    If you're going for a defender, Ancestor from XGtE works better. And it works with whip because unlike Fighter (Cavalier) you don't need to be within 5'. You've likely got a shield, so you've got a decent AC plus standard B/P/S resistance. That's still plenty tough, even if Bear totem is the gold standard. Hmm rage will also add to whip damage, just for extra fun.

    Umm, yes, and ... ? Ranged is very potent in 5e, but that doesn't mean people don't want to play melee characters. The challenge is how to use a whip. You're not picking it for damage, which means you're either looking at finesse, reach or both.

    Both Monk (Kensei) and Rogue can use it to deliver high damage at reach. Sentinel feat can stop someone 10 feet away. It's the only 1 handed reach weapon so it can be used with a shield, which others can't - useful for front line non-tank. I wish it worked well with Booming Blade, but natively that only has a reach of 5'.

    I'm fond of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian from XGtE. You need to be raging and it's only the first hit per turn, but there's no limitations that the marked must stay close to you like the Cavalier - no matter where they move they have disadvantage against everyone else, and the target has resistance against their attacks if it does hit.

    Every "replace attack stat" has limitations. Finesse is only on a subset of weapons, none heavy/two-handed. Shillelagh only works on clubs and quarterstaves.     People assign genders to all sorts of objects based on perceived qualities. I think that with a human-like robot people would do that even more-so.     Everyone make a stealth check. Also, how much distance to you want to leave between you and the hunting party? The swamp is dense enough that with average stealth (DC 10) you could remain hidden from baseline lizardfolk if you were 60+ feet behind them. If they hunting party becomes suspicious, 100 feet is a better distance.

    Can I suggest that whatever single feature you give, it's a powerful one. As in more powerful then the existing. If all you get is one thing it should be something exciting and fun to use so that the the race has attraction. And not something that barely flavors play like a once per long rest ability.     I could have written that clearer. What I meant was that getting reduced by a vampire bite to 0 max HPs kills you. But having 0 max HPs from a vampire bite at a later point does not. There is no auto-kill at the later point just because you are at 0 max HPs, even if it had at a previous point been killed by a vampire.     Sure I allow double Dash in those cases. It's a heroic game of fireballs and dragons - this seems an odd hill to head towards realism on. It fits both RAW and RAF. And considering double actions already exist with things like action surge, it also seems to fit RAI. Along those lines, the rogue / fighter that wants to Action surge to get in Dash-Dash-Dash for one round can go for it.

    Yeah, it's very build and table dependent what is "better", and even there "better" is usually defined within a limited number of pillars of play (such as just combat). I really do pick both myself. My last two characters that leveled up were one feat and one was +2 CHR (for a bard, looking for more Bardic Inspiration uses as well as the other benefits).

    As a side note, your players are right. It's right in the PHB under the description of Healing Potion (pg 153). "Drinking or administering a potion takes an action.". This is also echoed to be true for all potions in the DMG, page 139.

    Except that regaining the maximum HPs is not a function of a benefit of a long rest (which requires 1 HP), rather it's the function of the Vampire's Bite where they come back after a long rest is taken. You can definitely take a long rest, even if you don't gain benefits due to having less than 1 HP.

    Moderate agreement - you will often see races that have a modifier paired with a class that uses that ability. It doesn't have to be +2. (If it did, you wouldn't see any variant humans, and I think they are the race I see the most.)     I have a new RAW interpretation I believe holds up. Unfortunately it does not agree with your DM's ruling so far. 1. Just having 0 HPs means the character starts making death saves. There are a few circumstances where it could also mean death - disintegrate, took massive damage, etc. But those are exceptions - 0 HP is not death. Three failed death saves or another killing effect is death....

    Kaodi, can you give us a list of what we picked up? I assume the pistol Zyzzy picked up is a "semi-auto pistol, tactical" from the rulebook. But she also stacked the other three weapons near the entrance. If they have any kind of armor, we would probably strip them of that too. And if we are tracking ammo, how much ammo is there? How much is still in each weapon?

