What does it take to climb those pillars, and then climb across the chains, to be standing over the prone girl on the altar?

Grakk, Vrrsk't, and Kamotz likely are all thinking that same thing, some to get at Slardazial up close, some to save the girl ;)

Morvannon's hurled curse strikes Slardazial directly in the back, but a greenish-purple aura flares as the spell lands, which seems to sap some of the force from it. In any event, it hardly seems to bother the hulking monster at all, and he carries on with the grating chant. The charred flesh from his back begins to regrow almost immediately at an unnatural rate.

[sblock=religion DC 10]Clearly Slardazial is involved in a ritual of some sort.

[sblock=DC 15]The concentrated necromantic power of the ritual seems to be protecting and restoring him somehow. Attacking him directly would be difficult. Perhaps there is some other way to disrupt the ritual.

[sblock=DC 20]If it is strengthening Slardazial, it may also be strengthening the other undead in the room. Looking closely, you can spot traces of the same greenish-purple energy flickering about their bodies.

ooc: The pillars are short, perhaps 2 feet high. They're mainly something to hang the chains onto; more of a bollard than a real pillar. You'd have trouble standing on one. The platform itself is below floor level by two feet or so, leaving the altartop slightly above floor level. You could balance on the chains with a DC 20 acrobatics check... Or you could just leap over the pit to land on the altar with an appropriate athletics check. For example, going from I17 to L14 with a running start, the DC would be 15. Going from L18 to L14 without a running start would be DC 40. See PHB p.182 and 183. It's probably worth pointing out that neither of these options would be particularly safe.

Vrrsk't steps forward challenging the dead, and throwing radiance toward Slardazial.

The shifter runs forward, leaping across the chasm, past Slardazial, and onto the girl on the altar. His free hand grabs the altar, draping himself lightly over the girl in order to keep her from injury. Kamotz quickly unbinds her, and turns his attention to Slardazial.

[sblock=OOC]
Sorry I'd be more descriptive, if I knew the results...

Vrrsk't

move T14

minor Divine challenge rotter 7

standard Sun Strike, on Slardazial, 11 vs Reflex, probably a miss, if hit 5 radiant and slide 1 square to N12-O13.

Kamotz

Double move ->Q17->jump from O17->L14 Athletics check 26 (Total move 10 squares, jump )

minor unbind the girl

If Slardazial's cannot make an OA vs Kamotz, AP Sacred Flame, 18 vs Relfex, for 11 Radiant Damage, and the girl gains 2 temp HP or can make a saving throw.

Round 1

The heroes pour into the chamber, violence on their minds.

Magnus conjures a thick volume of shadowy forms, whispering madness into the ears of those within and tugging their limbs, hampering movement. Two of the undead fall immediately.

Vixo moves to the side and hurls a dagger, but it goes awry in the flickering torchlight.

Grakk charges one of the undead drakes, but it jumps back quickly, avoiding the blow altogether.

Morvannon, recognizing his former foe, blasts him squarely in the back with a flare of power, but just as the eldritch lance makes contact, a nimbus of greenish-purple energy flares around Slardazial, blunting the force. Worse, the blackened patch of flesh where the remainder of the blast hit is quickly restoring itself, knitting dead flesh together with supernatural speed.

[sblock=Heal DC 15]It was hard to tell when you first came in, since most undead appear to be falling apart or damaged in some way, but now that you see the unholy power of the ritual restoring him, it is clear that he was actually badly injured. But those injuries are healing rapidly...[/sblock]

Vrrsk't strides forward, compelling the nearest zombie to fight him or face divine wrath. He directs a bolt of sun-like energy at Slardazial, who ignores the effect completely.

Kamotz heroically runs forward and leaps across the pit, trying to save the girl on the altar. Before he lands, though, Slardazial glances his way. "No,", the dead cleric utters, and an invisible force slams up in Kamotz' way, hurling him aside like a rag doll. He falls into the pit of goo with a viscous glurp. The goo is thick, cold, and slimy, and where it touches flesh, the skin begins die and peel away.

Slardazial ignores the commotion at his back, continuing to chant as his flesh knits itself together.

The zombies charge forward, unable to damage Grakk or Vrrsk't, but slashing Magnus twice with their claws. The animated humanoid corpse with an oversized maw filled with far too many teeth shambles out of the grasping shadows and gestures, at which point nearby zombies redouble their speed, slashing Magnus again and even penetrating Vrrsk't's heavy armor.

The two undead drakes move forward as well. One of them, hampered by shadows, can only stumble out of them in Magnus' direction, but the other bites Grakk on the thigh, clamping down and holding him with sharply curved teeth, preventing him from moving away.

The wight in the back points at Vixo, and the rogue cannot quite avoid a flash of black energy that lances out, hurting him and causing his legs to freeze in place.

In the back corner, the other girl, bound to the wall and gagged, struggles and writhes, trying without success to escape her bonds.

[sblock=Kamotz]Before you fall, you get a good look at the altar. The girl is bound there quite securely, with multiple thick ropes anchored in iron ring bolts at the four corners of the altar. She does not appear to have been harmed in any way... yet. [/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]Magnus moves in and casts enlarged grasping shadows. It kills rotters 1 and 6, and hits Maw and drake 1 for 5 psychic and slowed (tent Magnus). The shadows stick around until end of Magnus' next turn.

Vixo misses.

Morvannon crits on Slardazial, for 19 damage, of which 10 is resisted. He curses rotter 7.

Grakk charges and misses. I assume you mean P21, since it's not legal to charge to O21.

Vrrsk't challenges rotter 7, and misses Slardazial.

Kamotz moves to Q17, then jumps across to L14. When he enters M15, though, Slardazial attacks as an immediate reaction: 15 vs. Fort hits, and Kamotz is pushed 2 squares to M17. He falls in the goo, which makes an attack: 24 vs. Fort hits for 9 necrotic damage, and Kamotz is slowed and takes 5 ongoing necrotic (save ends both). He can climb out of the pit as a move action with a successful climb check, DC 10. He'll take another attack from the pit when he starts his turn there; see the enemy stats block.

Slardazial regens 20. Yes, that's right, he now has more HP than he started with. He started out bloodied, but the ritual is healing him quickly. He is no longer bloodied. He continues the ritual (standard).

Rotter 7 charges Vrrsk't and misses.

Rotters 8 and 3 charge Grakk, both miss.

Rotters 4 and 5 charge Magnus, both hit for 5 damage each; 10 total.

Rotter 2 double moves closer.

Drake 1 double moves out of the shadows.

Maw moves two squares SE, out of the shadows, and uses Speed of the Damned: up to 4 rotters within 10 make basic melee attacks. That's 7, 4, and 5 in this case: Magnus and Vrrsk't each take one hit at 5 damage each. Magnus is bloodied.

drake 2 shifts south and attacks Grakk: 26 vs. AC hits for 11 damage, and Grakk is grabbed.

Wight uses grave bolt on Vixo: 18 vs. Reflex hits for 9 necrotic damage, and Vixo is immobilized (se)

Grakk, surrounded by enemies, tightens his muscles and breaths heavy glups of air. His heart beat increases rapidly and then it happens. Grakk enters into a state primal rage. With a thunderous roar he slices his sword down on the foe currently biting his leg. The blow is so mightly that even though it didn't solidly connect, it still makes the drake scream in pain.
