  • 03:58 PM - Sadras mentioned HardcoreDandDGirl in post Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?
...hard stand, which is fine, I just wanted to challenge it to see if he really believes DMs should be that flexible which it looks like he does. As DM, I generally propose a plethora of campaign options and let the players choose where/when they want to play. They know the settings - and sometimes they propose non-standard character options for these settings which for the most part I work with them and allow. But I imagine if someone came to me and asked me to play a Warforged character (and since we do not play Eberon) I would undoubtedly say no. That would be my hard limit. And its not that I'm unimaginative - I just do not like the concept of Warforged - I as DM do not want to deal with Warforged, just like Hussar does not want to deal with Planescape. Now Hussar's point would be that I as DM am unimaginative and that I have lost a fully engaged player (because whatever else he/she chooses, will result in that player not being fully engaged) - this is where he and I disagree. @HardcoreDandDGirl let me know if there is still an issue you would like me to answer back on from your previous post.

DM's fully have the right to disallow whatever they want I place a lot of blame on the DMs. The PHB has Rule:0 ask the DM while the DMG tells the DM in several places that he or she is in charge of how the game is run at the table, which rules are used/followed, and which supplements in use.I don't think the language of "right" is very helpful in this context. Against whom is the right held? Are we saying that players have obligations to do as the GM says? I'm not sure talking about "blame" gets us very far either. I agree with HardcoreDandDGirl and doctorhook: the relevant concepts are compromise and fun. But, speaking as someone who didn't play 3e or 4e, it was a real shock coming back to the game... the entire culture has shifted from DM Fiat to Player Entitlement, at least going on forum culture <snip> in earlier editions, the DM was still the keeper of the rules, really, and I think that's a good thing for quite a few reasons. From what I've seen of 3e and 4e, the players are heavily involved in the crunch (I also appreciate that many players really like this).Classic D&D and AD&D had virtually no PC build rules, but they had some. A fighter has to use weapons and armour; a magic-user has to choose spell load out on a daily basis; a 2nd ed AD&D thief player has to allocate skill percentiles. I never saw GMs try and dictate weapon and armour choices, tell the MU player what spells to pick, tell the thief player how to allocate skills. With the increase in build options - more classes, more races, more feats...

  • 04:51 PM - Quickleaf mentioned HardcoreDandDGirl in post how would it hurt to take a diffrent class sub class
HardcoreDandDGirl My first thought is that some classes (e.g. Clerics, sorcerers, warlocks) don't have sub-classes in the same way other classes do, that sub-class features sometimes build off of core class features, that level advancement occurs differently and thus interchanging sub-classes will involve unequal power exchange and a certain amount of fudging. It's true the Rogue and Fighter sub-classes are more interchangeable than most other classes... Fighter (Battle Master) 3: Combat Superiority, Student of War 7: Know Your Enemy 10: Improved Combat Superiority 15: Relentless Rogue (Thief) 3: Fast Hands (requires rogue's cunning action), Second Story Work 9: Supreme Sneak 13: Use Magic Device 17: Thief's Reflexes However, a Rogue taking a martial archetype gains a distinct combat power boost and gains their sub-class features sooner, whereas a Fighter taking a roguish archetype needs the DM to fudge the cunning action requirement of Fast Hands and gains their sub-class features later. My hunch i...

This is a genuine issue where argument on the internet has made me change my perspective. At first I thought they were stupid - but if I was going after stupid I'd go after the flail snail, the flumph, and the beholder. Sexist? I thought so too at first. But I frequently read posts like HardcoreDandDGirl 's first on this thread - which is both the single most relevant and informative post on this entire thread and appears to have been lost to the discussion, so I'm quoting it in full: Hi, I'm a woman who has taken up this cause, since men seem to miss the whole point.. Dragon born and Shardmind are PC races ( I guess Minotaurs can be) as a woman I want to play a woman. I identify some pretty basic features, and on a visual level Breast and hips are the easiest. I have no doubt that if a male PC was forces to visually represent themselves as a ken doll down there the explosion would be huge... I have met only 1 woman gamer who had a problem with "Dragon boobs" but I've meet dozens of men who do. On the other hand I can count more woman gamers then I have fingers who would consider it an insult to woman everywhere to make anyone have to deal with "Well our fantasy race that can be made anyway we want have to not represent women" so, would you be ok with it effecting mal...

