But by the same logic, with armor increasing AC and STR adding to bonus to hit, it's "absurd to rationalize powering through full armor on every one of them without any accuracy, and therefore it's very hard to buy that being strong will add to your attack rolls on EVERYTHING". No matter how accurate I am with a rapier that has no affect at all on my chance to attack with a longsword, and no...

I think that would need to be a lot stronger, right now it's a bit of a trap option. First, who knows if it will still be alive to take advantage of it - your PC isn't the only one dishing out damage. Second, denying it actions by killing it sooner is stronger then killing it later. Third, +INT extra damage, if you hit, on two attacks, is about + 1.3 * INT expected damage with the...

Every "replace attack stat" has limitations. Finesse is only on a subset of weapons, none heavy/two-handed. Shillelagh only works on clubs and quarterstaves. Warlock Hexblade only works on non-two handed weapons that you can touch at the end of a long rest which excludes all spell-created blades like Shadow Blade. This applies to all weapons, melee and ranged. It works with all spell...

If you were running a published adventure, would you be fine with players reading that adventure and learning plot twists, NPC motivations, and the like? Without changing it - the question here is about player knowledge. I personally would not, and have had this come up before when I was a player years ago (AD&D 2nd era). I was very angry at another player who read the module and his...

I created a setting and one of the defining points was that it's planar boundaries were thin and various deities had used this land over the age to deliver their faithful from other material planes where they were going to be wiped out. Both PC races but also intelligent monster ones. And there were things like two different, geographically separated orcs who had completely different traditions...

I'm very much with both parts of what Iserith says. First is that they aren't epic, but they are a resource drain and D&D is balanced around those. But more importantly, they aren't just bags of HPs to defeat. They have a reason they are there and doing things. Maybe they see the PCs and run away to get more goblins and now it's a running chase where keeping them quiet and killing them...

I'm going to work this from both sides. Should a player have access at the table to the PHB for information about their character? I think we can all say this is yes. Should a player have access at the table to the adventure the DM is running? I think that we'll also get the consensus the answer is no. So we have valid cases on both sides, and a lot of gray in the middle about player...

The swamp is dense enough that with average stealth (DC 10) you could remain hidden from baseline lizardfolk if you were 60+ feet behind them. If they hunting party becomes suspicious, 100 feet is a better distance.

I could have written that clearer. What I meant was that getting reduced by a vampire bite to 0 max HPs kills you. But having 0 max HPs from a vampire bite at a later point does not. There is no auto-kill at the later point just because you are at 0 max HPs, even if it had at a previous point been killed by a vampire. The "kill when reducing to 0 max HPs" from a vampire's bite is an effect...

Darkvision treats darkness as dim light and shades of grey. If the contrast was such that a human could read it in dim light, then yes. Assuming it's not some weird color choices that make the shades of grey into one of those eye-doctor colorblind tests. So it comes down to the definition of dim light. The SRD (which matches the PHB) has this to say: So if it's small cramped...

No, your summary is off the mark. What I had said was that the PHB points out what you need to do and not do, but that even if you do those ("finish it") you still won't get any benefit from it under certain circumstances such as doing more than one in a 24 hour period or starting it without at least 1 HP. This is a new and interesting route to explore. I am unaware of specific rules on...

Sure I allow double Dash in those cases. It's a heroic game of fireballs and dragons - this seems an odd hill to head towards realism on. It fits both RAW and RAF. And considering double actions already exist with things like action surge, it also seems to fit RAI. Along those lines, the rogue / fighter that wants to Action surge to get in Dash-Dash-Dash for one round can go for it.

Yeah, it's very build and table dependent what is "better", and even there "better" is usually defined within a limited number of pillars of play (such as just combat). I really do pick both myself. My last two characters that leveled up were one feat and one was +2 CHR (for a bard, looking for more Bardic Inspiration uses as well as the other benefits).

Agreed, it's contrived. When I started writing it one of my goals was trying to show that people still considered a long rest to occur at 0 HPs if a detriment happened. There are still people disagreeing that the long rest happens in the first place. From there is became a great way to kill too birds with one stone by including both a benefit and a detriment. This is an strong point,...

Incorrect. You die if a vampire bite reduces your max HPs to 0. There is no ongoing effect. There is nothing in the description of the vampire's bite to distinguish between someone who remained alive, and someone who was brought back. Absolutely. That is completely clear in the PHB. It's not that you can't take a long rest, it's that you don't gain those benefits from it. That a long rest can be taken even at 0 HPs isn't a question if you read the PHB.