    Not unless one of the characters gives up all of their actions. Try you and a friend (or several) walking down a street while each doing something. It does not require that everybody but one give up all of their actions to walk in a line. See also: marching band. (Taking an action for CHR (Perform).)

    One concept from an earlier edition of D&D was specific overrides general. If that's the case, the specific of the spell returning at 1 HP should overcome the general rule that HPs can not exceed max HPs.

I just wanted to point out that XCom is a lot like D&D 4e in having a lot of "this exact square vs. that square" in terms of positioning, cover, line of sight and effects. It needs a high level of precise, tactical control even if the system is less complex. I'm not saying this to refute your point, just mentioning that example has some differences...

    PoE2 changed the spell system from the original PoE to all spells refreshing after each combat, so it wasn't a problem if the AI burned through spells in an encounter.     Searinox Nagharha, jmucchiello, I know it's fun and exciting when you join the new game, but could you please slow down a bit? With 5 posts a day the entire conversation from the guard to the captain passed without single post from Charwoman Gene and VLAD the Destroyer and me managed single post in each conversation. I've been known to do it occasionally when I randomly get together with Azurewraith online, but you need to stop afterwards and see if anyone adds something new that affects the future events. Thank you for your understanding :) P.S: PbP is slow, you get used to it eventually. Even fastest paced adventures rarely do more than about round per day.

    jmucchiello There are a couple of pet peeves for me in the build. Regeneration 10. In most of my other games I have banned Regeneration as it is too cheap in my opinion. I now require Healing (Self) to model a fast recovery perhaps with trigger or reaction. Improved Crit more than 1 rank if it isn't conceptually integral also isn't allowed.     It's not the player's place to argue rules interpretations with the DM like a lawyer making a case to a judge or jury. The 5e DM's role is to interpret (and change and add to and overrule and outright ignore and change his mind about later) the rules as he sees fit, it's the "DM Empowerment" feature of 5e. I've played in an RPG where the players knew no rules and the DM, jmucchiello , adjudicated everything. It was a lot of fun, but there was trust and consistency from him. In an RPG with written rules, that's a common foundation for everyone playing the game, with the DM both as arbiter and custodian of the rules. If there is ambiguity, like in this case, it's up to the DM to decided how to run it. And if there is no ambiguity but the DM wants to run it otherwise, they can do that as well as a house rule. However, it's the shared understanding of the rules that allows things to flow smoothly. If different people in the group interpret a rule differently, there should be a discussion. Yes, the DM has final say, but I've made mistakes running before and had the correct rule pointed out to me. And there have been ambiguous things (like this spell) that players have convinced me are either fine or cooler run a way different than my default would have been.     Conversely, the relative inability of nonspellcasters to behead, knock out, or otherwise one-shot an opponent is an issue. That's where the balance issue lies if any. Vorpal swords and quivering palm just aren't enough. There need to be ways for characters (particularly those skilled in martial arts) to cause instant death or disablement and bypass the hit point system. Implement that well (not easy to do) and the problem is solved. I'd agree with this. In fact I'd go so far as to say that if instant death exists in a system at all it should be the function of (a) non-casters or (b) natural attacks like the Medusa. jmucchiello, how many fights per day did you have? You say "But the other 9 in 10 combats, he made the save or the wizard no longer had THAT spell any more." - given that a fifth level specialist wizard can easily have three third level spells, four second level, and five first level, that's a dozen substantial spells. I'll be generous and assume only the third level spells are used as fight enders. That's still three major fights. Are you seriously telling me that your PCs get through thirty fights per day? Because that is what you are implying. At 9th level, it's a potential 22 substantive spells per day (with seven of fourth or fifth level) - the fighters arms are going to get tired at that rate.

    What? I don't think I've ever played in a D&D game that was based on actual mythology. No orcs, no gobilns, gods running around having sex and producing offspring, etc. Your point about rarity was interesting and valid for a lot of game settings. But mythology? It's a great source of monsters and plots. Not so much a source for economic realities. This is an evasion. We're discussing real world economics and such to justify, using real world mythology as an example of how just needing items doesn't mean they will be made in large numbers is reasonable in this discussion. If you are going to dodge mythology, you need to also dodge real world economics and trade in order to avoid hypocrisy.

