RPG Crowdfunding News – Seas of Kansas, the Undying War, airlock, and more

This week, I review campaigns that end between May 7th and May 29th. In this piece, there is a sampling of some 5e, a Mothership zine, some dungeon options, and more.

5th Edition Adventure- The Undying War.jpg

5th Edition Adventure: The Undying War from Troll Lord Games
  • END DATE: Fri, May 27 2022 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $19 for the PDF of the adventure
  • DISCLAIMER: Troll Lord Games published a piece by me. I am not a contributor to this project
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Troll Lord Games have a 1st to 13th level 5e adventure path waiting for you. Over 300 pages of towns, adventure, maps, and a quest to stop an ultimate evil. It’s neat to see Troll Lords come around to 5e from Castles & Crusaders. If you’re a fan of Troll Lords’ work, check out the campaign page for a free primer.

Seas of Kansas.png

Seas of Kansas from Wisdom Vault
  • END DATE: Sun, May 29 2022 4:57 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $30 + $7 S/H in the US for the PDF and physical copy of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In a world that’s been swept with floods, you’ll build a dry settlement amid a hostile world. This RPG uses the Time Shredders ruleset, one I’m not familiar with, but it is card based. If the idea of a wet world and a card-based system might inspire your gaming table, visit the campaign page for a link to the PDF of the quickstart rules.

airlock- random-rolled resources for wardens & players.jpg

airlock: random-rolled resources for wardens & players from The Tabletop Engineer
  • END DATE: Wed, May 18 2022 11:59 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Mothership RPG
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 + $5 S/H in the US for the PDF and print versions of the zine plus three adventures and four props
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you’re a fan of Mothership or other sci-fi RPGs, this zine awaits you. 32 pages of random tables, a colony generator, ID cards (for props), and more items to make your sci-fi experience more immersive. If you’re a fan of zines, old school random tables (this zine has over half of its pages dedicated to random tables), and want more dark sci-fi, this project may speak to you.

Kingdoms of Hârn- Rethem Hardcover.png

Kingdoms of Hârn: Rethem Hardcover from Columbia Games
  • END DATE: Sat, May 7 2022 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Kingdoms of Hârn
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $49 + $9 S/H in the US for PDF and print versions of the book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Not too long ago I listened to Shannon Appelcline’s history of Hârn in Designers & Dragons. I think Hârn is neat, but the history of the game elevates the product as a whole. Knowing its depths and how it has evolved over time makes for an interesting product. This campaign gives you 132 pages featuring the details of the cities of Golotha and Shostim. If you need a completely realized fantasy world, these books continue to grow the most detailed setting available.

TileForge- software to batch-generate mapping tiles.png

TileForge: software to batch-generate mapping tiles from Battlegrounds Games, LLC
  • END DATE: Fri, May 13 2022 5:00 PM EDT.
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG software
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 for the TileForge license
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Need a program to build dungeon maps? This software is for Macs and PCs, giving you the option to build simple maps before elevating them with textures and other architecture. You can design maps and make them available to others. If you’re a GM in need of mapping software, this may be worth your time.

DungeonMorphs IV- More RPG Map Design Dice & Cards.png

DungeonMorphs IV: More RPG Map Design Dice & Cards from Inkwell Ideas
  • END DATE: Wed, May 25 2022 11:00 PM EDT.
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG accessories
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $75 + S/H for the PDF of the book and three dice set
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This campaign gives you dice with dungeons carved on them which you can roll and connect. If you’re like me and want something larger and easier to see, get their cards to layout and connect. In addition, they have these same images enlarged to full battle maps so you can randomize the location and play through it. If you want to roll and create a dungeon, this is a neat looking set of dice built for that purpose.

Disjunction for the Shadows Over Sol RPG.jpg

Disjunction for the Shadows Over Sol RPG from Tab Creations LLC
  • END DATE: Tue, May 10 2022 8:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Shadows Over Sol
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $5 for the PDF of the adventure
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In a dystopian future, mankind has spread across the solar system. Part dark sci-fi, part cyberpunk this RPG has a fair amount of the support from across its 6 years of publication. This campaign offers a horror sci-fi scenario to roll through. If you’re a fan of indy sci-fi and horrors, check out this campaign; there’s a link in the campaign page to get the free quickstart to try out the system.

Can We Keep It Pets for your DD 5E Game.png

Can We Keep It? Pets for your D&D 5E Game from EN Publishing
  • END DATE: Mon, May 9 2022 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: £7 for the PDF of the book
  • DISCLAIMER: EN World is a subsidiary of EN Publishing
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This one is sparking some interest since most tables want a pet in 5e. This book gives five elemental pets, rules for adopting nearly 50 pets, and companion morale rules, plus an adventure. It just sounds like a fun book, and the price is great. But let me step away from the content and talk about this campaign on Kickstarter versus the last one from EN Publishing that ran on IndieGoGo. Not disparaging either product or campaign, instead I’m comparing them to see the difference the platforms makes. Both campaigns featured compelling products, though this one is a little more fun, both are from the same publisher, and use the same system, but at this time, this Kickstarter campaign is about ten times the size of the IndieGoGo one in terms of funds raised and over four times the size in numbers of backers. That’s telling. I feel both books offered great content and Blessings, Healing, and Peace for Ukraine gave support to the refugees in crisis, but there is a marked difference in audience and it could be argued that is down to the platform. Regardless, Can We Keep It? Pets for your D&D 5E Game is likely to be another great product for your 5e table.

So there's a couple of reasons for that.

First, Kickstarter is bigger (of course), and people are more willing to use it as they're used to it. They have accounts there, they've probably backed things before there.

But more importantly, we've spent about a decade on Kickstarter running 29(!) campaigns now. That's a lot of people getting notified by Kickstarter when we launch a new campaign. When we launch a KS project, 20,000 past backers get notified. When we launched that IndieGoGo campaign, 0 people got notified. If we launch another IGG campaign then 222 people will get notified.

We have a desire to use other platforms for a variety of reasons, but it's taken us a decade to build this following on KS, so it's a slow process and we're kinda starting from scratch again. Thus the much lower showing on IGG. For larger companies who have tens of thousands of people in the KS infrastructure, it would be even more pronounced.

On one other platform we got even lower figures for a campaign. But nobody noticed. :)

All very fair and valid points. I'm glad EN Publishing is spreading the exposure around, it helps the whole market. :)

I downloaded the Seas of Kansas preview rules and it looks like a beautiful mess. But I love card-based RPGs. And I happen to be from Kansas. So they can count me in as one more backer.
