  • 07:47 PM - Morrus mentioned the in post Who to follow on Twitter
The master list of role-playing-game-related people to "follow" on Twitter. This list is far from exhaustive and is industry-centric (game designers and the like) - but if there are folks like me out there who are looking for interesting RPG-types to follow, here are a few suggestions. Use this list as a starting point. It's certainly not an exhaustive list! You'll soon find yourself discovering other people to follow simply by virtue of using this starting network. You'll see who they tweet to, retweet, and so on and develop your own list. Of course, you'll end up following a lot more than just RPG folks - there will be many people to follow no matter what interests you have. For example, I follow a number of British comedians, the BBC, some of my favourite TV shows, some friends, and so on. But this post is about using Twitter to enhance your gaming. The first thing you'll probably ask is "What's the point?" I did, too. It was only when I read this excellent post by weem and ...

  • 08:59 PM - Water Bob mentioned the in post Standard and Full Actions, really necessary?
@the OP A 3E Combat round is only 6 seconds long. You've only got time to do so much within that period. The default is attack once and move. That's your Standard Action plus Move Action. Now, there are VARIANTS to the standard combat round. You want to attack more than once? Fine. Give up the Move and use all of your allotted time attacking. Full Action. You want to move farther than normal? You want to run? Fine. Give up the Standard Action and use two Move actions. To me, the rules as written are very straightforward and playable. I don't really see what the issue is with movement that you allude to in the OP. To break it all down... You've got 6 seconds to act. You can... Standard Action + Move Action (or the reverse) Move Action + Move Action (all movement during the round) Full Action (no movement* during the round as the character does something else) Notes: *A character can always take his 5' Step. The three action labels (Standard, Move, Full)...

  • 06:22 AM - doctorbadwolf mentioned the in post Variants/Subclass for a DPR Rogue
Thurmas that’s an interesting idea. While I like that rogues play differently than any other class, that isn’t a bad idea way to give a very simple change that brings the rogue to where many players want them. @Jester David btw, the assassin is still a mostly exploration and interaction focused subclass. The point with the subclasses is to have 1 or more option for the rogue that adds nothing to those pillars beyond what’s in the base class. The assassin does not do that much damage in most sessions, it certainly isn’t reliable. In doing comparable damage to other damage focused options. A rogue that gives up some skill monkeying to reach the top tier in combat efficacy isn’t unreasonable.

  • 05:11 PM - Shemeska mentioned the in post Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 11April2019)
Daru ib Shamiq: https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/807332516898242564/w9vBWIrJ.jpg A fine update, Shemeska. I knew you weren't dead because of your Twitter activity, but you've been scarce around here. Will the ultroloths ever tumble to the fact that the Ebon has it in for them? I've not been active on Enworld much beyond posting the storyhour (and I'll continue to post it here until it's finished), but I'm most active on Facebook and Twitter (and good Lord I've got my main twitter @ therealshemeska and my in character alts @ askshemeshka @ Ilsetsya and @ Shylarathe). I'm in the middle of my 2nd year of pharmacy school and life outside of school is rather complicated at the moment, so my output has been spotty, for which I apologize. Oh the ultroloths are absolutely aware of the sheer and utter contempt that Vorkannis has for their entire caste. But at the same time arcanaloths aren't necessarily treated any better at the end of the day. Vorkannis treats them like yappy magical disposable tools. You've seen him clearly taking joy in turning ultroloths into puppets with chunks of crystal lodged in their heads, but behind the scenes you've also seen him turn nascent arcanaloths into astra...

As always Mike, thank you for sharing. I'm not really fond of GR, but from what I know of him, I thunk the CosmicKid 's approach is more in line with the tale.

