D&D 5E How do I fake my character's death?

1. What about Sequester?

- It makes you imperceptible to divinations and puts you in a state of suspended animation for up to 1000 years.

It requires a willing target, though. A specific event (like a kiss from your true love) will break the spell. I'm not sure why your character would specifically go through that. Maybe (off-screen)your character sacrifices themselves to save the party from a powerful villain but he chooses to keep you as a souvenir. (this works better with imprisonment - see below)

2. Imprisonment is the best spell. Maybe you are visiting the lair of an archmage or demi-god and you get imprisoned. Your body disintegrates in front of everyone. They think you are dead (disintegrated). They can't divine you and they don't see the tiny ruby lying among the ashes. A year later, a group of low level adventurers are in the same dungeon looking for scraps (it's not as dangerous now since you guys looted it) and find the gem....

Make up whatever story you want after that. The nice thing about Imprisonment, is you can make ANY condition that releases you from it. So, maybe you are trapped in a gem for a year and a day and then released...like a prison sentence for tresspassing. Or maybe it's when you enter a temple of Pelor or when the person carrying you does a heroic deed. So, maybe the PCs find you on a dead bandit and, in trying to find out how to release you are carrying you around and you, randomly (maybe even during a battle!!!!) appear outside the prison to help save the party!

3. Like Henry said: You get killed for real and choose not to be brought back. Later, a high level cleric communes with your spirit and convinces you that you need to be rezz'd. Maybe to help save your friends, or convince them to do a special quest. Hell, maybe the cleric had good intentions and then you get captured by some bad guy and they find you in chains.

Note: You will probably have to tell your friends that you don't want to play the character anymore. More specifically, tell them you want to play a new character. They'll pretty much accept that and the PCs won't try to raise you. Raise dead etc...always fail if the spirit doesn't want to come back.
