I considered having Tiljann or some of the townspeople talk them out of it -- but I've been trying to use the "never say no!" rule of DMing...not to say that's a good thing or a bad thing, just trying it out more often. Also I'm starting to feel like having a character talk someone out of something might be me talking, not the character. Torrent would indeed talk them out of it, correctly so. Tiljann? Not so much. 
Plus PCs are probably more inclined to listen to Torrent vs. Tiljann. Meh... ended up with a pretty cool off-beat sidetrek so it worked out in the end.
I'm just curious what they're going to do when they need the Brightstaff later on.
