  • 03:19 AM - Imaculata quoted HRSegovia in post What was your introduction to D&D
I LOVED Hero quest. This came much later in my life, but I enjoyed buying squared paper from Office Max (which were a comparable size to the squares on the hero quest board) and making my own, larger dungeons, and more complex enemies. My favorite adventure was one where I had my players hunting two demons called Pogo and Wylon. 72441 I also remember playing the boardgame Dark World, although that was never as exciting as Hero Quest was. But that is how I developed my facination with dungeoneering, battling monsters, role playing, and probably also level design. Back then just playing the "role" of a class was considered role playing. It didn't yet involve actually playing the character yet. This sounds like it would have been awesome! It sure was. I wish I still had some of those clay figurines. But unfortunately they broke easily, even though we coated them in varnish. Every dungeon revolved around a unique element. So we had the standard fire dungeon, ice dungeon, etc. But it was a to...

  • 03:49 PM - DMZ2112 quoted HRSegovia in post True Counterspelling
I have to say, I gave this a trial by fire last night and it went over incredibly well. The whole party got into the tense tete-a-tete between the two wizards, and there was a cheer of joy and relief at the table when our candidate won out by the skin of his teeth. I will absolutely be keeping these rules. It seems what you've done is convoluted the same system and what you'll wind-up with is the exact same thing - spellslinging back and forth - but on a longer scale. That was the objective. Without something to draw out the action, spell duels come down to who has higher initiative and can get off a fireball first. D&D doesn't have a lot of nuance when it comes to one-on-one combat. This system as you put it depends a lot on luck and does not test whether or not a wizard can be greater than the sum of his magic. However, on the other hand, not everyone can pass the test as it should be. No matter how many clues and clever devices you put in there, many players cannot see past t...

  • 08:34 PM - adamc quoted HRSegovia in post Wondrous Items
Keka's Anchor Very Rare Wondrous Item Little is known about Keka other than her hermit ways and ancient years for being a human. Some say it was the anchor charm she wore around her neck. Those who wear Keka's Anchor cling-on to life when in the clutches of death. If a player wearing Keka's Anchor fails a third Death Roll, he may sacrifice 2 points in 1 ability or 1 point in 2 abilities (reverse to Ability Increase) to survive another round and make another roll. He may continue to do this until he succeeds in stabilizing, feels his life is no longer worth holding onto, or an Ability reaches 0. These points are lost in oblivion, scraped from the player by the icy hands of death as it clawed for his soul, and may not be recovered by any means. A player may still make use of Ability Increases and place them on these Abilities. It's a cool idea... I'd probably 1) have use destroy the charm, and 2) have a mechanism by which the lost points can be regained, since I don't like mechanisms ...

  • 12:15 PM - ccooke quoted HRSegovia in post Thoughts on bringing back Weapon Speed in 5th ed
I loved this aspect of initiative in 2nd ed and was sad to see it go. It's a simple element of realism (maybe not REAL but it felt like it), that adds just a touch of feeling like you're actually holding the weapon in your hand when rolling the die. What are your thoughts on using something like this in 5th ed? Weapon Speed Weapons with the Light Property = 0 Normal Weapons = -1 Weapons with the Heavy Property = -2 EFFECTS OF SPEED FACTOR - Initiative = Init - Weapon Speed - Max Attacks Per Round (unmodified by feats or features) = Strength Mod - Weapon Speed That may seem a little harsh until you consider by the time you are getting 4 attacks per round, you're level 20. At Level 20, you BETTER have your Strength Ability maxed out for a modifier of +5 (not hard to do). At +5, you can make use of a Longsword (Speed factor -1) and still benefit from all four attacks per round... but a giant Glaive, Great Axe, or Great Sword is going to still slow you (if at least by 1 attack)...

  • 08:57 PM - GX.Sigma quoted HRSegovia in post Proposed Character Sheet
I pondered on this for a while. It was a delicate line to tread. I felt, since it was a simple checkbox, it served as the perfect reminder (seen as how Alert would be sitting WAY OVER in the Feats, Features, and Ability Increase box but has an immediate affect on game content...Having it on the sheet, the player does not have to worry about remembering it, it's there. But if someone takes that feat, they can just change the number in the "initiative" box. It's already "there." I mean, along those lines, why have the Ability Increase Boxes either, right?Yeah, I was going to ask that too. Why do we need to keep track of those? Other things that made sense but could have stayed off were the Disadvantage and Speed Adjust for armor. But those refer to basic rules of the game that most players need to keep track of. "Alert" is, to quote Zak S, one of the "useful-but-not-integral pieces with distinct mechanical meaning." It seems weird, considering this sheet's goals, to refer to a piece of the g...

    - Alert is a feat that gives you +5 to Initiative (Used to be called Improved Initiative) In the version above, you do not see a check box for it. that's been fixed. Doesn't it kind of go against the freeform box idea to refer to a specific piece of game content? I think the benefit of having a box for Initiative (rather than just referring to Dex mod) is so you can keep track of stuff like this. The reference to the feat seems redundant.

Actually, I have a MASSIVE dragon magazine collection. If you can name an article, ad, or Dragonmirth you wish to see again, I can probably find it. No thanks, I've got the entire Dragon and Dungeon collection on a thumb drive.

I'm only seeing half-a-page there, so yeah... it's not viewing correctly on your iPad. I did see however, that someone else was viewing it correctly on an android device and others were able to view it properly as well, so it's likely your device. Hah! No, I can see the whole document. The screen scrolls and stuff! :) Here's the rest of what I can see:

Angstrom RPG

Chill 3rd Edition Envoy Sheets and Adventure
I was exstatic when I heard Chill was getting a 3rd edition, and it did not disappoint. The light/dark tokens do for Chill what cards and chips did for Deadlands!

HRSegovia's Classic Dungeons & Dragons Character Record Sheets Updated to 5th Edition
This incarnation of D&D is a HUGE throwback to simpler days and by far, in my opinion, is the best edition of D&D ever released. It has taken me back to when we role-played for imagination, excitement, and wonder (not for strategy and "winning"). S...