  • 03:06 AM - DMZ2112 mentioned HardcoreDandDGirl in post Inappropriate breasts on female monsters
In a non-human race? Sure. Yes, I would definitely be fine with the male gender being changed also. Why would I be unwilling to play a character that does not mirror my real life physical characteristics? I'll ask my sister about that but I'm pretty sure she still considers herself a woman. I don't think any of you are getting HardcoreDandDGirl 's point. She's not saying it makes sense that females of nonhuman species have breasts, nor that all female humans have breasts. All she's saying is that giving female members of non-human species breasts helps them appeal to the majority of female gamers who do have breasts and can therefore relate to them more easily. I'm glad the three of you are open-minded about playing 'the other,' but I've met enough male gamers who only play male characters to say that if the PHB explicitly stated that male elves don't have penises, it would give them more than a few seconds' pause.

  • 08:13 PM - Savage Wombat mentioned HardcoreDandDGirl in post MM Firesnake up on Christopher Burdett's Blog
If you say so. I have posted several responses to this thread that did not go down that path. I was explicitly trying to address your issue of it being dismissive. It is dismissive. Just because you do not like that answer does not make it less so for other people. Just because you find this to be important does not make it important. It only makes it important to you. You asked the question "The question is why WotC decided to create a new baby monster for the MM? My response to you is "why is WotC doing so morally reprehensible?". You have yet to really answer that type of question. It's wrong because it is wrong is not a sufficient answer. It's fiction. It's not real. Yes, this is a non-issue because you cannot even explain why your moral high ground is anything of the sort. 1. I didn't feel the need to rehash the explanation HardcoreDandDGirl already went over. 2. As I originally stated, the fact that you are dismissive the argument and don't see what we're saying - is what I find troubling. You really should see it. 3. Fiction holds a mirror up to reality. Fiction that does not attempt to say something about reality is without value. Lots of people, even those who agree with you on this point, will not tolerate the "it's just a game" argument. 4. The concept of whether killing baby sentients is acceptable is an argument almost as old as D&D itself. I criticize WotC for deliberately creating a monster that adds to that argument instead of reducing it. 5. Comparisons to Alien Xenomorphs or ravenous hatchlings in a movie are not particularly relevant to discussing creatures that have their own culture, society, and intellect. If putting baby salamanders on the monster list is acceptable, baby orcs is just one step further. As a wise man once said, a baby stone giant may be capable of squashing armed men,...

...this... it's 2014 A GIRLFRIEND CLASS....  right because like I was told in the 90's "Girls don't get it!!!" Well you know what... most of the guys I've known don't get the rules half as well as I do... but right now I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND who liked the play test... maybe in your eyes I should tell her "Sorry simple classes only?!?!?" This post I find utterly ridiculous. All this PC (politically correct) extremism is rather overplayed IMO. As if none of us make the odd "off-joke" to get a couple of laughs (even in front of those who we are playfully teasing). There appears to be too many uptight people in this world which is a damn shame, and it's sad that its even crept into our, hopefully 'enlightened nerdy relaxed', community of role-players. Should my wife or someone else make a joke about men, I will laugh and try, if I think I can, to match the wit with a tease back of my own. Really it was a harmless comment. Don't take life so seriously. ;) EDIT: I saw HardcoreDandDGirl's post first and replied, so I do not mean to single you out alone. It is essentially for everyone that started laying into Andor about the comment. Queue the attacks on me below the sexist-pig :D:p

HardcoreDandDGirl, it uses a single d6. I know, I know, but it works! Google "GUMSHOE 101"; that's a 1-pager I wrote that explains how the rules system works. RW, I hear you. My goals are all focused on things that bring value to the game and which don't need extra shipping. I'll be adding a lot of words, but avoiding additional physical items. And holy cow. 10 hours in and I'm at something like 450% funding. I'm delighted and completely blown away.

