GameHole Con Hints At An "As Yet Unannounced Setting" for D&D This Year

Thomas Valley, GameHoleCon's Adventurer's League coordinator, is currently asking for volunteer DMs for the show in November. As part of the post he refers to "The premiere of an Epic event set in as yet unannounced setting" and "The premiere of adventures set in as yet unannounced setting".

Ravnica was introduced in 2018, and Eberron support was added to the DM's Guild. Other than that, most of the official D&D stuff has all been set in the Forgotten Realms (Curse of Strahd notwithstanding).

This could be a whole new setting; it might just be a region of the Realms.

In related news, WotC's Nathan Stewart tweeted the word "SPELLJAMMER" a week or so back. He has a history of teasing his Twitter followers with hints about settings which - as yet - haven't come to fruition, so take that with as much or as little salt as you wish!

Perkins has been laying a lot of groundwork about Modrons for a couple years: sure he plans to pull that trigger in some way, at some point.

A Planescape AP is almost a certainty this year, at least in my optimistic opinion. Now if it's an actual setting being released, Eberron is still on the table for a hardcover release, but wouldn't be until the artificer is fully finished. A Planescape setting hardcover wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, and would certainly be a welcome one. I would not be surprised if it ends up being Spelljammer, just due to Nathan Stewart's endless trolling about it. I would absolutely love for it to be Dark Sun, but psionics are just nowhere near ready.

I really don't think they'll be showcasing another section of the Realms, unless it's just used as a launching point for Planescape or Spelljammer. However, I would not be surprised if they pulled another Dragon Heist/DotMM. A smaller 1-5 AP set in Lantan, then 6-10+ in the Planes or Wildspace...I think I just talked myself into wanting this.

Unannounced *setting*. Does a region of Toril count as a setting? I think not. Safest bet would be Eberron, but it *was* announced as a setting in 5e - it just doesn't have an official hardcover book yet. So my guess is Dragonlance/Greyhawk/Planescape/Spelljammer.

I don't think it's Dark Sun since people still believe the psionics need work. Ravnika was a welcome change of pace and quite a different setting than Greyhawk or Dragonlance ever could be, so I'd really like to see Planescape or Spelljammer.

Well, to you, perhaps. But the question is what does a “setting” count as to Thomas Valley?

A Campaign Setting was always considered to be a 'world' in D&D, as far as I know. If Valley considers the term to encompass a mere region of a world, then Tomb of Annihilation was a Setting book, since Chult wasn't included in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide.

He said “setting” not “Campaign Setting” with Capital Letters. As in a place where the story is set. He could have meant it in the context of a world-spanning campaign setting like Greyhawk; he could be talking about a single town or dungeon like Waterdeep.

We just don’t know how he uses the term; all we know is how each of us uses the term.

He’s probably enjoying reading us all pouring over his words and trying to guess what he meant though. :)

Well, if it *does* turn out to be the Realms (once more), I will definitely refrain from being excited whenever that man speaks of 'unannounced settings'.

This is how religions start. :D

An AP that starts along the Sword Coast in Tier II, and transitions to Sigil for Tier III/IV, would seem sensical to me. Lantan will be somewhere, eventually, and the island planehoping recently would be a good fit.
