Hey I'm going to Hawaii next month for two weeks, this will be my first time there. Since I'm sure we got one poster at least who lives and I'm sure lots of visitors there I want an opinion if you could only do one thing there what would it be.

Hawaii is one state. But several islands. Which one are you going to?

My favorite day in Maui was the road to Hana. Leave SUPER early, get a guided tape for the car and stop at all the sites. You'll see unreal flora, black sand/rock beaches, red sand beaches, and the pools. If you are really hip, you'll find the nude beach too. Bring some SPF 20+ for that!

We honeymooned there. We spent a week on the island of Kauai, which was excellent. Waimea Canyon is a sight to behold. We also spent 3 days on Oahu, which was a disappointing after Kauai. We plan to return to Kauai at some point after the kids are older.

Kauaii. There is a beach on Kauaii that when I went (1978) you had to hike down a path from the roadside to get to, but was unbelievable, with white white sand and black tongues of lava stretching out into the sea like giant fingers. The water was so clear you could see the length of the beach underwater.

There was no one but me and my family around the whole day. It was heaven. I'll never forget it.

I loved just about everything in Hawaii, though. What a great place.

Thats a tough one!! There is so much to see and do. I was stationed there for almost two years back in the early 90's. I didn't get a chance to see much of the other islands besides Oahu. I did spend some time on Kauai, but it was ravaged by a hurricane so it wasn't as pretty as it normally should have been. I also saw Mauna Loa (volcano) from the air.

On Oahu, the best places to go IMO are, Waimea Falls (best in winter time), Pali Falls (not on a map but easy to get to, let me know if you want directions), Kauai has the best beaches, but on Oahu Waimea Bay probably is the best. Definitely NOT Waikiki. The Arizona Memorial is very moving (at least it was for me).
Haunama (sp) Bay for snorkeling.

For shopping I would go to the International Marketplace in Honolulu. You can find just about anything there.

Hope this helps and have fun. I can't wait to go back.

Virtually anything you do in Kauai will be the best time you've ever had. Seriously. My wife and I went there on our honeymoon (as well as two other islands). We went back two years ago- got off the plane in Honolulu, hopped on the puddle-jumper, and spent the entire vacation on Kauai.

Things to do while there:
  • Snorkeling (it's great there)
  • Hike the Napali Coast (strenuous, but beautiful- can't possibly compare it to anything else)
  • Helicopter ride over Mt. Waialeale (sp?), the wettest spot on earth
  • Visit Barking Sands Beach on the western shore
  • Visit Waimea Canyon, the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific"

Guess I should stop now- I sound like a brochure. :p

Nice to see such positive views of Hawaii. I guess living here can dull you to these types of things. It would help if you could tell us what types of things you'd like to do... For instance if you are not a sports person, diving off a waterfall may not be your thing... What types of food do you like and what general activities? Do you want to live like a tourist or like a local?

If Reg is lurking about here, I am sure he could tell you a few things as well...

Yes, please come to Hawaii. Stay in hotel. Spend money here. Revive our tourism-dependant economy since the start of the war and SARS scare.