  • 04:15 PM - Elfcrusher mentioned the in post Mythological Figures: Conan the Barbarian (5E)
The original class was Thief back in 1E and before. It got renamed in 2E a bit when the bard got lumped under the Rogue label and then even more in 3E and later. The origin of the class is, I suspect, threefold: Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit (listed as a burglar), Lankhmar's thieves (guild and free), and, of course, REH's Conan. But we are talking about modeling Conan in 5e, not earlier editions, and theCosmicKid based his dismissiveness of other opinions on some pretty shoddy...even bizarre...logic. I totally agree you don't need a class for everything, but IMO rogue fits Conan fairly well, with a few nits aside. But why? Which specific abilities, as opposed to the argument "well, he was a thief and the rogue is the thief class"? I agree that, sure, a sprinkling of rogue wouldn't actually hurt, but I think the opportunity cost (of fewer levels of fighter and/or barbarian) aren't worth it, since a single Feat (Prodigy) gets you so much of what Rogue would give, without ...

  • 01:17 AM - Ashrym mentioned the in post How can players counter Mass Suggestion?
the OP: either let them run away to return again a future day (with cheese in their ears) after playing it out, or let them learn of the issue in advance and start with cheese in their ears. Spells like mass suggestion are surprisingly easy to foil with advanced knowledge.

  • 07:43 AM - Sword of Spirit mentioned the in post Is It Impossible To Benefit From 'One With Shadows'?
@The Savant I like some of your reasoning, but I can't find any evidence that the Hide action only comes into play when hiding would be difficult. The rules specify that you use the Hide action to hide in combat, with no qualifications. Also, while I kind of like your interpretation of invisibility specifically negating the need for the Hide action in order to make the check, I'm pretty sure that wasn't design intent.

@platostotle As I understand it, Tiamat had always been LE. Why the change to CE in 5e? @JeremyECrawford Tiamat's invasions of worlds in the multiverse keep failing. She's cranky (CE = Cranky Evil). @MrStonebraker So Animate object turns objects into creatures. Does this mean they can give and recieve flanking adv @JeremyECrawford Yes. @theCrossDM when one disengages, do you disengage from a specific target or everyone? @JeremyECrawford Disengage isn't directed at a particular combatant. You take the action, and you gain the benefit. @Andreblima21 master, if a character has multiclass(wiz 12/fighter 1) can he level up both classes to 20? @JeremyECrawford The maximum character level is 20. If you multiclass, your levels in all your classes can add up to a number no higher than 20.

platostotle why is Tiamat CE if she resides in the 9 Hells? JeremyECrawford You can reside on a plane of existence without sharing its predominant alignment. Atlemar as god of vengeance isn't she more lawful evil? JeremyECrawford She is the god of evil dragons. Anything else is secondary. And she cares little for law or maintaining cosmic order. theWardVG Does an enlarged monk get 1d4 extra dmg on unarmed attacks? It says weapon attack. but larger fists should hurt more right? JeremyECrawford Being larger than Medium doesn't change a monk's Martial Arts dice. JeremyECrawford Turns out the original question was about the enlarge spell, nor enlarging a monk in general. New answer coming. &#8207 theWardVG My question was regarding the enlarge spell effects additional damage, not the attacks damage die itself JeremyECrawford Enlarge/reduce spell can enlarge your weapon with you. RAW: doesn't work on unarmed strikes. RAI: I'd allow it. MPetruzz How can I tell whether a creature uses Str or Dex to calculate its attack bonus if...

@theCommanderDJ Does stabilising a creature while within 5ft of an enemy provoke an Attack of Opportunity? @JeremyECrawford The only thing that provokes an opportunity attack is leaving a foe's reach, unless a feature says otherwise. @MFBurritt mechanically, would "full" orc PCs be a subrace of half-orc (i.e. mostly the same but w/aggressive)? sorry if redundant @JeremyECrawford Orc would be its own thing, just as elf isn't a subrace of half-elf. @Josh_watson If a mount uses the Dodge action in combat, does the rider also gain the benefits of the Dodge action? @JeremyECrawford A mount dodging doesn't mean the rider is dodging. @MrMattFree Does light from a magic weapon’s characteristics (not via a spell) count as magical that can illuminate a Darkness spell? @JeremyECrawford Darkness cares only about light created by a spell. @SalmonSquire Do you first think of a character you want to play or a mechanic you want to use when rolling up a new character? @JeremyECrawford I think...