...can do the things he does because that's what he is, not because he's a fighter. If he were a rogue or even an enchanter like Circe, you can bet he'd probably be doing the same things. And I don't think I'd use Achilles fighting Scamander as a positive example here. My copy of the Iliad has him running from the river like a little school girl crying out for the gods to save his misbegotten hiney. And it appears to be only their intervention that saves him.My point is that Achilles thought it made sense to try. In other circumstances, or with a bit more mojo, he could have won. How does a 3E fighter even go about trying to wrestle a river? As for whether or not Hercules is a fighter - on that I defer to Tom Moldvay, who instances Hercules as the prototypical fighter, and Merlin as the prototypical magic-user, in his version of Basic D&D. I have a vague memory that the 2nd ed AD&D PHB followed him on this. I don't really think I'm missing anything from most of the current discussion. HardcoreDandDGirl seems to want a character who encroaches on the wizard mojo rather than a mundane martialist no matter how effective he is.I don't see how you get that, given that HardcoreDandDGirl is happy to play a warblade.
  • 07:05 AM - pemerton mentioned HardcoreDandDGirl in post Does pathfinder strike anyone as too gamey?
...complaining about the fighter if that's not what you want to play? If you don't like playing the fighter (or rogue, or monk, or bard, or whatever) as he is the options really should be obvious. Play something else. You may be missing (some of) the point - that people want to play a warrior PC (whether inspired by Conan, or Lancelot, or Achilles, or Aragorn, or any of the dozens of other literary or mythological warrior heroes) but want that PC to be more mechanically effective within the game than they find the 3E (or even PF) fighter to be. In Hussar's case, he is pegging that mechanical effectiveness to AD&D levels, where fighters, above low levels, have average to good saves and some of the best ability to take down enemies in combat. Compared to 3E, where they tend to have the worst saves and have only a mediocre ability to take down enemies in combat (given that monster hit points - which fighters target - get better whereas their saves - which MUs target - get worse). In HardcoreDandDGirl's case, she is nominating the Warblade as a class that occupies the same functional and archetyical niche as a fighter, but has more adequate mechancial effectiveness assuming that some other classes - like non-Persistent Metagamic clerics - are treated as a baseline for the system.

As a bonus action you can dash, or hide, or interact with a skill from rogue, or make an extra attack as a monk, or spend a ki and make 2 extra attacks as a monk. Use a shortsword, it’s a monk weapon so deals 1d10 in your hands… yup a finesse d10 weapon for those rogue lovers. AC would be 10+wis+dex (dex is your prime stat both attack and defense) and you could pick up defensive style for +1 more. So you always can make 5 short sword attacks dealing d10, in perfect situation with 2 targets and spending a ki point its 7 short sword attacks. I tried the mystic in a short game that we started at level 7. I ran Magna for about two months so 6ish games each was a few hours. I was a Wu-Jen who took Psychic Hammer Mind Thrust Mastery of Fire Mastery of Force Mantle of Command Iron Durability Psionic Restoration Third Eye My 3 spells where Dispel Magic, Charm Person, and Fireball. I found that I was more versatile then a 7th level character of any 1 class, but not more powerful. I meant for her to be like phoenix from the comics, but ended up being much more of a warlord. I kept using 3 power points to let the rogue attack for 1d4+7+4d6 Early on we talked about the spells, and we laughed that with 38 points I could make 7 3rd level slots and cast fireball or dispel each one… the wizard on the other hand had 3 3rd level and 1 4th level spell. So to match his fireball output I would spend 15 points on 3rd level spells, and 6 points on a 4th level one leaving me with 17 points left for the day. Now if we took a short rest ...

I have a cold and virtually no patience to explain the obvious fact that you should be aware of what you say, and who you're saying it to/around, and that something you've innocently said can be misconstrued by a stranger who doesn't catch your entire conversation. That is absolutely not the same thing as your friend who knows you and how you will react not being able to tell you about the Shrek Xmas special and you should most certainly know that and not need to have me explain it to you!

I am almost 30... I have been gaming since I was 8, my first Con was a local one at the age of 13 and I hate to say it but I know almost no woman who go to cons and stores and play that don't have at least 1 story... Not one of my woman friends that aren't gamers can say they don't have at least a 'feel uncomforable' story so I don't want to make it sound like it is just gamers. How ever I would kill for the next little girl who wants to play D&D comes here and say "Never happened to me..." I am 58 and have been dealing with this for a long time and I am exhausted. Everyone of my gaming friends who are female and who are gay have stories. My roommate is DMing right now and a young friend of mine who I met through pagan activities wanted to know how to play so she joined her group. I was hoping she never had to experience what we have. But when she went to a local game store to buy her first dice she was initiatied into the club. She had brought her mom and her baby son with her. He started fussin...

