D&D 5E New Year speculation thread!

Could also be Thay, as necromancers are fairly common over there.

(That would be awesome, though. I would love some more info for Larloch, as my current campaign is about digging up Netherese Artifacts and remaking Netheril, so any more info on Netherese magic for 5e would be great.)
Plus Thay played a big part in the Dragon Queen adventures. This would flesh that out a bit more.

There could be "Gem Dragonborn" options, but that's probably not coming.
Honestly, I'm on the opposite end of this - I believe that if we get a dragon-themed book, we will almost certainly see gem dragonborn. Given that the book will (a) almost certainly cover gem dragons, and (b) almost certainly cover dragonborn, it seems almost an inevitability in my eyes. Beyond that, there isn't much in the way of other potential race options I can think of, unless there are variant options for the classic dragonborn (and possibly reprinting kobolds again).

Also, in regards to the Warlock's Crypt/Thay discussion, Larloch and Szass Tam apparently have some sort of alliance, so an adventure would only need a convenient portal to potentially visit both places.

This is off topic, but I felt that it pertained to your setting suggestion.

It's always bothered me that there's a whole creature type for beings that come from the Feywild (Fey), beings that come from the Elemental Planes (Elementals), beings that come from the Upper Planes (Celestials), beings that come from the Lower Planes (Fiends), and beings that come from the Far Realm (Aberrations), but no creature type for beings that come from the Shadowfell. They're all just either Monstrosity (Like Sorrowsworn and Shadow Mastiffs) or Undead (like Shadows and Shadow Assassins).

The same can also be applied to creatures from Limbo (Slaad), who are currently Aberrations in 5e, and applies to a certain extent for Modrons, as they're not really "typical" constructs.

If I were in charge of this aspect, I would probably have the creature type be "shade/shadow" or "figment", as something formed out of the shadow-stuff of the Shadowfell. (As the "Feywild" is the home of the "Fey" creature type, the "Shadowfell" could be home to the "Shadow" creature type.)
Other than thinking shadow creatures should be Fey, and the Shadowfell should be closely tied to the Feywild, I agree completely.

They could revise the draconic sorcerer subclass if they did a dragon-themed monster book.

And reprint the dragonborn subraces from Wildemont, with lore on how they fit into other settings.

Gem dragonborn are probably similar to PHB, but with psionic and thunder resistance/breath weapon options.

On that metempsychosis tweak
I predict a profitable year for Wizards of the Coast, they will public a splatbook and two adventure books, as well as one major release.

I'm keeping it tame.

I have to mention Desert of Desolation as a possible next adventure book. (Apologies if I missed it being mentioned already)

It’s another environment based classic title.
Unless they‘re planning Dark Sun, in which case it might be a bit too much sand.

A lot of people keep mentioning Dark Sun, but evidence suggests Athas is not only not on the slate for 2021, but it’s likely not even one of the 3 settings being worked on.

Look no further than Tasha’s for the tells. It’s filled with references to other settings. The subclasses hold multiple references to different planes. The legendary magic items have origins from Greyhawk and Ravenloft. Azalin the Lich (Ravenloft) and Guildmaster Rhys (Planescape) get art depictions.

Dream of the Blue Vail, a spell made to allow multiversal travel, mentions settings like Greyhawk, Dragonlance, and Eberron.

But how many references does Athas get? Zero. None. Nada. Not a single mention (by name) in any subclass, magic item, spell... nothing. At best, there’s a single art piece that looks like it may be an Athas reference, but even that piece doesn’t mention Dark Sun or Athas by name.

Maybe its the struggle WotC is having with offering satisfying Psionic options. Maybe it’s the inherent difficulty with tackling Athas in the current climate (slavery, among many other things, don’t play well in 2021). Whatever the case, WotC has seemingly scrubbed their products clean of Athas references and don’t seem like they wanna tackle the setting anytime soon.
