To the OP: I've been running a campaign in Midgard since it came out and love it. I guess the way I would describe it is that Midgard is painted with brighter, boulder colors than anything WotC is putting out. I have played in several FR campaigns run by friends in fifth edition and I find the setting kind of...wan. Generic fantasy setting.
In FR there is tension between kingdom A and kingdom B because one of them isn't doing enough to stop the piracy based in the other. In midgard there is tension between A and B because A is ruled by dragons and intent on taking over the world whereas B is an ancient kingdom of magic whose previously dead rulers have come back to walk the streets as demigods.
