Round 2 Giant Battle

The group springs into action, casting spells and shooting arrows at the giants as they continue their slumber spells. Vincenzo's arrow finds a gap in the armor on of them and makes him wince in pain, but the withdraw of his target, Taniwha, causes him to stop incanting and look at the group of adventurers in disgust. The larger one incants to the end of his spell, but the magic washing over Maui has no effect and the druid beats back the urge to fall into a sudden (and probably, lethal) sleep. The two of them immediately look at each other and start a short argument, but after a quick exchange decide upon a course of action. They unsling their bows and shoot arrows as large as spears at Maui, piercing his feline flesh and causing significant wounding. The cat stands defiantly as the lone rat of the apocalypse begins to charge....

[sblock=Combat Stuff]I'm going to reiterate all actions for clarity.
Maui falls back 20' and casts resinous skin.
Taniwha falls back to Barlo's position and begins guarding. He has a readied action.
Barlo identifies the bad guys and begins Inspire Courage song.
Ethane casts Bless.
Vincenzo shoots his bow at the giants, hitting one for 6 damage (2 more for IC).
The giant's spells fail, one because Taniwha is nowhere near in range and the other due to Maui's powerful will (free successful saving throw per above.)
Both Giants pull out bows and shoot at Maui. Both hit, one for 15 damage and one for 17 damage. An invalid roll narrowly saved Maui from a crit.
The Dire Rat begins the charge of the Rat Brigade. Oh, no.

Feel free to move your own tokens if you wish to, but make sure to update by hitting the return and post the updated version of the map. The terrain is super-simple - all buildings (on the map) are simple, solid blocks. The 'road' you're on is little more than a lack of buildings. (There is minor definition, but nothing significant enough to mark on the battle map.)

Vincenzo: Make sure to declare your target next time. I just randomly chose your arrow to hit the small giant. Not sure if it matters much in the opening round.

Barlo knowledge skills: The giants are Ogre Magi - flying, spellcasting, corporeal spirits with high resistance to magic. They possess a notable healing factor, but it is overcome by fire and acid. The rat is a Dire Rat, and it's most extraordinary ability is the fact its bite causes a nasty disease. Turns out, random drow you meet in the forest don't know the difference between giants and ogre mages, but you do.

You're all up. (Your round 2)[/sblock]

Vicenzo is concerned about his druid friend, so He tries to make himself more of a target. He shoots two arrows at the same target as last time, the smaller of the two.

He looses his two arrows with good accuracy that causes them to hit their mark with rather good effect

Barlo called out, "Those are orge mage's. The will regenerate quickly unless damaged with acid or fire! But they are also resistant to magic!"

"Let's speed us up."
He cast a spell to increase the quickness of himself and the allies around him.

He moved forward into the alley on the left, taking some cover.

[sblock=OOC]Can we NPC Ethane? Maui needs some healing pretty bad or he'll be down before he can do anything. Ethane was meant to be our healer, really wasn't he? Kind of? So before Maui moves out of range it would be good if Ethane hit him with as much healing as possible this round.

Say channel healing for 5d6=21 hps healed to Maui and Taniwha? And then maybe a quickened spell? Not sure if he has anythingmore powerful .... not that I can see from his mini stats anyway.

That would be great in any case!

I'll wait for a response because that will be a big factor in what Maui does :) [/sblock]

"Don't worry Maui, I've got you!" Ethane shouts as he closes the distance to he injured tiger. With a quick incantation and a call for Ruvalra's favor, the warrior priest mends Maui's wounds, places a barrier between Maui and his enemies, and extends a general protection to the entire group.

[sblock=Ethane's status]Any time between fights, you guys can choose who will NPC Ethane if you would like more time considering his actions than I am likely to give. I don't mind, but it's just not something for the spur of the moment. However, Maui, I can have him act before you, rather than at the end of the round as I am used to dealing with NPCs. That's ok. JS did have a prepared spell list, it's buried towards the bottom of his character sheet, but there is no quickened CLW on it, so I went with more healing and fortification on the apparent target of the ogre mage's frustrations. However, I did find a quickened shield and that may help keep Maui up.[/sblock]

So ... the battle was becoming a game of cat and mouse. Well ... not really. But the giants were not coming towards the group. They were holding back and using arrows to deadly effect from the distance. Maui was momentarily bewildered as they pierced his flanks, right through the outer tar coating covering his body. And then he felt Ethane's healing touch. It was enough for the brave and fierce jungle warrior. It was time to turn the hunters into the hunted. He was going to play his own game. With a growl he let Taniwha know what he expected of him before bounding off down one of the side streets, infused with the supernatural speed of Barlo's magic.

