The venzin swordsman whips the tip of his deadly rapier in the direction of the moving shadow as he puts himself between the bard and the "IT" that just moved.

"What was that?" He asks in a horse whisper. He tries using the corner of his vision to get another look at the moving shadow. He shifts his balance to be more defensive.

As they reach the top of the hill and near the tavern, Maui and Taniwha's reaction to the moving shadow is instant. Leading the way, Maui bounds towards the spot as fast as his powerful feline legs will carry him. Taniwha is only a step behind. Both cats begin sniffing and growling around the spot hoping to catch the scent of whoever or whatever had moved in the shadows.

If they discover the slightest glimpse of a smell they immediately follow it.

If they fail they pad back to the others , growling and tails twitching with annoyance. Before paying any attention to the welcoming light of the tavern, Maui first contemplates the giew of the city from their high vantage point, hoping to see some sort of pattern in the positions of the points of light.

Once that is done he heads over to the tavern door where he sits on his haunches. A growl sends Taniwha to the other side of the door, where he takes up a similar sitting position. When the others open the tavern door and enter, Maui raises a paw and swats each of them before they take a step inside, infusing them with Tane's will to resist any magical illusion that might try to steal their wits inside.

The priest's head cocks in the direction of the movement in the shadows, but he can't seem to figure out what it was. "I'm not sure," he says, in response to Vincenzo's question. However, he points his spear in the general direction. "Better safe than sorry... Maui!"

At that moment, Maui and Taniwha take off at a dead run....

The two running cats cover the 50 yards to the corner of the formless building and turn the corner is short time. From their new vantage point (and out of sight of the rest of the group), they can see a rat about 40 feet away along the side of the building, about to duck around another corner to break contact. However, with the sudden appearance of the two cats, it turns and hisses at them, hunkering down and looking like it's making a fight or flight decision.

However, before either the cats nor the rat can respond, a word is suddenly spoken in the giant tongue, and two huge humanoid figures float around the corner, taking up positions directly behind the rat, albeit airborne. They are large, red, with rather large tusky teeth, rather remarkably large swords and southern style armor. They immediately begin incanting, and Maui's and Taniwha's world turns cold...

From their vantage point, the rest of the group can see about 20 feet worth of ground past the corner whiten from the frost. Everyone can then hear the two giants exchange angry words with each other, but nobody can understand their odd language.

[sblock=Combat]OK, so it's 150 feet from the group to the corner that is breaking line of sight to Maui, Taniwha and the bad guys. From Maui's position, the bad guys are about 40 feet away, the rat in front, and the two giants directly behind, each about 10' up and floating. One is about 12 feet tall and the other 13-14 feet tall, and they have 10' reach. The rat has normal reach.

Maui and Taniwha are both in Cone of Cold spells. One is 30 points save DC 20, the other is 24 points save DC 18. (Save for half.) He can make the saves as part of his action, my rolls were bad enough I can't possibly kill either druid nor pet even on two missed saves.

Remember you can use full run moves if you don't mind losing your DEX to AC, resulting in substantially increased movement.

I'll have map and full combat crunch tomorrow, but you can conduct your first round of actions freeform then I'll build the map to suit where it appears the fighting is going to take place.[/sblock]

A thunderous roar erupts from Maui's powerful feline frame as he and his cheetah companion are caught in two powerful blasts of ice magic. Apparently te cats have found something after all...

OOC: It doesn't look like anyone but jbear is aware of combat.

To clarify, from the perspective of the rest of the group (and in order of events):

(0) [A single word is spoken between the two large enemies. It's really just too quiet/far for the group.]
(1) Spell-chanting begins. This can be heard, albeit with a perception roll but some of you are quite perceptive. EDIT: DC 17 to hear the spellcasting clearly enough to realize it's not just speech.
(2) About 20 feet of frost suddenly extended out from the corner Maui had just turned, whitening the normally dull grey ground. No perception roll necessary.
(3) Voices can be heard in a foreign tongue, probably giant-tongue. Because they are loud/angry, no perception roll is necessary.
(4) One of the two cats let out a rather thunderous roar.

That should be the sensory input Barlo and Vincenzo have to work with. I'm sorry I didn't make separate it to allow for easier decision making.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC] I'm thinking maybe retreating towards you guys ... Maui has a feeling of bad juju with floating giants who can use magic. Even with two successful saves Taniwha got pretty hammered, and if they focus fire on Maui... well he could easily be dropped before you get there.

Maui's owner also suspects the 'rat' is much more than just a rat...

The only draw back of not engaging them would be that they flee and we can't find them. But I could drop faerie fire on them before retreating back around the corner to make them easier to find... thoughts? [/sblock]

"Maui, No!" Vincenzo calls to the jungle warrior in futility as he and King Taniwah spirit off and dissappear arond a corner.

What he sees next causes him to lose most of his caution

Barlo was not exactly sure what happened, but there was a commotion coming from around the corner where Maui and his companion and taken off too. Seeing the frost spray out from a place he could not see caused him pause.

“Whoa, what’s that!? Doesn’t look good. I am not sure I want to rush into that.

With a growl Maui stops Taniwha in his tracks, as he also skids to a halt. The massive striped feline shakes off the icy crystals that cover his coat as he emits another growl, this one lower with a different tone. Taniwha flattens his ears, snarling in response, but obediantly turns and returns the way he came, his long spotted legs swiftly carrying him back around the corner towards Barlo. A third growl issues from Maui's throat, this one focused and charged with spiritual power. A green heatless flame began to form around the pair of floating giants, as Maui also turned to run back the way he came, back around the corner.