You are conflating the specifically laid out benefits of a long rest, with a benefit that happens because a long rest has passed. They are not the same. The benefits of a long rest are clearly laid out in the PHB on page 186. The vampire's bite is not part of that. Rather the description of the max HP reduction for the vampire has a condition for when it returns. "The reduction lasts...

Except that regaining the maximum HPs is not a function of a benefit of a long rest (which requires 1 HP), rather it's the function of the Vampire's Bite where they come back after a long rest is taken. You can definitely take a long rest, even if you don't gain benefits due to having less than 1 HP.

There are a few circumstances where it could also mean death - disintegrate, took massive damage, etc. But those are exceptions - 0 HP is not death. Not unless one of the characters gives up all of their actions. Try you and a friend (or several) walking down a street while each doing something. It does not require that everybody but one give up all of their actions to walk in a line. See also: marching band. (Taking an action for CHR (Perform).)

One concept from an earlier edition of D&D was specific overrides general. If that's the case, the specific of the spell returning at 1 HP should overcome the general rule that HPs can not exceed max HPs.

WaterRabbit - I do agree with your points. I just wanted to point out that XCom is a lot like D&D 4e in having a lot of "this exact square vs. that square" in terms of positioning, cover, line of sight and effects. It needs a high level of precise, tactical control even if the system is less complex. I'm not saying this to refute your point, just mentioning that example has some differences...

PoE2 changed the spell system from the original PoE to all spells refreshing after each combat, so it wasn't a problem if the AI burned through spells in an encounter. The original PoE had spells recover on a (long) rest like D&D, and there real time with AI was an issue - either you let the AI use them and would burn through them quickly, or you didn't in which case it was effectively turn...

In PoE, I found that if I let the AI use limited resources like spells, they would use them up in ways I disagreed with. If I didn't let the AI use limited spells (and the like), then easy/trivial...

If you were an acolyte, you learned Religion. Some have been called to their gods without having gone through a formal process with a church. They may be blessedly devout without being a student of comparative religion. A sage...

There is, and hard-coding skills actually make characters less on target. Having mandatory skills to flavor the character "appropriately" does the exact opposite in actual play. Right now you get your background skills and choice of other appropriate skills. However, if you have overlap, you can then pick any skill. Let me repeat that: a required skill, going with class-thematic...

My first thought it that you can have those skills already from a background. The rule in the PHB about duplicate skills between background and class is that you can pick any skill. So a required skill in a class actually means that you can pick ANY skill instead of just skills on the class list. Meaning that required skills can actually dilute having appropriate skills by allowing off-list...

So, for example, every elf in a martial class (and some others) deserves a freebie because their elven weapon training overlaps? If I multiclass into a class that grants armor/weapon proficiencies (all but sorcerer & wizard), should I be expecting a "make-up" bennie for already having them? It's not the player's place to argue rules interpretations with the DM like a lawyer making a case to a judge or jury. The 5e DM's role is to interpret (and change and add to and overrule and outright ignore and change his mind about later) the rules as he sees fit, it's the "DM Empowerment" feature of 5e. I've played in an RPG where the players knew no rules and the DM, jmucchiello , adjudicated everything. It was a lot of fun, but there was trust and consistency from him. In an RPG with written rules, that's a common foundation for everyone playing the game, with the DM both as arbiter and custodian of the rules. If there is ambiguity, like in this case, it's up to the DM to decided how to run it. And if there is no ambiguity but the DM wants to run it otherwise, they can do that as well as a house rule. However, it's the shared understanding of the rules that allows things to flow smoothly. If different people in the group interpret a rule differently, there should be a discussion. Yes, the DM has final say, but I've made mistakes running before and had the correct rule pointed out to me. And there have been ambiguous things (like this spell) that players have convinced me are either fine or cooler run a way different than my default would have been. Also, if the DM runs a rule one way in one circumstance and another way at a different time, the ...

  • 07:38 PM - Neonchameleon mentioned jmucchiello in post Article: Balancing Instant Death
Conversely, the relative inability of nonspellcasters to behead, knock out, or otherwise one-shot an opponent is an issue. That's where the balance issue lies if any. Vorpal swords and quivering palm just aren't enough. There need to be ways for characters (particularly those skilled in martial arts) to cause instant death or disablement and bypass the hit point system. Implement that well (not easy to do) and the problem is solved. I'd agree with this. In fact I'd go so far as to say that if instant death exists in a system at all it should be the function of (a) non-casters or (b) natural attacks like the Medusa. jmucchiello, how many fights per day did you have? You say "But the other 9 in 10 combats, he made the save or the wizard no longer had THAT spell any more." - given that a fifth level specialist wizard can easily have three third level spells, four second level, and five first level, that's a dozen substantial spells. I'll be generous and assume only the third level spells are used as fight enders. That's still three major fights. Are you seriously telling me that your PCs get through thirty fights per day? Because that is what you are implying. At 9th level, it's a potential 22 substantive spells per day (with seven of fourth or fifth level) - the fighters arms are going to get tired at that rate.