I have been relatively lucky I have only 3 times been physically assaulted in a gaming environment and only 3 or so times that verbally in any way that is worse then the guys treat each other... I know I am lucky that there are women who get it worse... I've been to well over 30 conventions in my life and you know how many times i've been physically assaulted or spoken to in any way I found close to menacing or harassing? Zero. Yet this is what women like HardcoreDandDGirl get conditioned into thinking by the behavior of some of the men in the community - that they are relatively lucky to have been physically assaulted only 3 times. That's how bad the problem is. That's how far this is from what should be a normal expectation of zero physical assaults in over 30 years of gaming. Edit: Sorry to use your post as a springboard for this HardcoreDandDGirl, but your comment perfectly illustrates the different mindset women have to be in around these events in order to protect themselves compared to men.

again groups both guys and girls... groups are good. Last time I was at a Con we had a night game that ran late it was like midnight when we called it, and most of us went to the Ram for burgers (the big one I can't finish) and one of the guys an older fellow offered to walk me back to my hotel. I had just met him that night, and yea he seemed cool like a grand father and he didn't stare or say anything wrong, but I felt I had to say no... because I just didn't know. I got doubley lucky because the kid who ran the event said we could all go... I felt much better even though that was 3 strange guys...none of them did anything inappropriate and they only walked me to the lobby then headed back to there hotels... it sucks to have to think that way. But you have to sometimes. There's nothing wrong with a polite no if you feel uncomfortable. That's something else to add to awareness if someone creates a list. Listen to your instincts.

thank you... and again I want to point out in general, I think most of us (gamers at cons and stores and home games) aren't the worst, I hear way worse at concerts or sports things. I also think that the few minor issues over almost twenty years were minor compared to some stories I have heard. If you are a woman at a con in cos play out side smokeing you will find people that come up and say the worst things...and I feel like I have always come away ok. Good because people saying stupid junk is one thing... but true harassment (and trust me I have seen and heard a lot including a crying little girl who must have been less then 13 and her mom in the bathroom at Dragon Con one year... I find my eyes tearing up just thinking of it. We need to do better, and threads like this could do a lot of good if we all talk through it and make some real changes... but not if we break down to dumb arguments. in theory this sounds great... and the top half I am 100% behind... but I have to be a pain for amoment. big men with guns are not that trust worthy (I grew up in the south and know many big men with guns) I don't want that... although traveling in groups is better then alone I agree, if anyone is accompanying women to their rooms it should be people they choose because they're comfortable around them. Also it's probably best to pick more than one. Not knocking women's judgement, all people have their shortsights and misjudge people. It's probably best to have more than one.

I started playing on my own not because of a guy. Years later I got the guy I was dating into playing and we joined a group and several of the guys asked him how he got me to play and what advice he could offer to them to get their girl friends to play. He looked at them and said I don't know maybe date someone who shares your hobbies. And no I was not insulted or felt harassed I was a little peeved that the assumption was we can't find geek hobbies on our own. One thing I did notice was how he was treated as newbie as opposed to another newbie who joined months later who was a woman. He was basically thrown in and told to swim. Are you kidding with this hypothetical statement? If he said something sexist and you asked him to stop and he did then there was no harassment if he kept it up then that is harassment and if the others back you up and that is Gencon policy then who cares how far he he came and how much he paid.

OMG this looks utterly fantastic. Now this game setting will get me to play 5th edition. :) All the playtesting so far has been some of the most fun I've had with D&D 5E. :D I've done a good bit of play with the system too (there's this whole big Hypercorps 2099 5E book I did that's coming out this month) but even the adventure books (Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat) didn't work out for me nearly as well as the Mists of Akuma material that's hit the board so far. You'll be in an excellent spot to enjoy the game! This sounds so great. I'm totally down for this, and will buy it even if I don't play or run the setting the feats and ideas will be perfect... In addition to the martial arts stance feats, there are another 11 in the document and I anticipate that we'll have more (preferably as many regular feats as martial artist stances, though that decision will come after more development): Ancestral Weapon, Deductive Mind, Defiler, Descendant of the Imperial Siblings, Metallic Elementalist...

Prepare yourself for what lay in wait because those oni aren't messing around! "Don't worry about the world ending today, because it's already tomorrow in Australia." -- Charles M. Schultz On another note, would the humanoid monsters from the Mists of Akuma be known as "Akumen" on account of their superlative abilities at the things they do? There are a lot of monsters in Mists of Akuma, and while I'll consider Akumen (mostly because I love puns and anything that resembles them, though I'm trying hard to stamp down that urge with MoA), currently the things that emerge most are bakemono, shikome (both player races), and adeddo-oni. There are lots of oni, but adeddo-oni are notably different than your run-of-the-mill bakekujira, harianago, jinmenju, sayona, tikbalang, or (dare I reveal this) yaoguai. :D

pardon my stupidity... what is isometric? Maps that look like this 74966 The Castle Ravenloft map like it was in previous editions will be isometric. I am hoping however that there will be a top down version of the castle's floors as well as the isometric map of it. As the Isometric map can't be used on a table top.
