Well, there's always fire and acid and such. :)

But speaking of mazes, one of the most frustrating things I found when watching the movie Labyrinth was wanting to reach in and shake Jennifer Connoly (sp?) while yelling at her: "Climb, you stupid twit, CLIMB!!!" Outdoor mazes aren't nearly as difficult if one doesn't abide by the 'rules'. (Unless they're built to negate the obvious ways to cheat.)

Mazes...Planescape...The prison of Lady of Pain. The image of the unfolding of skein of wool in front of a dark alley in Sigil...the terror of the pcs seeing that...

You're forgetting the clouds of flying piranhas that roam the air above the maze. The pollen from the flowers in the hedgerows keeps them from coming too low, but watch out if you leave the safety of the corridors!
