I wish Doomspace still had Athas in it. I know it would have made a lot of people upset, but we could have eventually gotten a cool adventure where you go into the Eye of Doom, return to Old Athas, and prevent the gods from destroying the sun while also struggling with the reality that maybe Athas ought to be destroyed.
I'd pay money for that alternative ending on the DMs Guild...

They are bundled together, though I think you can get the book seperately at least. There is an Adventure for standard D&D...that has mass combat beats. And a board game, that covers those story beats. The Adventure has a quick and dirty mass combat resolution system, similar to past 5E Adventures, bit you can also use your characters in m the board game.
I missed this. Can you point me to this info?

Thri-kreen.

I have a feeling alot of thought went into the extra arms. Here, the solution is, they are "secondary arms", not primary arms. Each secondary arm can only manipulate a Tiny object or light weapon. So, the extra arms can be used in combat. But, there is still only one action and one bonus action. So, it looks like a heavy weapon (two hands) action plus a light weapon (secondary hand) bonus action. There is extra heavy damage-dealing − and I wonder what char-ops will do with it. [edit: Unfortunately the wording of two-weapon Fighting specifies "one-handed", making a two-handed weapon unusable with a bonus weapon attack. But a gish with two weapons, shield, and freehand for spells is looking good.] An earlier UA is similar and this confirms it, but the reference to a Tiny object makes for a flavorful feel. So far, it seems to balance.

The telepathy is "fake", lacking two-way communication. It is a ribbon, but the flavor is effective. The idea is, their mandibles are unable to make human sounds, or any other non thri-kreen sound, so they project their words telepathically instead, then listen while the target speaks back to them outloud.

The carapace of Chameleon Carapace is awesome. Even better than free Mage Armor because it is permanently in effect. Better than chainmail. AC 13 + full Dexterity bonus. Plus a shield if they want. Even scale and plate are possible but then they lose the Dex. Specific over general, it seems, the thri-kreen Monk gets 13 + Dex + Wis. Pretty nice.

Then the chameleon is advantage to Stealth to hide. Excellent.

Plus the ubiquitous Darkvision. Why would anyone not have it! Humans are so stupid!

Finally, Sleepless, a ribbon, slightly useful for guard duty. Like elves they dont sleep, but they do require all 8 hours for rest.

All-in-all, the thri-kreen are a solid race. (But lets see what char-ops can do with their damage dealing potential.) (Thri-kreen Paladin?)

Oh, right. They are a monstrosity creature type. Between the beastly owlbear and the humanoid-ish intelligent thri-kreen, I am less sure what a "monstrosity" actually is. The lizardfolk is humanoid, but the Ssurran who are also lizardfolk are monstrosity, so really dont know what a monstrosity is. But I like that types other than humanoid are playable.

We need to stop thinking that 'pissing off Dark Sun fans' is a threat to future sales. There are very few 'Dark Sun purist fans' in proportion to the player base. Doomspace is a sample of the process of rethinking DS for 5E. It might not be where DS winds up, but it obviously had work put into it and WotC liked the result enough that they didn't want to throw it away. I like the Dawn War component of the Primordials defeating the gods and blocking them from the system. It gives a good backstory to the Elemental priests and the lack of traditional priesthoods on Athas. I do not like the whole gods came back and destroyed the system in a fit of pique. Part of the tragedy of Dark Sun is it isn't an invasion of outsiders or punishment of the gods that destroy Athas; it is mortal hubris and greed.
So Doomspace isn't Athasspace, but it seems like a fun place to adventure for Spelljammer.

The Darkvision flavor feels off. Their culture is either in the astral sea where there is little or no darkness ... or else right next to the sun. I dont see even an opportunity to use it, nevermind evolve it to adapt. Plus they have light cantrips.

They had it when they migrated to the Astral, and, since they are immortal, they aren't going to loose it by natural selection.

It serves the same function as an appendix in humans.
The way I see it, Elven Darkvision is a result of the amount of Positive (5E: Radiant) Energy that is infused within an Elf's body. So not only does it prevent Ghoul Touch from affecting an Elf directly, but it also causes their eyes to operate with Darkvision. The Drow follows the same suit, but years of living below surface in the Underdark caused their Darkvision to evolve into the Superior Darkvision/Light Sensitivity they have today.

Sounds like quite the stretch. Just give everyone darkvision and be done with it. It’s not like light is a relevant angle to fiddle with in 5E.
