D&D 5E Houseruled: Feats, Rolled Stats, MCing Pick One

I don’t recall Dex 19 getting you anything Dex 18 didn’t, unless you were a thief.

D&D 5E What are your (up to) three favorite character classes?

I'm the normie: fighter, rogue, wizard.

    D&D 5E What is the perfect Fighter/Barbarian multi-class balance?

Unless encounters per day are too few, I'm probably not multiclassing. That said, I did play in a campaign where encounters per day were too few and I ended up barb 12/fighter 4.

D&D 1E Inquiry: How do fans of AD&D (aka 1E) feel about the Unearthed Arcana supplement?

I never used it, but that was really a matter of timing. It was published the summer after I graduated high school, and then I fell in with a more OG group in college that wouldn't have touched it with a henchman's ten-foot pole.

D&D 5E Ray Winninger, in charge of D&D, states his old school bonefides.

I’m usually in the “woke gone too far” camp around here, but I honestly can’t even imagine what it would be like to care. On all sides and in all subgroups, it’s amazing to me how whiny, entitled and delicate so many are in the online ttrpg community. Buy what you* want and play what you want...

D&D 5E Where We've Been and Where We Might Be Going (or, What I Think WotC Is Doing)

Nah, it's an algo that weights total sales by recent sales.

D&D 5E Where We've Been and Where We Might Be Going (or, What I Think WotC Is Doing)

Based on information we do have access to, that seems extraordinarily unlikely. For example, Wildemount is the 15th-ranked D&D title on Amazon. That's not a straight sales-volume ranking, but it's a fair bet Wildemount hasn't "rivaled" Xanathar's or Tasha's, let alone the core rulebooks. I like...

    5.5E Blast from the past

Another vote for scarier undead. Rework the exhaustion system and use it for enervation. Like @Sacrosanct I don't think level drain is worth the bookkeeping, but enervation should suck bad enough that you really want to avoid it.

D&D General DMs: where's your metagaming line?

My line is when a player metagames another player.

D&D General D&D's Evolution: Rulings, Rules, and "System Matters"

Others have pointed to the difference between FK deeply rooted in experience and FRPGs deeply rooted in, er, fantasy. I don’t think it’s an accident that when Arneson makes the move to a fantasy setting, you end up with stuff like this in your “try anything, stop looking at your character...

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

Hiding, Perception, grappling/shoving, escaping are the main ones. Concentration is a save. It's not a harsh death spiral, but it still counts.

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

I totally get that. And I'm certainly not arguing that death spirals are bad design. Actually, the bit of design I'm most proud of is the damage mechanic in Blue Planet, and it has a hard death spiral. For me, if I wanted verisimilitude out of D&D, I'd have to do more than add a soft death...

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

Huh, I didn't intend it that way, but sorry about that. You enter the death spiral with the first level of exhaustion, unless you never make ability checks in combat. Worse, it carries over from one battle to the next, unless you get a high-level healing spell or a long rest. Worse still, it's...

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

Wow. I honestly don't get the hostility. Incidentally, I wasn't talking about the house rules "invalidating" in-combat healing -- I was suggesting they incentivize or even require it. In the current system, you don't need a dedicated healer who does little else in combat other than heal to...

    D&D 5E Good low-level dungeons?

Take six minutes and include multiple entrances and some decisions to make. Better dungeon, better lesson. :)

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

By eliminating those features with house rules? Maybe "dismiss" was the wrong word. Sacrifice?

    D&D 5E Death Saves & Pop-Up Healing

It's got problems, but I personally think a lot (read: all) of the fixes here dismiss some of its good features. At least for me, not requiring dedicated combat healers (or CLW wands) is a feature. Not having to worry about hit points until you run out of them is a feature. Not having to worry...
