What is it that makes a great man?

Is a great man a conqueror?

Or is a great man a peace maker?

Or does he combine elements of both when it's appropriate to do so?

Okay, serious answer.

Remember this? "Civilian in peace, soldier in war - I am the Guard!" A great man is a statesman when a statesman is needed, a warrior when a warrior is needed.

And of course this applies just as well to great women.

Meat, potatoes, eggs, butter and cheese. And pizza. Lots of pizza.

As for the real answer, I believe it take winning* and time. Winners write the history books. Over time a good man's flaws will be downplayed and their postive traits will be lauded until those who never really knew him will agree with the historians who declare him to be a great man.

*winning does not necessarily mean war or conquest, but lasting success in whatever endeavor they are involved in that allows them to leave their mark upon history.

A great man is someone who, in the end, has made the world a better place just for him being in it.

A great man, or woman for that matter, is someone who has made a great impact upon the world.

Peacemaker? Conqueror? Good? Bad? Doesn't matter.

In this, we are the victims of the historians. If your name isn't in the history books, any impact you actually had will be ... forgotten. Or perhaps subsumed in someone else's impact.

A great man changes the world. It might be for the worse or for the better. Most often a mixture of both. "Great" and "good" are independent; there have been great good men and great evil men (but again, most great men are a mixture just like most ordinary men). Napoleon was a great man, but I wouldn't call him a good man. Peace makers can be great, but so can conquerors. And the above applies to women also. All IMO, of course.

A great man is perceptive enough to see what must be done, wise enough to discern how to accomplish it, smart enough to realize when he must rely on others, savvy enough to change his tactics when it is required and lucky enough to win the day one way or the other.
