Gren nods and draws his axe, moving towards the heart. He says nothing as the savant begins doing his thing. On tondrek's Signal, he'll swing.

Neurotic

I plan on living forever. Or die trying.
Venakhad resists at first, but when he understands that the orc has something in mind (such as it is) he follows the directions. He pulls out his mace and cocks the arm to bash at the heart. Waiting for the signal he looks at she-devil.
"May The Light guide your way from now on."

ooc: No further Arcana roll is required.

Tondrek gives the signal the moment he feels he has isolated the Heart from the ambient energies. When Gren swings his axe into the crystal it does not shatter like you might have expected. Instead, it crumbles like ash, leaving a pile of fine dust upon the altar. The color fades from all the crystal veins, with the scarlet being replaced with a dull brown. Not unlike, you notice, the color of dried blood.

"Such is the fate of all hearts." Hapherel smiles, "To be broken. Farewell, mortals. Perhaps we shall meet again." And with that, her form dissolves into a cloud of blue mist before disappearing completely.

The crystal tendrils still lie across the room, but they crumble like like the Heart did wherever you touch them. It should prove no difficulty to uncover what they were hiding now.

Gren's eyes narrow when the deed is done. He turns to look at the disappearing figure of Hapherel. With calm, measured motions he works on clearing the floor of any obstructions so that Tondrek can examine what lies below.

OOC: I'm going to be in the woods in a few hours whacking people with sticks. I won't be back at a computer until sometime on Monday. Just assume Gren's being broody about not killing the Demon Lady.

Tondrek claps and jumps a little when his magic works, only belatedly noting the devil's leave. Not bothering to say anything, he immediately sets to work looking at the schema, a waxen head poking out and 'conversing' with the halfork as he does so.

OOC: Investigate the schema.

Tondrek can't be completely sure as to the nature of the schema, which is entirely inscribed into a single large tile on the floor. At least, he can't be sure without days of delightful study in more amenable conditions. But what he is sure of, beyond any doubt, is that this is what you were sent to find.

Tondrek happily sets to work extracting the schema (or making a copy if need-be). When he is done, he looks around for anything else interesting.
OOC: Lets search for stuff! Its not looting, its treasure hunting. ;)

With the crystals as fragile as they are, it takes little effort to push aside the altar. Hapherel promised that you would find treasure underneath, and she wasn't lying. Still, you can't help but feel as though you were misled regarding the amount. In the hidden cache you find a fair amount of gold pieces and three curious stone tiles. These square tiles, about two inches in length and width, each has a rune carved into it. After some inspection, you determine that you would be able to break the tile to release the magic within. Such items would, of course, be one use only.

Venakhad notices something else previously by the crystals. It is a small stone idol with a ruby heart. He senses none of the corruption that was contained within the Heart proper. This small item may have once held power, but now it is just a curio.

[sblock=Translation]Two Potions of Clarity, a Potion of Dragonbreath (lightning), and 1336 gp. The idol, with resale value of 1000 gp, is Venakhad's parcel for level 5.

Also, don't forget about the stuff you got here.[/sblock]

Tondrek carefully wraps up the schema and anything else given to him, then, coming to his feet w/ only a little wobble, looks around and blinks. Realizing his googles are still on and obscuring his vision, he lifts them as asks, Backsie now? With folksy folk and 'forged left behind? Best sneaky again, thinks I.
OOC: Can't think of any other business we have out here.
