CHART A COURSE IN THE WILDS
Venture into the wilds with this kit for the world's greatest roleplaying game.

This kit equips the Dungeon Master with a screen and other tools that are perfect for running D&D adventures in the wilderness.

The Dungeon Master’s screen features a gorgeous painting of fantasy landscapes on the outside, and useful rules references cover the inside of the screen, with an emphasis on wilderness rules. The kit also includes the following:
  • 5 dry-erase sheets, featuring hex maps, a food-and-water tracker, and rules references (wilderness chases, wilderness journeys, and the actions you can take in combat)
  • 27 cards that make it easy to keep track of conditions, initiative, and environmental effects
  • 1 box to hold the kit's cards

Okay who had or still have the old 1E 4 and 2 DM screens.

Ive seen them but never owned them. I do remember in the 90s coming across a few unopened ones here in there when I went into the odd game shop out of town.

It's not wasted space, it's negative space. It's an important element in visual design.

Like I said its my personal preference. You can call it negative space, I'll call it wasted space. I never had much problem reading the old style portrait with all the tables crammed in them. I will agree that with 3.x I think that was when they went to the highlighted rows without borders which was difficult on the eyes. I could be wrong but IIRC by 3E I had stopped using screens until Kenzer and Co came out with theirs. It was 20-some panels complete with the pizza matrix. That one was really good but admittedly somewhat unwieldy. Surprisingly though once I used it enough I could find stuff quickly.

Perhaps not surprisingly, I strongly prefer screens in landscape orientation to the old portrait ones. :) Research does indicate that humans demonstrate stronger performance on visual scanning tasks requiring horizontal eye movement than they do on tasks requiring vertical eye movement. So that may very well play a role in the move to landscape screens.

Having been taught to read a single page left to right, top to bottom then move to the next page all my life, I just find that orientation hard to use. I guarantee there's probably been studies done that there is a certain age cut off that prefer the printed page over a computer screen and vice versa. I have trouble reading anything more than a few paragraphs at once on a computer screen.

I still have my (very worn) 1E version. I'd like to point out it had a large piece of art on its back.

I think though, I may have used my 2E version longer. The one that came with "Terrible Trouble at Tragidore"

"Terrible Trouble at Tragidore"

I know we played it, dont remember a thing about it. I hadnt played in a few years and pulled out my books after while and found that adventure with some pretty hilarious and colorful commentary scrawled in the margins.

That is the one I still have from my 1E/2E days. Actually, I never used a DM screen for just 1E...

I don't recall getting my 2E screen from TTaT, I think I just bought it separately but it was 30 years ago so I could be wrong. shrug

No way players are sitting close enough to a screen to read the text if it was on their side.

I love the concept of this release, but the execution of perforated cards, etc. means I wouldn’t pay more than about $12 for it—and that’s just comparing the screen to ones already out as I don’t think it adds much to my game. Thinking about a screen for overland travel and another for delving is just such an exciting concept waiting for top notch execution. It might even need interchangeable panels facing the DM...

Possible you bought it used, or opened without the module, but if it was shrink wrapped it definitely came with the original 2E screen.

I recall the screen was shrink wrapped, but don't remember TTaT at all (like, not even what it was or looked like). Googling TTaT, I definitely didn't get my screen with that--I would remember it--so I bought it separately.
