WotC Baldur's Gate III Announced; Powered by D&D 5E

The developers of the Divinity: Original Sin series, Laria Studios, officially announced Baldur’s Gate III.

The developers of the Divinity: Original Sin series, Laria Studios, officially announced Baldur’s Gate III.
The new game will use the D&D 5th Edition rules as the backbone for their system and the storyline will be set directly after the events in the upcoming adventure Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. The game will be released on PC and the new Google Stadia video game streaming service. The announcement came with a teaser trailer below. More information is expected at the video game and electronics conference E3 next week.

The game isn't quite available for pre-order, but you can add it to your wishlist on Steam. The Steam listing also gives some idea of the features and gameplay options, as it lists Single Player, Multi-Player, Online Multiplayer, Local Multiplayer, Co-Op, Online Co-Op, Local Co-Op, Shared/Split Screen, and Cross-Platform Multiplayer.

The announcement follows a tease last week with an image of the stylized "III" which left the title of the game as part of the filename.

Warning: The trailer features some gruesome imagery which may not be suitable for all audiences and is definitely NSFW.

Baldur's Gate wasn't turn based, it is real-time with pause (aka pseudo-turn based). However, concern about attacks missing too often (whiffling) tends not to be so noticeable in RTP, and all the Divinity games, and 5e are turn based, so I very much suspect BG3 will be turn based.

This doesn't seem to be a sequel to the original games, so naming it Baldur's Gate 3 seems a bit confusing.Like, if there's no gameplay or plot continuity, why bill it as the third part?

I’m sure there will be some continuity. The story of Gorion’s ward/Abdel Adrian (protagonist of I & II) may be over, but I’ll eat my hat if we don’t see other characters from the originals (Minsc etc.). And Bhaal, always Bhaal...

A lot of people here seem to be making a lot of assumptions about what will and will not be in the game. The only thing we know for sure is up there in the article. There's "more information" on the various video game news sites, but it's all vague statements that don't actually say anything padding out the articles. We don't know whether this will be turn-based on an action-RPG or something in between (like real-time combat but you can pause to stack commands). We don't know what the story will be beyond "set after Descent into Avernus". It could pick up from Baldur's Gate II, or it might not. We know the rules will be adapted from D&D 5e (the same way Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were adapted from AD&D 2e or Neverwinter Nights was based on D&D 3e). We know you'll be able to control a full party, but we don't know whether they'll have any AI so you can set them to act autonomously if you want or if you'll have to do everything. Hell, we don't even know for sure if it'll be isometric or if the camera can move. It's cool to speculate. Just don't speculate so much that you convince yourself that your guesses (no matter how well-informed) are the truth and talk yourself into or out of buying the game or start arguing with others over your own headcanon for a video game that we pretty much only know the title, developer, and vague genre of. It's less than a week to E3 and I'm sure we'll get more details there.
