5 out of 5 rating for Blades in the Dark

In Blades in the Dark you play a crew of daring scoundrels as they seek to crawl their way up the teeming underbelly of a city that cares nothing for them. From the moment character and crew creation begins you are establishing are connections to the city of Duskvol that bind your crew to the setting and each other. This is a fairly quick process that presents plenty of questions to be explored through play. You will leave character and crew creation with a purpose for your crew, allies and enemies for your crew, personal friends and rivals, and plenty of room to improve your lot in life.

Blades in the Dark is a fiction first game that focuses on the risks your characters will take. Every decision you make will have an impact and associated risk. This is accomplished through a resolution system that frames actions in terms of your position or risk level and effect it will have on the fiction. Play is centered on scores and down time. Scores are the criminal activity your crew undertakes in order to advance and make an impact on the world. Downtime is where we find out more about these individual characters as they prepare for their next score.

I have been playing in an online game of Blades. So far it has been the most immersive, strategic, and dynamic role playing experience I have ever taken part in. The system keeps things grounded in the here and now and really gives you a solid framework for seeing things from your characters' perspectives.

Blades in the Dark is a landmark design. A next-generation storytelling rpg that satisfies players instinctually the way well-engineered board games do. A rare pairing for an rpg book.