Hidden around the corner, Maui's body began to grow to truly massive dimensions. The 'giants' would soon be facing a foe even larger than themselves! Meanwhile Taniwha moved up to Ethane's side, ready to protect the healer... waiting for the rat to get closer, licking his lips with anticipation.

R3 Giant Battle

The dirty, grimy rat begins its attack. Swerving to miss Ethane's spearwork, he runs right into Taniwha's waiting trap. With a mighty bite and a good head shake to make sure, Taniwha brutally snaps the spine of hte rodent and punctures its lungs and midsection. The cheetah then drops his stricken foe.

The giants are less than happy about this turn of events. The smaller one has an outburst, pointing to the guilty party in the murder of the rat. The other one seems a bit indifferent, but when the first glides along the tops of two of the buildings on an archery run, the larger shrugs his shoulders and plays along. However, the small and agile Taniwha proves to be a more difficult target, and neither and land a spear-sized arrow on this more evasive foe.

The smaller giant cries out in rage, but you can't tell what he's saying. Guesses may apply.

[section]
"Here they come!" shouts the Ruvalran priest as the ogre magi swoop in, shooting arrows. Without skipping a beat, the begins chanting a spell, and taps Taniwha on the haunch, causing the cheetah's wounds to fully heal. He whispers a brief praise and points his spear to the closest of them, ready to attack.
[/section]

[sblock=Combat Stuff]Dire Rat moves to I-19, setting off Taniwha's reserve action. Dies.
Ogremagi talk.
Ogremage S moves to F-G 16-17 (and up one square) and shoots bow at Taniwha, missing.
Ogremage B moves to F-G 13-14 and shoots bow at Taniwha, missing.
Ethane casts Cure Serious Wounds for 26 on Taniwha. Still extending Aura of Protection.

I had Ethane go at the beginning of your turn this time to heal Taniwha, but getting lucky on the enemies missing really helped.

Maui: You're now occupying a space of 3 squares, so there's a good chance you'll be squeezing at some point. Fun times. As an aside, I didn't really intend for a 3 space critter to fit back where you are, but I'll let that slide. It's supposed to be an alleyway.

We didn't go into building height. The small buildings are single floor with a height of 15'. The rest are 25'. When dealing with upward reach, you can assume your character is a cube, so the giants are 2 squares tall, and Maui is presently 3. Even with the bad guys having flown up one more square to clear the smaller buildings, that would put them in reach. The tops of the buildings are as flat and featureless as the ground, so you can run around on top of them, if you want.

You're all up. (Your round 3)[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]What would Maui need to do to climb up onto the roof of the building which is now between him and the ogre magi? If he is a 15 ft cube when on all fours, is he big enough to simply climb up onto the roof at a stretch? Or does he need to jump? With Haste I think he has a +12 to acrobatics to jump. Taking 10 I think he can reach a height of DC 24, which is apx 6ft? Enough to reach the ledge and scramble up? How much of his movement would this take? Also what would the situation be for dropping down the other side of the building? Falling rules? Given he can stretch down 15 ft, does that make the fall distance 10 ft? So DC15 to get down and receive no damage? Does the Haste Bonus apply to this check as well? [/sblock]

[sblock=maui]I wonder if the building is made of wood, so you can climb the side like a cat climbing a tree[/sblock]

Vincenzo, still not the object of the small ogre mage's attention aims his next two shots at him, but once again, his hand moves with an unnatural blur that allows him time to make a third shot.

hasted att: 1D20+16 = [17]+16 = 33, 1D20+11 = [1]+11 = 12, 1D20+16 = [3]+16 = 19

The first shot hits solidly, the second is clumsily shot, flying end over end and the third, though well placed, bounces off the armor of the ogre. His aim must have still been a bit off from the last clumsily shot arrow.

Damage: 1D8+4 = [3]+4 = 7

overall, he is quite disappointed with his attack at this time
