  • 02:12 PM - pemerton mentioned Tallifer in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
... to go earlier? They're too twitchy to help themselves? Participants in a footrace can come in first, second, third etc, and draw, so a straightforward Strength (Athletics) ability check is a better mechanic to apply. Contests are not for ranking, they're for cases where creatures are directly opposing each other. Edit to give an example. Five creatures race, getting Strength (Athletics) checks of 11, 16, 2, 12, 11. They place in this order - 16 (wins), 12 (second), 11 and 11 (tied for third), 2 (last). But how is that not an application of the contest mechanics (ie a comparison of opposed checks)? It is not comparing the results of a check to a GM-set DC. It seems pretty clear at this point that multiple people in this thread can't tell the difference between indirect opposition like races, initiative, and javalin throws, and direct opposition like arm wrestling, snatching a ring off the ground before the other guy, and preventing someone from opening a door.Or - to add to Tallifer's alternative suggestion - don't think that any such difference is salient to the contest rules. To say that two opponents in a footrace are not directly opposed or that it's not the case that only one can succeed (at coming first) seems strained to me. (Compare eg an exam, where each is trying to do his/her best but neither is trying to best[/I the other in a head-to-head competition. And then compare an exam to a buzzer-based quiz show. Etc.) The alternative logic means that a race to get to point X first is not a contest, but putting a ring there which the first competitor has to grab and stick on his/her finger makes it one. That's odd to say the least. More generally, I think that 5e has the resources to resolve simple running races as well as "king of the hill" type competitions without needing to enter the murky territory of "house rules". (And an arm wrestle surely [I]wouldn't be a contest. Surely the character with the higher STR just wins, absent some rather exceptio...

  • 09:50 AM - Jhaelen mentioned Tallifer in post Do you enjoy playing roleplaying games in which you have no clue about the rules?
...out a more deliberate and enduring sort of rules opacity.Ah, I see. It's been a while since I read the OP, but that wasn't my impression. Only the Dungeon Master had any books. He would let us peruse them but such a limited look meant we relied on him for any mechanical information. We just made characters according to our vague ideas and he would walk us through the relevant character generation. This very much sounds like providing information about rules on an 'as needed' basis. Recently my friend Jef Fej started his own homebrew, but most of the other players want to know the rules instead of go with the flow of experimentation and exploration.I suppose this could be interpreted as the GM refusing to explain the rules, instead expecting players to figure them out 'by experimentation'. 'Going with the flow of exploration', though, sounds much like my proposed approach of slowly easing the players into the game by introducing the rules and setting background over time. Maybe Tallifer can chime in to clarify?

  • 03:46 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Tallifer in post Survivor Appendix N Authors- LEIBER WINS!
h/t @Tallifer This thread is inspired by the prior threads on the iconic monsters, best cannon fodder, and so on. Most importantly, it was suggested in the past thread and accompanied by a truly kick-butt graphic! That's right- we are going to settle the BESTEST AWESOMEST GREATEST (Appendix N) fantasy Author the old-fashioned way. With a pointless survivor thread and bad jokes! IMPORTANT NOTE- DOWNVOTES ARE 2 IN THIS THREAD. REPEAT- DOWNVOTES ARE TWO IN THIS THREAD. Each author starts with 20 points and you vote for one author you like which gets 1 point and an author you dislike which loses 2 points. It is intentional that a negative vote is worth more than a positive vote- first, because we don't want to be here all year. Second, because. Upvotes are in green, downvotes are in in red (unless you are on your phone, and are unable to, in which case please indicate your votes some other way). Copy and paste the previous posters vote and change the numbers. You may vote once per day. This is a...

  • 12:21 PM - EzekielRaiden mentioned Tallifer in post Finally switching my campaign from 4th to 5th Edition.
...ber--I haven't been for years now--and I was able to open the Compendium, Dungeon and Dragon magazines, and Character Builder just fine. The CB actually launched, which surprised me, but suffered a fatal error during the spinny-hourglass loading phase. The Compendium worked flawlessly. Since all the other tools were also listed, I assumed they also worked as they had before. And despite it being hidden, it DOES seem that you can renew a subscription (though you cannot start a brand-new subscription if I'm not mistaken). You can click "manage subscription" on an order page, if you have any orders in your Order History. From that "manage subscription" link, there is a renewal option. Since I'm not currently interested in renewing, I haven't actually tested whether it works beyond the "are you ready to checkout?" page. But you can get a subscription plan into a shopping cart, and it still has stuff for accepting your payment info and such. Of course, all of this may be too late, if Tallifer has already committed to the jump to 5e. Just thought I'd let you know that, if you haven't committed to it yet, or if 5e doesn't seem to be cutting the mustard for whatever reason, the 4e DDI tools SEEM to still work, at least for now.