    Town? Treasure is divided ASAP as you don't know you even will make it to town and using the magic items to get to town is important. Depends on the group composition and edition. If you can't just know what magic items do by sleeping with them, they were often not useful as you weren't able to use them. Money was just held by the party fighter or barbarian, as they had the greatest carrying capacity without becoming encumbered. If you happened to have a wizard with identify memorized and pearls, you could ID things in the field and get them into the right hands.

    I've recently gotten into watching the first Critical Role campaign. Mostly, I have it on as background while I work on my own D&D stuff. It's sort of like mood music in that regard. I also agree with 5ekyu & cmad1977 in that it's kind of like listening to a radio play. I don't see how this is any different from getting a player who has only ever had one DM before YOU. And unlike that situation, you have the benefit (if you want) of knowing exactly how this other DM does the job. It has a lot of similarities, but Critical Role has a much large audience than one player's former DM. That popularity gives it a kind of implied authority that goes beyond "the one guy who introduced me to the game did it this way." As with all social issues in RPGs, COMMUNICATION is key. Very true.     Notice the post I linked is from LAST October. At the table, I'm sure a year did not pass between deciding to raid Dulin's Tomb and where we are now. It is hard to keep track of details in this story.Sorry I apparently haven't been getting updates. At the table I think it took about 3 maybe four sessions which helped avoid confusion as the reveal happened sooner which prevented the stall that we seemed to have hit. Now that everything is back to normal I'm hoping we can get this story wrapped up! As my first foray into PBP DMING I feel I have learnt some stuffs really don't work well in this format.

If you spend more than a couple months in one location, you should find out about far more than 1d4 magic items. It's just a lousy implementation.     Thanks, I'll see if I keep the story as is or if your input changes anything. Do you have a deadline in mind for when my PC should be ready to go? Not yet, I wasn't expecting much this side of New Year's day. I'm surprised we got this much done already. I appreciate it, as it lets me start to line things up in my head. I guess no one here went away for the holiday? I hope not. I just can't find the time to deep dive with the PHB (to pick out spells). I'm thinking Arcane Knight. I just wish it was Charisma based instead of Int based. It's not like it uses the spell book paradigm for spells. I kind of see your point, but I also think the last thing that's needed is another CHA caster. Relying on a tertiary stat for a major part of you class shtick is very limiting. I think they get a lot better at level 10 with Eldritch Strike, but I've never played one that far. I've seen a lot of people suggest that Transmutation school would make more sense for EK than Evocation

    I prefer my method, "Don't care." And in OSR, you give the spare magic to your henchmen. With enough henchmen, you never have too many magic items. Good points, both. Anyway, "too many" is subjective in this case, and so it's entirely based on what sort of story the group is trying to tell, and what sort of world they're trying to model.

    I might be switching to a celestial or divine soul sorcerer. My original fighter plan is in tatters. You really wanted that hand crossbow? Poor Justincase's Pally is going to be soaking a lot of damage then :P If I throw some retainer in that should not be an issue. I don't think that I want to hand out five retainers just yet - possibly just one or two to try out the rules, so I will most likely roll to see who gets one. Unless anyone doesn't want one or makes a really good case why they (or someone else) should have one.

    I just noticed you didn't say point buy, standard array, or roll for ability scores. I'm guessing point buy. Oops, good point. Yeah I prefer point buy online as the rollers seem to be a bit strange when it comes to abilities.

    The UA sidekicks? Sounds good. No, the retainers from the strongholds book. There are three types of followers, Units, Retainers and Artisans. Retainers are a lot like the sidekicks, but much simpler, and are useful without a stronghold. Units are for attacking or defending strongholds, artisans affect costs, etc of your stronghold so neither are any use until after you get one. Technically I think you are supposed to have a stronghold first, but since you only get that at the very end of the adventure I might give you one each to try out the mechanics.