...A piece of common wisdom I see here is to recruit large groups... I have found that the same few people seem to respond to all requests despite the number of available members on this site. I have also observed that unless the offer is from 5e or PF it will get no traffic. ...And in PBP, almost every day is a "session" - it's a game you devote a few minutes every day instead of a big session every week or 2... The application of play has to be adjusted to the PbP setting. This is the burden of the GM / DM. In video game versions like Neverwinter Nights, bingers can elevate characters 10 levels or more in a single sitting, even with the mechanics changed to award about 1% of the usual XP of a table-top session. In a PbP, I have found that the offer needs to be increased. I tend to offer XP once a week or once every ten posts, depending on the participation of players. This seems to fix the sigma that characters are never going to advance since a single combat can take more than a week to com...

No, it doesn't say you can't put it in the bank. If it did, no one would use KS. You are allowed to make a profit. Profits go in the bank. It literally says that all funds need to go fully into producing the project in question: sure, that can include a salary for your own time, which is why people need to convince pledgers they are going to use the resources wisely, rather than pocket the money and run. Nothing in the Kickstarter pledge is "profit," it is all contractually obligated to be used in producing something. Profit comes later.

I didn't say they were going to pocket anything. They constantly say every dollar goes to the animation budget. I was just refuting the idea that money raised using KS cannot go into the bank. According to Kickstarter, it can't. Realistically, sure, people can do all sorts of scummy things.
  • 02:17 PM - Parmandur quoted jmucchiello in post Critical Role's Kickstarter Breaks $1,000,000 In About An Hour!
There is nothing in there that says excess funds must be frivolously applied to the creation of the project beyond the price of the project's creation. Ongoing concerns of the company behind the project is a perfectly normal place for excess funds to end up. Keeping the lights on and the employees paid is part of fulfilling the project goals. Well, as of this morning, the estimated per minute budget for animation according to their business plan is less than $35k. $30-50k per minute is industry standard for budget, according to their own video. They are millions away from even hitting the high end of their goal for the season as it stands.

Perin had the wolf with him - or at least available - since he escaped. I think I got caught up in the idea of taming one of the camp wolves. But I actually wanted to ask about a saddle more than armour. I guess that would be the same? Barding is feasible for a wolf, though the beast might not like it. I would call that an Animal Handling extended task to get the wolf to accept the barding. Obviously there's nothing available here for barding. You will have to have it made when you get back to town. There will be downtime after the next "chapter" and you will need downtime to get armor made and the wolf use to wearing it.That all makes sense, I just wanted to see if I needed to use one of the skills the pet gains for armour training (something I have seen on some forums). That is up to you. Obviously Perin is hoping for s...

I want to see the traditional samurai armor on a centaur. :) While I imagine Swithun looking more Native American than Japanese, I have to agree that a full-on Samurai Centaur would be terrifying (and awesome) to behold.

Despite Saarthax' best effort to bring about a peaceful end to the fight the orc refuses to surrender. Under the determined onslaught of the group the raging juggernaut is brought down. The noise of battle is replaced by the more distant noise of the fire in the village. A mob of 12 villagers, armed with pitchforks and crossbows rushes noisily towards you, intent on helping. The relief of many of their faces is obvious when they see the fight is over. Back in the town, Pinns's cottage is burning low as a group of villagers, armed with buckets, keeps the fire from spreading. "Something in there don't like water." Someone says. "Nearly went up again when Harry threw a bucket on it, so we left it and just made sure the fire di'nt spread." I thought Orc 1 was killed by Saarthax. Assuming that's true... He did, I just forgot to update the HPs Juggernaught save: 1d20+3 21

If people can put the childish insults aside for a minute, it's pointless to stat talking about a "good" movie unless you first define what you mean by "good". In addition it's also pretty pointless to make any kind of judgement about a movie that isn't even being filmed yet. In addition, when people say things like this I don't think money affects quality directly: they are orthogonal. when I believe they really mean I don't think money affects quality directly: they are orthogonal for my personal enjoyment of the movie. it doesn't help.

Now I'm arrogant because I like different things. That's rich. We live in different worlds, I guess. No, it's arrogance to presume that your tastes in any way, shape or form connote quality. You can like whatever you like, that's groovy. But, pretending that the things you like somehow mean that whatever you like is "good" is not. But, yeah, if you're just going to pull out single lines and not actually engage in anything like a discussion, we're done here. Feel free to have the last word.