  • 07:05 AM - Garthanos quoted Tallifer in post What is the Ranger to you?
When I was young, a Ranger was Aragorn. When I came back to D&D in 2009 with 4E, a Ranger became a nature-loving Striker dishing out enormous damage, and that's what I prefer now. And Aragorn became a Warlord with nature skills, martial practices or ritual magic (to cash in an oath marshalling troops and talk to animals and similar tricks not to cast spells like a wizard or druid when he finally hits name level ), also some wicked epic destinies.

  • 08:52 PM - Traycor quoted Tallifer in post Why does no one play Goliath?
As for Goliath in the Bible, although orthodox hermeneutics would deduce that he is a gigantic man, more imaginative interpretations have occurred over the millennia, including the idea that he was descended from the wayward Nephilim, the "sons of God" who were "giants in the earth in those days." Orthodox hermeneutics always interpreted Goliath to be a gibbor, or rephaim giant (i.e. not human). It's only in recent modern times that the traditional interpretation has become unpopular (because it involves the supernatural) so he has been reinterpreted as a tall human. The human interpretation doesn't hold up to scrutiny when analyzing the text.

  • 06:06 PM - bedir than quoted Tallifer in post Natural Weapons; What's Your Take?
Well, a Monk is less effective at d4 than other players with a simple weapon. His effectiveness coems from the Flurry and the scaling damage. I guess. I'm comparing the uses of fists to the use of hooves for example. Why would a centaur monk be less effective with their hooves than a centaur wizard?
  • 01:17 AM - bedir than quoted Tallifer in post Natural Weapons; What's Your Take?
I suppose a monk could use Natural Weapons such as his claws, but the damage and number of attacks would revert to whatever his Class Feature prescribes at that level. For races that have d6 natural weapons you think that their monks would be less effective with those than a rando on the streets?

  • 06:01 PM - LordEntrails quoted Tallifer in post RAW: Can druids wear studded leather?
.... There's just not enough material to sustain a real discussion. At best we could do a deep history dive into how previous editions defined the Druid metal armor restriction, and even that's only informational context for RAI, not RAW. That's why most of the replies are variations of "ask the DM you're playing with" with a side order of anecdotal "in previous games I've played in". There's very little else substantive to say. Yet the thread continues to ramble doesn't it? :) It doesn't matter what they are "supposed". That's the RAI, but the OP is asking for RAW. We should give OPs more respect, and comments like "in my games", "ask your DM" or "it doesn’t matter because you can then do this other thing" don't really help the OP figure out a RAW starting point, which is what he's explicitly asking for. +1 If I want to have a dungeon master go to all the trouble of running a game for me, I tend to talk things over with him and accept his final ruling. If I want to play RAW on...

  • 12:03 AM - Eltab quoted Tallifer in post Survivor Rods & Staves- STAFF OF THE MAGI WINS!
Born a King on Bethlehem's plain Gold I bring to crown Him again King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign -Insert second verse here; the lyrics escape me, alas- Myrrh I bring, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom Sorrowing, crying, bleeding, dying Sealed in the stone-cold tomb. Video to this music is the scene from The Nativity Story where the third magi offers his gift. In that movie, I believe what motivated him to show up was receiving a vision that could have been a scene from The Passion of the Christ.

  • 10:15 PM - cbwjm quoted Tallifer in post Should D&D have a planeswalker class?
I would love for someone to write up a bunch of 4E Paragon Paths and Epic Destinies for 5E. "Once per day when you die... " 102852 That image from complete arcane has to be one of my favourite pieces of artwork for a wizard. Thinking about it now, maybe I will take this and turn it into a portrait for pathfinder:kingmaker for my next wizard character.

  • 10:04 AM - CapnZapp quoted Tallifer in post My (Personal) Early Evaluation of the D&D 5thEd System – Wall of Text
I think you are missing the original poster's complaint about DCs. He is a plau\yer not a DM, and it is the arbitrary nature of 5E such that all the DMs with whom he plays use different DCs for the same situation. Advice about 5/10/15/20 misses the point that he as a player cannot tell his DM to do that. In Pathfinder, there are more detailed lists of situations and DCs, so that the players can decide before attempting anything to difficult or can improve their chances. Okay, that's a fair point. Then I guess the player needs to learn to ask his DM instead of consulting books. The idea that a player could overrule his DM using rules quotes was never a good idea in the first place. But you're right, if that is what one was used to, then the complaint makes sense. (Do note that if WOtC had written what I just wrote, "use DC 15 unless you're sure it's easy or super-hard", the DCs would still be arbitrary (which 5E will never change), but much less varying (which is a thing I can sy...

I do think 5e would have benefitted from more guidance on setting DCs. I had a lot of experience setting DCs coming out of 4e which helped a lot, but there is not much for a new GM to decide what 'easy' or 'hard' means. Referring to monster save DCs in the MM can help, eg low level monster save DCs are in the 11-13 range, which a GM might not realise is an appropriate range for a lot of checks. Likewise a level 20 PC spellcaster's save DCs cap at 19 with +6 Prof +5 attribute. Seeing that it's easier to realise that ability DCs in low level adventures should be around 10-13 if PCs are expected to pass them frequently, likewise high level DCs 17-20.
