THE HEROES OF DYVERS CHAPTER 7: CLARE'S ERRAND

Aust Thale

Adventurer
Respen:
"Let's make sure that this desert is actually a desert."
Respen proceeds to the entrance as quickly as possible. However, as they are moving down the corridor to the doorway, he asks Vale to discern whether they are still underground or not, and if they are ascending or descending. He doesn't recall ascending. Perhaps the dwarf knows.

When he reaches the doorway, he does not proceed across the threshold. The other doorways always started an invisible clock; he was not going to make this particular mistake when able to avoid it.

Vale:
Intuits the depth underground that they are as he walks along, ascertaining whether ascending or descending or level. They were considerably underground at the start; he knows that as a starting point.
There does not appear to be a specific roll to ascertain this, although it's mentioned in the same paragraph as Stonecunning. Request DM rolls this; if Search is used per description for stonecunning, then modifier is +5.

Vale, you can tell without a doubt, that the hallway is perfectly level, and neither ascends nor descends. You are still the same depth underground as when you started.

Watching everyone just tromping/flying/running down all of these hallways, past and present, ahead of him, Tam mumbles: "What in the Nine Hells am I here for? They surely have no need for a roguish lad like myself. It's a good thing I can kill giants for them otherwise I'm just a tourist here."

GM:
WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT DOING WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS, JUST TO MESS WITH YOU:

As the coin breaks the plain between the hallway and the space beyond, the hallway bursts into flame, as a massive fireball trap envelops the whole party in HELLFIRE!

Caster Level: 1d20+45 = 15 + 45 = 60.
The spell breaks anything below an SR 60.
Damage: (Epic Spell): 125d6 (Avg = 3.5 x 125) =
437 pts. damage (Save vs. Ref DC of 30 for half damage.)

EVERYONE MAKE YOUR REFLEX SAVES!

But in reality...

The coin flies through the air, almost in slow motion, its movement slowed, impeded, as it is forced to pass through the viscous, soggy, muddy, thick barrier of Sylvar's paranoia...

...before landing with an unceremonious, anti-climactic "ppfftt," in the bright, sparkling sand.

As you enter the desert environs, you do not feel the tell-tale spark of magical energy that is normally present when one steps through a gate; suspecting that this environment is artificial, Dewydd pauses a moment to study the environs.

Will Save: (36) = Success!

You were suspicious at how a hot, desert environment could exist so far underground; after correctly assessing that it is NOT a portal, you surmise that the "sun" above is actually a magical construct of some kind. And it is obviously an illusion, because your awareness of its artificial nature somehow makes it hard to believe in the warmth it supposedly generates.

You suspect that had you truly believed it, the heat would not only seem real, but also would become unbearable at some point, perhaps even harmful. And that makes you wonder what else in these environs is cloaked by illusion?

DEWYDD: Do you continue toward the oasis?
