D&D 5E Zooming In On Monsters of the Multiverse [UPDATED!]

Earlier, WotC announced Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse, a new D&D compilation of monster material from previous products updated to a new format. These screen grabs are as good as I could get them. They're not terribly clear, but you can make more out than in the original images. The screenshots show the original entry in Volo's Guide to Monsters next to the new entry in...

So, going through and doing a quick count of stat blocks in Table of Contents for both Volo's and Mordenkainen's, it looks like there are 127 stat blocks in the former, and 140 stat blocks in the latter, for a total of 267 (granted it was a quick count, so there might be some repeats listed, but it's going to be in the general vicinity). As they said there would be "over 250 monsters", I'm beginning to think we're just getting everything from Volo's and Mordenkainen's updated. I would very much hope we'll be seeing at least a few more from other sources, but even 267 is a bit high for "over 250" (they might very well go with "over 260" at that point, so it's not inconceivable they might drop a few).

Watching the live stream it seems pretty clear that it will be alphabetizing everything by the name of the creature. So no Demon: Hezrou to keep it in D, it will be under H for Hezrou. In fact, it was the Glabrezu that was used as the example on how you could find it under G in the new format.
That's... pretty awful.
Oh well, I probably wasn't going to buy this anyway.

I hope to see the planetouched PC races, not only genasies and paragenasies but the mechanatrix from Fiend Folio.

My surprised is I wouldn't imagine they were going to use again the name of Modeerkainen in the title.

Any space for the Vodoni empire as an easter egg about the return of Spelljammer?

I think this sort of thing was shot down pretty hard in the Next playtest. I‘m not sure if they are thinking the tastes of the current demographic have changed or if they are just testing the waters to see what people will think.

(Not a fan myself especially as a player, since I expect to theoretically be able to acquire a reasonable approximation of any special abilities an NPC demonstrates.)
what if they made the new abilities into spells?

The more Monsters books, the less useful I find to have them in "book" format. Let's say I need a Fiend of CR 10 for my next adventure, I'm not going to go through all my monsters book to look for it. Digital database is the way to go for this.
I think that's the point here; it's gathering together monsters from at least two, possibly more, sources and presenting them in a single volume, in order to help simplify things...

Plus an opportunity to update them for the new design paradigm (and test out audience responses for the 2024 edition).
