Just got an idea earlier, and am liking how it works for my world so far. If you want a random map, maybe for a one off or because you need some inspiration for your world map, you can use Minecraft. I just started a new world, and started mapping it in creative mode, giving me a nice few continents. Best part is, I don't need to use them as the normal size, so an island of 5 blocks that I like the shape of can become a month or two of travel in D&D time. Just thought I would share that with you, to see if it helped at all.

here is a 9x9 map on PC version. It only took a couple of minutes from one end to the other, but I can scale it however I want, and make this the whole coast of a continent, with a wide river to an inland sea in the north west.

EDIT: I meant 3x3, oops. 9 squares total.

and now, here is the same map, enlarge to a 5x5. Now it looks less like a coast with an inland sea, and more like a few large islands in the middle of two seas. easy fodder for a one off, IMO, and even easier to enlarge more. or, I can mix and match areas to make one cohesive continent, depending on how I attach the maps to the wall. I am sure it won't work for everyone, but I am glad I thought of this for my sake, since I am incapable of drawing up a good map.

and lastly, with some wool I have made a house symbol, so now I can just say there is a town in that bay.
