D&D 5E Disengage Clarification

I don't know about that, when the mount uses the disengage action it only prevents opportunity attacks against it. If the rider doesn't also disengage then I would still swing at him.
From the "Opportunity Attacks" section of the Combat chapter:
"You also don't provoke an opportunity attack ... when someone or something moves you without using your movement, action, or reaction."

When a mount moves you away from an enemy, it uses its own movement (and no action), not yours, even if you are controlling it.

Very true hadn't thought of that.

but the mount does, and you can be attacked when your mount provokes. PHB 198, PBR 77. "In either case, if the mount provokes an opportunity attack while you’re on it, the attacker can target you or the mount."

Mounts get one of the 3 "D" actions each turn: Dodge, Dash, Disengage.

It would be cooler if they got the 5 D's of Dodgeball.

Just to put a bow on this, this is how I read it.
When you are mounted you can tell your mount to Dash, Disengage, or Dodge.
If you want to move away from the target without being attacked. You tell the mount to disengage, and have it move (taking you with it). Done this way you will not be susceptible to an OA because you did not move yourself and the mount can not be targeted by an OA (and thus you can't either).

The mount didn't provoke an opportunity attack. It Disengaged.

If the mount had provoked, the rider could be attacked, but it didn't.

And the rider didn't provoke because of the reason I mentioned earlier.
