According to the Wall Street Journal, WotC's revenue last year was $816 million (a 24% increase on 2019). Brian Goldner, Hasbro's Chief Executive, says WotC is predicted to double revenue from 2019 to 2023.

Hasbro is dividing into three 'units' -- Consumer Products (toys, classic board games); Entertainment (film, TV, licensing); and Wizards & Digital (WotC plus digital licensing).

Hasbro bought WotC in 1999 for about $325M.

I don't think they're selling it, but making it its own branch actually makes it easier to let it go later, compared to having it diluted with the rest of the company.

It presents some major entanglements. For example, it means that if you sell off the game, the media licenses don't necessarily come with it, which makes it unattractive for either buyer or seller.

There is a real echo chamber that goes on when the rumour pops up on Youtube. It seems that every creator chimes in an opinion on the possibility of sale and who that want to do the purchase. Helps make it a bigger story then it really is.

1. Adam creates a speculative rumor video.

2. Bob creates a "reacting" to the rumor video.

3. Adam creates a video complaining about Bob's use of Adam's content.

4. Cindy creates a video about the drama between Adam and Bob.

6. Bob creates a video attacking Cindy for creating unnecessary drama between Adam and Bob.

7. Adam creates a video attacking Bob for attacking Cindy.

8. Darlene creates a video reacting to all the drama.

9. Adam, Bob, and Cindy create videos explaining how they all made up.

10. Eddie creates a video explaining what just happened.

All of the monetize their videos, aka PROFIT!!11!!!!!

And this is how the modern Youtube Economy Works.

Well said. It is like the rumours that go on about Warner Brothers selling off DC Comics. Who want to just put out Superman or Batman comics only, if they do not get the rights to movies, television, lunch boxes, t-shirts, etc... One of the reasons why Marvel was a cheap purchase for Disney is that Marvel does not own the full rights to all their characters. If they had the rights to Spiderman and the X-Men from the price would have been higher.

Probably a good move.

Then again, I tend not to second-guess the business judgment of multibillion dollar global corporations who have managed to turn a tidy profit in the midst of a pandemic-fueled recession.
