Pathfinder 1E When the min-maxer tries to build your character for you.

Once per week aint too bad. I've got 2 groups but (except recently while we've been in lockdown) they never got together more than 1x/ month. Usually less.

Pathfinder 1E When the min-maxer tries to build your character for you.

Agreed, DnD/PF/etc definitely put an emphasis on succeeding in combat. Now obviously this isn't the only way to play them; one can role play in any system. But when compared to a game like Fate, where role play mechanics are put up front, it's a bit of an epiphany to realise that DnD/PF can be...

Pathfinder 1E When the min-maxer tries to build your character for you.

I'm a shocking min-maxer for my own characters. I just can't go past certain options. "A fighter without Power Attack? Getowddahere." And that's fine. I just gotta remember that, even if I'm GMing, it's not my job to do that for others. I mean, I am worried that when they run into my optimised...

Pathfinder 1E When the min-maxer tries to build your character for you.

I have a horrible feeling I am that min-maxer. :.-( In a game GM, one of players recently re-designed their fighter barbarian. (Back when the campaign started half the players were brand new so I'd drawn up most of the PCs. Some levels later people now want to do their own thing.) The player...

D&D 5E On fairies and flying

Towards the end of the Reign of Winter AP there's a bit where the heroes have to traverse a jungle. I changed it up to turn into a guerilla jungle war with a nasty evil spirit hit-and-running them. I hoped it would freak them out. Know what I forgot? They could all fly. Hell, the wizard's feet...

D&D General The Role and Purpose of Evil Gods

Sorry, I was quoting myself from the post to which Chaosmancer responded DFC = Deep Fried Calamari. My new acronym for Cthulu and buddies. I know this was used recently in another thread but:

D&D General The Role and Purpose of Evil Gods

My question is actually about gamer culture, mostly DnD games but I can think of at least one other where DFC (For an acronym I'm gonna go with DFC over GOO) are a thing. Not just a thing, but the thing. The big bad of all the big bads. Why the hell are DFC necessary? What do they do that's...

D&D General The Role and Purpose of Evil Gods

<snip> I guess it depends on how prevalent actual gods et.al. are going to be in the setting. Will the PCs actually meet some? If yes, then you probably need to consider whether they're naughty or nice on a personal level. But you only need to consider which god is more powerful if you're...

Adapting generic TTRPG rulesets (notably Genesys)

This is so true. At least for art you can just use stuff from the internet. (Home game only, obviously.)

Adapting generic TTRPG rulesets (notably Genesys)

In general - yes. I'd save myself time by using a new HERO sourcebook instead of learning a new game. Because it is all generic I can just glance at the numbers and get a very good idea of what's what. That allows me to sit back and enjoy the world building, my own or reading someone else's.

Adapting generic TTRPG rulesets (notably Genesys)

I'm a big fan of HERO system. I'll say up front I've invested a lot of time in learning the rules set, this makes it easy for me to jump in and start fiddling with it. It does have a steep learning curve for new GMs. For players it's not so bad - if the GM (or campaign setting) is able to walk...

    D&D 5E Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

I like a good trope. Sometimes I even like a bad trope. It depends on how it's done in the moment. Although I do struggle to think of an example of the "broody loner orphan edge-lord" that I haven't wanted to slap the player for. But in theory I could enjoy this. Maybe... the orphan edge-lord's...

D&D General DM's: How transparent are you with game mechanics "in world?"

I've had a player who could be like that. I got into the habit of responding to him saying things like "How did NPC just do X?" with "Because they can." If he pushed for more info at the table I'd say "I don't have to explain it." Away from the table I'd take just enough time to explain the...

D&D General Critical Role: Overrated, Underrated, or Goldilocks?

To answer the OP. I like CR. It falls into the same category as other podcasts for me, in that it's rare that'll just sit down and watch it but it's something I'll have on while I'm doing something else, like work. I rate it as "Very Good Improv" which puts it below "Average Scripted Drama" but...

    Generic Miniature Painting Thread

Thanks! They turned out better than I expected. I realise, after looking at these pics, that the phone on my camera is garbage.

    Generic Miniature Painting Thread

I've had a slow year for painting, but we went into lock down 2 weeks back so I dived in and got some work done. Here's a group shot and some close ups

What do you eat for a typical breakfast?

I ate a poptart once. That was enough. Effin disgustin. But then most American sweets are. I blame the ubiquitous corn syrup that seems to be in everything. Including the bread. Why is it in bread? When I was over there I had to go to fancy grocers to find decent bread. (Admittedly this was 20...

I have that same mini. Yours is soooo much better. Love her "shifty" eyes.

D&D General All Dead Generations: "Classic Vs. The Aesthetic"

Maybe? I'm not in a position to evaluate the ethical weight of various arguments for veganism/vegetarianism. (My training in ethics is waaaayyyyy too long ago and was pretty basic. Couldn't put together a decent argument if my life depended on it.) How's about we settle on "They are both ethics...
