So, what you're saying is you have no actual context for your comments, have no actual idea what's being discussed and still expect your comments to be taken seriously?

Hey now, let’s not gatekeep the debate on gatekeeping! ;)

Regardless, I know that it is my experience when I think I'm being really clever and arguing all awesome-like on the internet and showing 'em all what-for, it usually means I need to take a deep breath and take a short time out. That's advice I try to remember, even if I can't always follow it. :)
I don't just resemble this thought, I plan on taping it to my bathroom mirror and using it to shave. ;)

I don't know what it is about the internet, man, but it's like the whole-

"How did we agree to attack him?"
"All at once"
"And how did we attack him?
"One at a time?"

This is like-

"Self, how am I supposed to use the internet?"
"In a courteous and respectful manner, remembering that I treat others as I wish to be treated."
"And self, how am I using the internet?"
"IMA PROVE THAT THE OTHER PERSON IS A FLAMING LYING HYPOCRITE AND HABITUALLY USES AD FALLACIOUS STRAWMENIEM ARGUMENTS AND WILL NEVER BE RIGHT AND EVERYONE WILL LOVE ME AND SAY THAT I AM THE RIGHTEST PERSON EVAR BECAUSE HE IS SO WRONG AND IF I JUST MAKE 500 MOAR POSTS EXPLAINING THIS ...."

sigh Sometimes I think I need a shock collar, or keyboard maybe?
Or as the classic XCKD strip goes:

Another thing I’m gleaning from this conversation is that some people seem to have no idea how culture is established. It is exactly by deciding what behaviour is acceptable and what is not that the culture is shaped.

In a recent years, for example, the gay community has gone from being utterly unacceptable to the culture to being mostly accepted. A shockingly fast transition, mostly due to the fact that the stories told about gay people were utter lies.

The situation with women is much more nuanced, because while they are certainly part of the culture, their role up until recently (past 40 years) has been heavily prescribed. They are now breaking out of that role and gaining new positions each of which discomforts the culture which has only seen women in subordinate or domestic positions for pretty much all of human history (a few queens notwithstanding).

Women are finally getting their chance to make their mark on the world in ways they want and I, for one, welcome it.

Welcome to the next iteration of the culture, laggards better keep up! ;)

There is no prize for winning arguments on the internet. You know that right? If you want to have a conversation with people, that's probably not the way to proceed.

If you look at the entirety of the posts and opinions of the other person you are .... engaging with .... in this thread, you might understand that you are, at best, misconstruing what is happening.

Regardless, I know that it is my experience when I think I'm being really clever and arguing all awesome-like on the internet and showing 'em all what-for, it usually means I need to take a deep breath and take a short time out. That's advice I try to remember, even if I can't always follow it. :)

I admitted earlier I am not being entirely rational in this thread. But to a degree, my instincts say I not give a :):):):) and focus on destroying him just out of pure spite. Unfortunately, learning to counter trolls in the very same manner Obryn advocates only brought me closer to the primal, predatory side of humanity and left me with some strong tendencies toward being willing to engage and destroy.

So, basically, view the entire engagement between us as a demonstration of what I was saying and my strongest argument against engaging trolls. Because I think I aptly demonstrated a very mild version of the same kind of arguments I was warning against getting into. Which is something I had originally planned to do, just not in this manner.

That is why Obryn is not in the right with the strategy he advocates. Because it does not do anything good to the people who engage in it.

Dude. Just stop.

Mearls's Twitter post and the responses of most in this thread makes me feel proud to be part of this gaming community and thrilled about where we now find ourselves as gamers and more hopeful than ever about inclusive climate of the subculture. The fact that his post or this thread is required at all to rebuke the sexism is unfortunate, but the solidarity and support about the issues at stake is reassuring. Thank you, everyone.

In my opinion, the way we win is through peaceful resistance. And that means standing by our allies and calmly calling out our opponents. Bare knuckle fighting doesn’t make anyone look good.

As people better than I have said: “The arc of humanity is long but it bends towards justice.”

Let’s just do our part to bend that arc in the right direction! :)