Lokiare When a skill check is easier for one character instead of another do you adjust the DC? Different DCs for different chars? JeremyECrawford Differences in ability between characters is represented by their stats and things like advantage/disadvantage. sethdereus Is Martial Adept feat intended to only be for Battlemaster maneuvers, or any archetype with m's? JeremyECrawford Martial Adept: the maneuvers you choose come from the Battle Master (PH, 168). @Lwnasidh Does stunning strike work with unarmed strikes? 1st print says "melee weapon attack," but I know there were clarifications. JeremyECrawford Stunning Strike works with melee weapon attacks, and an unarmed strike counts as a melee weapon attack. scatterbreak Shocking Grasp is cast and a rogue tries to reduce the damage w Uncanny Dodge. Timing Q: does SG prevent UD from working? JeremyECrawford The hit of shocking grasp occurs before Uncanny Dodge, so yes, that spell prevents a use of Uncanny Dodge. itssosublime is this due to it being a touch effect?? Since touch is required I see ...

@mrprotoman Can a Warlock pass their Pact Blade off to another to use, as long as they are proficient with the weapon it replicates? JeremyECrawford You can hand your pact weapon to someone else. But it disappears if it's 5+ ft. away from you for 1+ minute. theWaterman Conjure Barrage uses a weapon for damage type but not damage dealt. Nets lack damage type so what if one is used for spell? JeremyECrawford Conjure volley is meant to work with ammunition or a weapon that deals damage. @IRakhlin Can a weapon be used with a different stat if used as an improvised weapon? For example, a glaive used with dexterity. JeremyECrawford The finesse property lets you use Str. or Dex. w/ a weapon attack. An improvised weapon doesn't also do this. SennSationalist Intention for Wild Magic unicorn: if Polymorphed, Planar Bound, inside Magic Circle, etc. it still 'disappears' after 1min? JeremyECrawford None of the spells you mentioned would stop the Wild Magic unicorn from disappearing.

  • 06:58 PM - Tony Vargas mentioned the in post Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E
I had previously listed one of those things that prevent confidence as not being able to know the mind of the DM. Having the same DM, Players, and Campaign over a span of decades would certainly lessen that problem. It has not, however been my game experience, and it's IMHO not something the system itself should assume or require.'Gaming the DM' is perhaps the most potent form of powergaming there is. Game with the same people for decades and the pendulum could swing back and forth between players having the DM's number (and 'acting with confidence' because they know exactly which plot hooks to go for, which to be careful around, and which to avoid, how to declare their actions to assure success, etc etc, etc), the the DM getting wise and throwing them curves for a while... And, yes, a game - like D&D - that absolutely requires a DM - can safely assume/require a good enough one, if only in the sense that bad play experiences are the DM's fault. When I started reading this thread, I thought it was pretty obvious what thecausaloblivion was looking for out of the game, and w...

  • 07:19 PM - pemerton mentioned the in post Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E
In many cases I agree with what pemerton says as well, but in this particular thread I feel he is staking out two opposite ends of a philosophical spectrum, and then saying that minor differences between D&D 5e and other games push 5e and those other games on opposite ends of that spectrum. (Or maybe he's not actually claiming that, and just using the philosophy as a magnifying glass to play Devil's Advocate....?) I find 5e suited just fine to players contributing to the fiction, to "failing forward", and to powergaming. Is it perfect for any one of those? No. Are there other games more suited? Sure. But to read through the rules and conclude, "there's no player agency" is utter and complete nonsense.I'm posting sincerely. That's not to say that I'm laying my soul bare - in my experience, anonymous forums aren't well-suited to that - but I'm not goading (or, at least, I'm not setting out to do that) and I'm not playing devil's advocate. When I started reading this thread, I thought it was pretty obvious what thecausaloblivion was looking for out of the game, and why that was being looked for, and why there might be concerns th...
