Humongous sidebars

In the image attached, I've marked in red the portion of the screen devoted to what makes a messageboard a messageboard, namely the messages. It's quite small.

Is there a way to reduce the size of the sidebars? I don't need half of the screen devoted to kickstarter projects I'm in no way interested in, and it's making difficult to read threads at least for me. It's there any way to reduce the size of the unwanted elements? I realize that sponsors may need a certain portion of screen real state, but must if be so disruptive?

Yeah - on my screen, it's taking up a good 30+ percent of the screen. Looks terrible on tablets.

OMG, it's atrocious! Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off!

Why in the hell do we need all this crap? All it does is make the site more and more miserable to try and navigate through. I don't even want a sidebar, let alone 30% of my screen devoted to it!

Watch your language and your attitude. Not liking something is no reason to be rude. This isn't the first time you've vehemently and rudely expressed your opinions of social networking in the Meta forum and I've (clearly mistakenly) let it pass.
