Summoner Luna Lovegood

The short version of my question: If you want to be a summoner-alienist, would you rather be a sorcerer, wizard, or archivist? What feats would you pick to begin with and what spells?

Long version:

I'm trying to create a Summoner at the core, but I'm basing the flavor on Harry Potter's Luna Lovegood character. I just think she'd be great with an Alienist prestige class.

I've been running down the classes and I think the Archivist would be a good match for Luna. My problem with the archivist is no familiar, so I'll be missing out on the alienist levels stacking for the purpose of a familiar. Besides...having a Hogwart's Owl would be cool....

Should I care about the familiar? Do you think the Sorcerer or Wizard have other bonuses that matter more such as spell choices.

To give Luna an ancestral link to the strange and bizarre, I was thinking about the aberration feats from Lords of Madness, but the Fiendish Codex I seems to have better feats. Or at least I like the mechanic better...the aberration feats' negatives can really add up quick. Any suggestions to extra feats? I was going to make her human so I have that extra feat...The only reason I was going human was to make the rest of her seem strange.

I'm open to anything to make a good summoner. I figure the fluff of Luna can be RP if need be.

We'll be playing in FR Waterdeep. I am tempted to go the Dagon route and have the character's great grand father (or something) have fled to Waterdeep from a fishing village up the coast from Waterdeep....aka Innsmouth

I'm sticking to WotC only solutions (Dragon is fine). I have the Complete Mage and the suggestions in there are good; however if I go the Archivist route, then the spell suggestions do not work.

Since I've seen the Abyssal heritage feats, I've discounted the aberration blood feats, but at one time I was considering Aberration blood (big eyes) and Ocular Spell....I just had this image of big Anime eyes that could pop out on eye stalks to shoot rays....and then return to 'normal'

Complete Psionicist has some Ithillid Heritage feats in the vein of the others, though they provide psi-like abilities and other goodies, not any direct spell-casting benes.

I'd love to do Illithid feats, but the DM doesn't want to do psionics. I might be able to convince him to let me convert them though....

the illithid legacy/greater would be easy to convert....charm person, dispel magic, etc...

I've given up on the archivist since the alienist loses WIS and the archivist's bonus spells are based off it....

I know of a feat from Green Ronin that allows CHA instead of WIS for bonus spells (profound faith - from Book of the Righteous), but I don't know of any from WOTC.

If anyone else knows of some, I'm interested. I like the archivist.

If you are looking to "optimize", then a conjurer fits the bill (wizard conjuration specialist).
In terms of feats, there are quite a few on offer but the basic ones are normally the best - extend spell followed by maximize spell followed by quicken spell.

I prefer the "flavour" of a character to come through the roleplaying anyway as well as their obvious possessions and interests. You can follow the link in my signature if you want to read a story about a slightly different kind of alienist: Lucifus Cray. You will most likely enjoy it.

Start with Wizard (conjurer specialized), then start Archivist, follow up with Mystic Theurge. You are mostly based on INT and have a familiar, and have access to all the appropriate spells, but alas, you will have the slight level lag that all MT's carry. In my opinion, this is overshadowed by the vast and varied amounts of spells that this combo gets.

If you really like the Archivist Dark Knowledge, then alternate actual Archivist levels with the MT levels.
