character in the new system, using the plain-English description from step 2 to guide you. 5. Done! Every attempt to map specific game mechanisms and numbers from one system to another is bound to fail eventually, and is likely so cluttery and complex all it accomplishes is giving off a veneer of accuracy while still not giving acceptable results half the time. Even for relatively close systems, like AD&D to Pathfinder, or d20 to 5E for example. It's not worth it. Just go with my system instead. It has the benefit of always working, no matter which systems are involved!

  • 06:22 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted MockingBird in post What Would You Want from PF2?
Let's see, I would like something in between PF1e and 5e but I'm not entirely sure I would even leave 5e at this time or the near future. I'd really like 5e compatible APs and setting book honestly. My relationship with PF1e was player only. My casual style of DMing doesnt mesh well with PF/3.5 or 4e. While 4e was perfect for my casual style of DMing (Iíve had to learn to do prep beyond story and some tables for quick encounter building in 5e, bc I just canít wing it like I did in 4e), I agree overall. Iíd be interested in PF2 if it had all the customization of options and abilities of PF1 or 4e, with the simple math of 5e, and straightforward monster and encounter building systems and guidelines. Give me a 60 item weapon list, 30 item armor list, 5 types of shields, 20 classes, even more Archetypes that fit into the system more like 4e Themes/Paragon Paths (with some that simply further specialize your class or create a pseudo-multiclass, while others stand alone thematically as a narrative ...

  • 02:20 AM - Kurviak quoted MockingBird in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
Does Paizo see them selves as WOTC's equal? Did the short tenure at #1 inflate an ego? How do these questions play into the decision not to produce 5e material? Does it even play a role? Based on the things Iíve read from Paizoís staff they are aware that they are way smaller than WotC and their business model takes that in consideration. At least thatís what I get from the comments IĒve read.

  • 09:18 AM - Morrus quoted MockingBird in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
I dont understand why they havent. 5e has been out for what 5 yrs now? Unless theres some unspoken bad blood between the companies. Why wouldn't a company want to resell their back catalog of adventures? If anything a Runelords conversion would be awesome. I have zero insight into their decision making process, or anything else, but I suspect that if they did that their core rulebook sales would suffer. You could ask why doesn't Apple sell Android products? Because it would erode their own brand.

I'd be happy if they just sold a conversion guide for the already printed hardback version. If you know why Pathfinder exists at all then you can assume Paizoís management should not be very fond of WotC

  • 02:31 AM - Kurviak quoted MockingBird in post Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?
Can someone explain how you can do more with skills in PF2e compared to the same skills in 5e? On initial thought I cant see it. Acrobatics is acrobatics is acrobatics. Athletics is a bit of general term that could cover a multitude of things. In my opinion the creativity falls on the players and DM to see it and make sense of it. You dont really need a hard and fast rule to say you can only do activity A with skill A. This is something I see complained about often here but I cant wrap my head around it being an issue. In my opinion your character is only as unique as you Invision him/her to be. For example, with a epic level of acrobatics you could fall from kilometers of height and landing safely

  • 10:06 PM - pauldanieljohnson quoted MockingBird in post Chinese Government Burns Cthulhu RPG Print Run
Is this company U.S. based? If so then why not give business to American printers. I understand that costs was figured into the decision. This thought process is hurting the U.S. if every business decided to keep business inside the U.S. when it comes to production then eventually the costs would be competitive. I for one would pay a bit more knowing that fact. Likely because the audience comprises more than just Americans. True, some Americans (perhaps a majority, perhaps a minority) would be willing to pay more for a book if it was printed in their country, but tell someone from England, Canada, or Upper Zambootyland to pay more for a Made in the USA product and you won't get much enthusiasm.

  • 02:25 PM - Nilbog quoted MockingBird in post Pathfinder 2E or Pathfinder 1E?
I would most certainly buy a Rise of the Runelords 5e hardback. I've always wanted to run that AP but I refuse to DM 3.5 or PF. I would love for Paizo to convert their AP's to 5e. I'm running a Runelords campaign in 5e now, and while the conversion work isn't the hardest, it would still save me so much time if it'd been done officially

  • 01:13 PM - Bagpuss quoted MockingBird in post Waterdeep: Dragon Heist - Which Season is the Best Story Arc? [Spoilers]
I doubt I ever run this adventure. I dont think my players would stay focused on a combat light adventure, but I could be wrong. Having the just read the few chapters I wouldn't say it was combat light, while there is certainly investigation it isn't without the physical conflict. Just your players might want to think twice about deadly force on some occasions as the penalties for murder even with justification are pretty severe (exile/3 hard labour), but assault is much lighter (a tenday, flogging or a fine). However a lot of the time they will be able to plead self defense, just if they keep leaving blood on the streets they might get a reputation with the City Watch. They certainly should pick a fight with the Watch, even if they think they can win. Regardless I'll more than likely buy it because it has peaked my curiosity and interest. Should be a good read and source material for Waterdeep when they visit. Yeah there is about 25 pages of Volo's Waterdeep Enchiridion, which covers things l...

Oh okay...I'm tracking now. Sorry Nah, no worries: it was kind of subtle at the time, but the way Nathan Stewart thoughtfully said his bit about the Dragonlance made me take notice. It definitely felt like they were specifically holding something back about the setting.
