The answer is absolutely no from every mechanical definition.

Firstly, the obvious bit where the spell doesn't say anything about healing. If you have some kind of healing boosting ability, like Blessed Healer from the Life Cleric, it's not going to work. But that's not really the argument here is it?

Digging deeper, the real reason is far more nit-picky and insidious:

You can't perform a Short Rest with Rope Trick. The duration is inconveniently just too short for it. In order to perform a short rest, you must do nothing strenuous for at least one hour. And even one round of strenuous activity breaks and resets the clock on that hour. Guess what Rope Trick requires you do to? Climb 60' of rope, twice. You can't even say pretend it's not strenuous because the most a normal character can climb is 30' a round, while dashing.

So no, it's not a healing spell, it's a long-duration and stationary Invisibility spell, with additional set up and minor benefits. If you want to house-rule it as a being able to enable a short rest (and to be fair, there is an extremely complicated way of making that work RAW) you may do so, but that is indeed a house rule.

Whatever is truly behind this question, the spell is not a healing spell. If it were, then a Life Cleric casting it would additionally heal 4 points of damage to anyone entering.

Though it is not a healing spell, I as a DM don't mind at all if players use it for a short rest, because I am not going to worry over a half minute in a non-combat situation, given how I spend my time in real life.

Oh I know what's truly behind it. Over in the "What can a Wizard do that..." thread, Frog tried to claim the Wizard had no spells that help with healing.

It amazes me how some people respond to something that is, no matter what you say, the DMs prerogative in how to rule the spell and what constitutes strenuous activity during a Short Rest. And, as I pointed out twice, I am not advocating this interpretation at all.

However, if did rule on something and a player took an attitude of "change it or I'm leaving", I would happily escort him to the door.

Yeah, no matter what, that would be the wrong way to deal with a disliked ruling at my table too.

Although, i would not be happy about it as it shows a significant error on my part as a gm if it came to that.

By the time they hit 5th level, the expectations duringrest should be obvious to all.

Do you win an award if you manage to have the most pedantic take of 2018? Because it seriously seems like people are trying to make a last minute push here.

Up to 60 feet of rope. The rope can be 60 feet or less. You could use a three-foot length of rope, and the most strenuous thing anyone would have to do is kneel down to get into it and then step up.

Or, if even a single party member is not currently in need of a short rest, they can go in first and then haul each of the other party members up while they merely hold onto the rope. You can even rig a loop for them to sit in if you think holding a rope is too strenuous for short-rest purposes.

I actually said they had no spells that heal. Seems this poll is in great agreement with me.
